As a child, my only recollection of Bisbee is a faint group of lights nestled in a little valley along the side of the road, on the way to Douglas, where my grandparents lived. It wasn't until February of 2006 did I make the time to visit Bisbee. During WW 1 my grandfather was stationed in Douglas Arizona at Camp Harry Jones. After the war, he moved to Bisbee and worked at the Copper Queen Hospital as an MD for the Phelps Dodge mining operation that was in full swing. In 1920 my mother was born at the CQ hospital. Had a tooth fall apart leaving a huge gap. the dentist checks me out, cleans out the area, and fits me for a crown, and presents me with a bill for one thousand dollars. this baby boomer has no dental insurance. ouch. they fit me with a temp crown, I pay the bill, and exit. somehow, I feel I have been taken. A few days later, I return to get the crown put on. But I tell them about the pain in my tooth. He tells me I need a root canal. thanks. why didn't to tell me that before the [View Full Entry]

Circa 1967. I turned 17 in Vancouver. Melting pot of travelers from all over the world. I had hitchhiked up there from California... via Seattle. Everyone was known by the name of the state or area they came from. Hence, I was known as California. One guy totally reeked of suspicion as a nark, so we just called him Nark. He wore a lettermen's jacket! Stayed at Crowbait's place on English Bay. Sometimes we just slept on the beach during the day, and sat in a cafe all night. There was one on Granville St that I remember really well. Bonnie's [View Full Entry]

The village of Sete is where the Canal du Midi meets the Mediterranean. Stayed at the local HIAYH. Of all my hostel experiences, all were very good, even in Sete, although there was one thing that was a bit wangey. The only 'strange' person I roomed with was here in Sete. First of all, his feet stank. Bad. Horrid. Since that date, I have questioned why I didn't say anything, like, hey, why don't you do a number on your feet. Well, it's always easier to think of what you would do afterwards. At any rate, I suspected him of being [View Full Entry]

...treat your feet to a good soaking. Featured here is my world class award winning bunion. Another good reason to travel while you can- you never know what will hit you when you're in your 50's. I know you're dying to know how I got it. It was a few years ago, sitting peacefully up at my foothill property reading a book. I was sitting in one of those folding chairs that are not easy to get out of, you know, the kind with the drink holders on each side. In my periferal vision I saw enough of a movement that [View Full Entry]

We spent a night and a day in Salzburg on our way to Vienna from Interlaken. Arriving at the train station, I called and made a reservation at local zimmer that was in Rick Steve's book. The woman on the phone gave me directions, telling me which bus line to take, which stop to get off at, etc. Don't ask me how this happened, but we headed in the exact OPPOSITE direction, finding ourselves totally lost... like geese in a hail storm. After another phone call we finally got back on the track, found the zimmer and checked in, and took [View Full Entry]

Dearest New York, It's been too long since I have seen you. True, saw you from a distance a few times while was flying elsewhere, but time and circumstances wouldn't allow even a small detour. I hope you understand. It certainly isn't because I don't love you, and miss you terribly. It's this stupid ticketing. Yes, I admit to some indescrepencies; it's true I've had a few flings. Paris, Rome, Lyon, Venice, yes, they're lovely, but mind you, you're more beautiful than them all. And Palermo, yes. I admit to my lust, I am sorry. I am only human. Please forgive [View Full Entry]

It was on a business trip to Louisville- a few of us ditched the proceedings to do some sightseeing. Rented a car, and started out through the ‘bluegrass’. Went to a civil war site where they were having some re-enactment, that was interesting, especially all the little food booths that were there. Then someone mentioned the ‘snake handling churches’, why don’t we try to find one? So we started asking around, and were told there were none in the area, but we would have to go to Eastern Kentucky. So away we went. After a few more inquiries, we found ourselves [View Full Entry]

The Mozzerilla Con  Europe » Italy
Killer Mozzerilla - go ahead- fall victim. It's a con, pure and simple. It works like this: you see this delectible shop, with cheese, salami, and other colorful things hanging all over. It's simply overflowing with goods. Brightly painted where there is an inch of the woodwork that isn't draped with some sort of goods. So you are lured in. The counter has olives on it, and cheeses and salamis and other meats in it. You see the mozzerilla cheese submerged in water. The proprieter takes one out, fills a bag with water and places the mozzerilla in the bag. You [View Full Entry]
