There's no war in sight... although there are reminders. Well we got up at the crack of dawn the other morning in Duborvnik to get to the bus station for our 800 bus away from the coast into Bosnia. Nothing was open and we were starved. I had a bag of paprika potato chips and a twix bar, and jeff had espresso from a machine and a bag of pretzels for breakfast. then off on the bus, which was pretty empty, further up the beautiful coastline. bosnia has a short coastline so we had a couple of border checks along the [View Full Entry]

just had to update again today so we're back at the internet cafe looking up some stuff for slovenia (skiing, hotels, transportation, etc) and we're in an internet cafe FULL of local boys (men) screaming and shouting and all playing doom or some equally inane computer game and acting like a bunch of children! from the noise in here you wouldn't know but it was a rockin night club or a sports arena.... anyways, after the last entry, i managed to hike up another hill on the east side of town and got treated to the best views yet! too bad [View Full Entry]

Gettin expensive... Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik
Well we have made it a little further up the Adriatic coast to Dubrovnik, Croatia "the pearl of the Adriatic" or something... What a spot! Stari Grad (old town) is a totally walled in town of narrow alleys, high staircases and old buildings... well somewhat old. the towns been around a long time, but back in the war in the 90's a lot of it was damaged or destroyed. but its been fully restored and is a tourist magnet again. even this time of year there are a few people around. i can't image how hot, crowded and generally annoying it [View Full Entry]

Montenegro Europe » Montenegro » Kotor » Kotor
Greetings from Montenegro! Well its been a couple of days. I'll try to pick up where i left off.... we enjoyed one last night in serbia. stayed up pretty late chatting with the guys who run the hostel, talking about random stuff. One guy was telling us all about the NATO bombings in Belgrade in 1999. He was living in the city, and they had built all kinds of shelters underground in case bombing started. And so it did. apparantly a lot of the bridges in the country were destroyed and they figured those in belgrade were next. i think most [View Full Entry]

Novi Sad, Serbia Europe » Serbia » North » Novi Sad
Woke up way too early this mornign to the alarm going off at 720. But no rest for the weary, had to get up and shower and head to the bus station for our 915 bus to Novi Sad. Got there on time, after bananas and a croissant for breakfast, and easily (almost too easily...) got on the right bus in teh right seats after no trouble! makes me wonder how we're going to pay for that later... Then, we arrived 15 mins earlier than we thougth we would! how wonderful! Then we easily found Jelena, my friend from Africa, and [View Full Entry]

Low-key day in Belgrade Europe » Serbia » West » Belgrade
Well the blinds in our room must be effective because we had a wonderful sleep in without even realizing it. Once finally up, we headed out for a relaxing and housekeeping day. First off to the bus station to book our tickets to Novi Sad for tomorrow. Thats a medium sized city a coupe of hours from Belgrade. Jelena, who I met in Africa, lives there and we're going for a visit for the day. Well who knew there were two bus stations right next to each other. Not quite sure what the difference is, but after asking two ladies in [View Full Entry]

Yugoslavia... or so it was Europe » Serbia » West » Belgrade
Well after an interesting train ride here we are in Serbia, part of teh former Yugoslavia. Got to the train station in Budapest last night with no troubles, too early if anything. Finally our train came to board, and we had no idea where we were going. there were 4 cars, two with beds and two with seats, one each of first and second class. so we knew we didnt'have a bed but didnt'know which class. so we asked two employees who were less than helpful so we just got in first and hoped for the best. and it worked out [View Full Entry]

whew what a tiring day. was up at the crack of dawn again today (perhaps going to bed before 8 again had something to do with it)... jeff made it to 10pm at least. Anyways, off to the train station first thing to see about heading to Eger for the day. After some minor confusion relating to everything being posted in Hungarian only, we bought our return tickets and headed up to the platform. Then we realize that the train we think we're going to get at 830 is actually a fast train which needs a reservation. So we go to [View Full Entry]

Budapest Europe » Hungary » Central Hungary » Budapest
Well we got a good start to our trip today in Budapest! our hostel is right downtown so its not too far to go anywhere. It is on the 3rd floor (which means 4th floor to north americans) so the hike up the stairs isnt' so fun. Got up pretty early since some of us (ok me) went to bed last night at 700. Anyways we were ready and gone around 8. We walked over the chain bridge to the Buda side of the city. Who knew one side was Buda, and the other side of the Danube river is Pest [View Full Entry]
