OH, THE IRONY! I'm sorry you are having a shitty time at your host's house. But I can't help but think of your own room back hom...hmmmm, is this a bit of kettle calling the pot dirty?
Well, it's just not true!
"Kiedy" means "what day" and also "what time". I think she just didn't hear / remember what you said.
And - of course - she could accept you credit card.
There's stright rule in that kind of "burocratic" foolishness - don't talk to the bitch, talk to her boss.
Don't wait, don't let her win - ask for the superior. Nowadays there's large unemployment in Poland, so it's very easy to loose job, if you're vicious bitch for consumers.
Word "boss" it's understable for Polish, so you may always use it. You see the differance, if you ask to see "boss".
Don't let them tread you like that, girl!
Dear hungry Judy!
Forget about so-called "chinese food" in Poland. All the so called "chinese restaurants" are menaged by Vietnamese. They all used the same recipes and ingredients, becouse they are belong to the same firm. This system exists for earning money by the Vietmese, not for our pleasure. They serve shit (as we say"they use rats as chickens", in reality there was at least one accident, when the Police arrest menager of "chinese-food" restaurant, becouse he served pigeon (catched on the street) as "duck in sour-sweet souce :-)
So it' s got nothing to do with chinese food!
If lookin' for something "asian" to eat, you can try to find some japanese bar, that serves sushi etc.
BUT it's terribly expensive (about 50 zł for the smallest sushi meal).
As you see it's just impossible to find in Poland good chinese restaurant (unless it's very expensive in big hotel etc.).
It seems that you have to get used to polish/ east european food (check out hungarian "lecho", real lithuanian "bigos", maybe some fish (for example fry trout ("pstrąg"), or kutia (as dessert). You can also try (if you go on a trip to country, of course) some meals prepared on the bonfire. Or (if you got lot of money) you may eat venison in some fancy restaurant.
To tell you the truth, there's no polish food. All we eat, we borrow from our neighbours.
But we've got a whole lotta native drinks, instead ;-) For example - realy, realy traditional and polish "to the core" miód pitny (honey to drink).
Bon Appetite (and beware of rats!)
Dinner Hey, I really like reading your entries... they remind me of my time learning Spanish in Barcelona!
So, anyway after reading your food worries here is a killer website for restaurants in Krakow:

They have everything you said you wanted.... :)
good luck
Auschwitz My experience was very similar to yours. I was not as shocked as I should have been, because I had read so much and seen movies and programs about it. Still I got a very creepy feeling downstairs where the cellars are.
Oh I should have stayed longer to learn more Polish. Now I envy you - and miss you of course a great deal!
Take care.
Vala
Dobranoc!
Well, just try to read it again - in few months time ;-)
EVERYONE had to lose sometime when it was down to 2 (me and another girl), Marek had us r-p-s each other. That was when I lost. ************
And Mr. Brzczyszczykiewicz -- that is one long last name! I have not yet mastered the art of properly dissecting long words. I don't think Poland is bad at all, I like it here. I wish I could stay longer (despite my seemingly constant complaining).
I think any english spoken foreginer, who tries to learn polish (quite complicated language) deserves respect. I've just started to learn "khmer" language ("khmerish" "cambodian" ? ;-), so I know what you feel.
Good luck!
No mockery Sorry if the previous comment wasn't flattering. I'm sure many of us would have done the same thing. No use pouting about it. Keep your head up and nose above water! The pictures of the food looks tasty, yep even the Chinese dim sum.
just reading it is exausting You are out of Helsiniki now, too bad. I read this article in Food and Wine magazine about how Helsiniki is going through this boom in design and archiecture.
Best wishes I'm sure, you will.

Take a closer look at Poland, it's not so bad as it seems ;-)
Anyway, I wish you all the best!
