So here we are guys, the last section of our long journey before settling down in Auckland... We left Napier, heading to Rotorua which is meant to be the Maori culture hub of New Zealand. The journey was mainly hills and sheep (sound familiar?) apart from a couple of waterfalls. The first was a quick stop off, just outside of Napier and was beatiful but nothing as spectacular as the one to come! We stopped at Huka Falls just outside of Taupo. This waterfall is immense!! It is semi man-made in that from the Waikato River which is normally 100m wide, it is squeezed through a 20 metre wide gorge and over a 20m drop. Every second up to 250,000 cubic metres of water gushes through the gorge and shoots out over 8 metres beyond (www.hukafalls.com). ... read more

We arrived back in Christchurch on a sweltering hot day and checked out our new hostel Foley Towers. It was fairly central, and next to the river Avon which runs through Christchurch. Our room had an ensuite which when you’ve been away this long is really nice to have! Not that Jon minds walking round in his kegs, or even naked. Fi has had to tell him to put his clothes on several times!! After a wander round and a Starbucks (of course!!) we checked out the old university area, where there was a craft market and several bars and cafes. We ended up in a bar (shocking I know) called Dux de Luxe where we were meeting Matt again. He likened it to the Glen in Aber but it was much nicer!! Think it was ... read more

Before leaving Australia, while we were waiting to board our plane, imagine our excitement when we saw the Airbus A380!! Ha ha ok, we were not excited exactly but it was pretty cool as it's been on the news everywhere! It's huge! Shame we had to get on a very tired looking JetStar Boeing for our short hop across to New Zealand - which by the way was delayed...and they didn't even give us a free drink! Gutted. Anyway....we arrived into Christchurch International airport and ready to start the final phase of our travelling bit! The first thing we cottoned onto was how cold we suddenly were! We had just come from 25-32 degrees temps and here it was about 13!! But we didn't care, even though it was a slight shock to the system! Even ... read more

We arrived in Sydney last Thursday afternoon, and quickly hailed a taxi, which ended up costing $10 to go a couple of blocks...we think we may have been scammed here. We then got to our hotel, the Y on the Park (YWCA) which apparently had a kitchen. However, what they call a kitchen is different to what we would call one..they had units but no cooking facilities apart from a microwave. We soon realised that this was going to turn out to be expensive (we plan to complain as we wouldn't have stayed here if we had known!). While eating out sounds like fun, it soon becomes expensive when it's all day. Luckily the hotel had breakfast included, so we could have some toast and a cuppa in the mornings. Jon has about 6 slices so ... read more

Firstly, sorry it's been so long! We've been real busy and when we have found our way onto a computer there has been no USB so we couldn't put our photos up. As you can see there are over 50 photos! Sorry about that! Anyway, back to Noosa...panic over..Jon found his towels, the cleaners for some reason had taken them incase they belonged to someone. Silly logic, leaving them where the owner left them seems to make more sense! Our final night in Noosa proved to be the best. We sat watching TV with our house mates when it started to rain...then suddenly (dramatic music)...there were huge flashes of light and bangs...but fear not, it was only a storm! But an awesome one at that! We stood outside watching it for at least an hour (in ... read more

So we left Townsville on the ferry to Magnetic Island (having almost got on the wrong one - oops) which is only a 20 minute ride away. The island looked beautiful and we could see our hostel just up the beach from the port. Unfortunately the bus took a magical mystery tour which took half an hour to go 2 mins up the road! But anyway we got there safe and sound, the hostel looked nice and before we checked in we ran into James and Lisa on the beach. We had been planning to meet up as it was Lisa's birthday so it was good to see them. Although they scared us with tales of dirty, noisy rooms..but as it turned out it was just theirs! As we checked in, for the first time something ... read more

This week we started our trip down the East Coast. This started in Cairns after spending half the day at Brisbane airport. It was here we heard a plane had almost been struck by lightening..not what you want to hear just before getting on one! Added to that it was raining, although it's not quite what we Welsh would call rain, bit like spitting really! Anyway, we arrived in Cairns slightly moody after our plane was delayed for an hour, during which time we were sitting on the plane with no refreshments! Fi was going mad and getting slightly stroppy about the lack of peanuts being handed out much to Jon's amusement! But they gave us a 'free' alcoholic drink to say sorry - we thought they were free anyway! We arrived at our new hostel ... read more

Beautiful sunny Brisbane

We arrived in Australia after a short but sweet flight (Jon still smiles every time they offer him free drinks on the plane!), and we were very happy to land here. Fi had had reservations about Brisbane as she couldn't really remember it from the last time, which she figured meant it wasn't very good!! But we were very pleasantly surprised. As we came into the city from the airport, we could see exactly what we were looking for...lots of buildings, lots of restaurants and bars, and lots of people! Brilliant. The airport shuttle unfortunately was a little long winded and we are not sure the guy knew exactly where he was going, and seemed to do things in an odd order, including picking up people before dropping off the ones he already had! We decided ... read more

Whilst staying at Smuggler's Cove, we were initiated into what they call the Kavaholics. This basically meant that we tried Kava which is a local Fijian speciality made from some sort of root. There was a ceremony of sorts, and as we were 'kava virgins' everyone in the restaurant had to look. Then there was a clapping thing, clap once before then 3 times after drinking it. It tasted a bit like muddy water so we didn't feel the need to go for a second! It is supposedly slightly narcotic, but affects people in different ways. Fi had no effects whatsoever and Jon's toungue went slightly numb so it was nothing too bad! In fact, it shut him up for a bit which was nice. :) A day or so later, we left the relative safety ... read more

Bula everyone! After a 26+ hour flight we have finally arrived here in Fiji. The flight itself was pretty good if you think trying to sleep in an area the size of a pea is good. But the movies and food were good so can't complain! Staff were friendly, but "strictly prohibited" the use of toliets by more than one person...what they were talking about we have no idea!! Needless to say, we stayed strapped in our seats! LA was a bit of a nightmare, 2 hours just to get through immigration, by which time the sniffer dog ("canine" in the US) had found Jon's plums...I mean the ones in the bag he was carrying for Fi :) We then got a telling off for throwing them in the bin..oops. Anyway, we arrived in Nadi, greeted ... read more
