| 17th November 2009 Nan | Glad to have you bak! - From: Istanbul I thought you had given up on the blog and left us all stranded but this is VERY interesting. Hilarious that the 'Simpsons' were on in Turkish. With MY hearing, of course, I mightn't know the difference (ha ha). Lots of interesting stuff in your description of life in Istanbul -- you paint a vivid picture. Not a place Westerns would want to settle in though. Take care, see you soon |
| 14th November 2009 Nan | Directed to . . .? - From: Ephesus Pity you're not thinking exclusively at those 'at home' readers who are enjoying every word of the commentary (HA HA) |
| 14th November 2009 Helen Ryan | - From: Ephesus Jason, you can't give up the blog, it is so interesting and I love reading about your adventures. Hope I get an opportunity to see your pictures. Keep safe, Helen |

| 14th November 2009 anonymous | - From: Ephesus Bring me back a souvenir or 2 if you can. There are a lot of second hand stores . Gold and leather items are supposed to be inexpensive. A pendant or a broach. Apple tea is also a specialty there. Mom |
| 12th November 2009 Nan | Reckless! - From: Selçuk Renting a motor bike? I vote against it! |
| 12th November 2009 Jenn | Oh my Jason - From: Berlin and Potsdam I want to see a self cleaning toilet in action! I love that out of your whole post - that was the part that I really wanted to see. Nice Ashley..... thanks for sharing :P Now I think I'm over my wish to see a self cleaning toilet |
| 12th November 2009 Jenn | 15 degrees and sunny! *whine* - From: Arrived Alive Okay I'm so behind but I'm going to see if I can catch up a big on your blogs. My family has been keeping me up to date on your happenings though - so I don't feel too left behind! :) I so want to go to Amsterdam - I'm so jealous! |
| 10th November 2009 Nan | Another city to explore - From: İzmir The little fellow sure enjoyed your company on the flight. You're VERY good with kids Jason. Trouble is, they take advantage of those who connect with them. Quite amusing that he couldn't talk to you but loved the contact just the same (ha ha) Izmir sounds like a very interesting spot -- you're having a great adventure. I would have been quite shocked to hear you had checked into the Hilton (one of these days, when you're a rich doctor) |
| 9th November 2009 Ashley | - From: Back to Munich deviled eggs?!?!? YUM! |
| 8th November 2009 Nan | Funny! - From: Back to Munich A bit on the lighter side --I find the 'ys' replaced by 'zs' familiar and funny!! I know you're using a German keyboard (ha ha) Very helpful roommate woke you up -- that was fortunate -- could have led to complications if you had slept in. Munich is a beautiful city. Jeff coming to NL. for a few day 18-22. You'll be back by that time. Take care. |
| 8th November 2009 Helen Ryan | - From: Warsaw and Auschwitz Jason that must have been such a moving experience, I am sure it would make me cry. Thank you for such a good description. I really enjoy your blog. Keep safe, Helen Ryan |
| 7th November 2009 Nan | Graphic description - From: Warsaw and Auschwitz You sure did the scene justice with your description Jason. There's many a dark period in our past history but when you think of it,, surely this must be THE darkest/ In Britain we were seeing pictures of the poor prisoners, swollen bellies, emaciated bodies, looks of despair on their faces and those were the few who somehow survived. It's really horrifying -- I agree and so very disturbing. At the same time, I think it's also important that people should SEE the evidence of Nazi barbarism and be thankful to God for the brave souls that sacrificed their lives to put an end to it. Armistice Day will soon be here --REMEMBER THEM. |
| 6th November 2009 Nan | Tartars - From: Krakow When we were kids -- a little while ago -- and we weren 't doing what we should --happened occasionally -- our parents would say we were 'Tartars' --name was synonymous with BAD Can't say I've heard the expression here. |
| 5th November 2009 Betty | The dark days of Europe - From: Off to Poland Hi Jason: Your're reliving some of the dark history of Europe -- interesting and absorbing to see the sites if the dark deeds. Very tragic. Just listening to the testimony of Decker the sole survivor of the helicopter crash --he's very good at recounting the experience. You'll no doubt read the media a/cs. Take care --don't get robbed. Nan |
| 5th November 2009 erin | - From: Off to Poland Good luck on the train! Sure isn't your man bag like "unstealable?" Pack all the important stuff in there...like Fanta. On a related note, you should do a commercial or something for that man bag, if it is still the same one, cause that's lasted forever. |
| 4th November 2009 Jeff | umbrella - From: Rainy Prague Hard to believe that thing is still going if it's the same one...I believe I ditched mine somewhere in Bosnia or Slovenia...both mom and dad called today (from home and NY), they must be missing you, lol. |
| 3rd November 2009 Betty | When in Rome . . . . - From: Rainy Prague Wie geht es Ihnen? Practice makes perfect in language and bidets! |

| 1st November 2009 Betty | Berlin - From: Busy day in Berlin How I wish I was young enough to travel through Europe again --completely fascinating, following your travel story Jason --next best thing! Hear there was a bear knocking on the windows in Yellowknife last night -- SCARY. |

| 22nd February 2009 B.Mackey | Homeward bound - From: Florence and Siena Hi Jason: 'All good things come to an end' so they say -- now you're heading west to the great country of Canada -- it will be nice to see you home again -- lots of snow and ice waiting to welcome you, but you'll have lots of great memories to tide you over the rest of the winter. I hope you have a pleasant, uninterrupted flight back. See you soon! Bye, N. |
| 21st February 2009 B. Mackey | 'David' - From: Florence and Siena Hi Jason: Just looked up the masterpiece to refresh my memory -- had to be awesome, magnificient, thrilling to see the REAL thing -- I find sculpture endlessly fascinating -- the way these artists so meticulously depict the human form is absolutely miraculous, eh? Imagine the prodigious effort that must go into creating a work of art like this. It is so HUGE -- absolutely awe-inspiring. Don't go wandering off tomorrow and miss you home flight (ha ha) . Hope NL. won't be too tame for you now! Bye, N |
| 21st February 2009 Lori | - From: Florence and Siena Well jason, I have to say that I have certainly enjoyed reading your travel blog!! Just wonderful! You sound like me the day before travelling, dont want to venture too far just in case! I do hope that you have a safe and uneventful trip home....and that the plane is quiet enough for you to sleep alllll the way home! safe travels my friend! Can't wait to read your last blog entry for this adventure! |
| 20th February 2009 B. Mackey | Going strong! - From: Pisa and on to Firenze Hi Jason: I see you're not slowing down --intending to get every little bit of this vacation -- you've got a few battle scars --the skin does dry out with constant exposure to the weather day in and day out -- used to happen to me years and years ago when I was on the berry field about 10 hours a day (groan) I've got a job waiting for you when you come back. I went into Can. Tire to buy a cover for my snow blower -- got one but noticed the 'clearance' rack. There was this Lexmark 310 for taking photos directly out of the camera. It was marked off at $20.00 so I thought I'd get it. When I opeed it, of course, installing it seemed like flying a jet to me (ha ha) so I'll have to get you at it if you have time. Had a couple of snow storms and my wrists are VERY painful handling the shovel. Lovely p..m. today though -- sunny and warm +5C. Yes, I thought it was Lori S. Bye for now, thanks for e-mail. N |
| 20th February 2009 Lori | - From: Trains and Bicycles heya jason...well just after looking at the city of Padua...well..I can certainly understand how you can be chrurched out! here were 27 photos of the city on this page...and I would say that 25 of them were churches.....lol....wow....even I would be churched out at all of that! |
| 20th February 2009 Lori | - From: A trip around the bay Well I just have to say that the Scrovegni Chapel is a breathtaking place and I am so jealous that you were there in person to see it. I figured that I am going to google every place that you have been so tha I can see exactly what you mean when you write! Phenomenal! Can't wait for your next entry from Pisa.....You know...there is a place in Ottawa that sells gelato...best ever!! LOL although I am sure not as good as the authentic Italaian made.....safe trip home on Monday Jason! |
| 19th February 2009 B. Mackey | Italian baymen? - From: A trip around the bay Hi Jason: Another interesting commentary. Your experiences and adventures are many and varied. Had to laugh at your dilemma with roommate -- hard to be a match for it, eh? The European transportation system is exercising your wits but you're winning out there. I'm looking forward to the pics of the marvelous scenery you're seeing -- sounds just fabulous. You're taking it all in -- down to the very last Italian outport (ha ha). Bye, N. |
| 19th February 2009 Jenn | You made me late for work - From: Trains and Bicycles Okay, I fell behind on your blog; I admit it. So I had to catch up and now I've made myself late for work. I'm putting the blame for this directly at your feet! So jealous Jason! Sounds like you are having a fabulous time. I would venture a guess that even with your tight wad tendencies it wasn't a cheap trip! Glad to know Jeff made it back to Canada all in one piece! |
| 19th February 2009 Jenn | So envious - From: Beautiful Venice Wow! I laughed quite a bit outloud on this one! It amused me greatly. One thing I forgot to comment on in earlier blog was the free toilet! Those should be mandatory I think :) Washing with your clothes on.... definitley unique. No sitting for the whole; definitley a pain. |
| 19th February 2009 Jenn | mmmm Gelato - From: Back in the sunshine mmmmmm yummy gelato |
| 19th February 2009 Jenn | Museum - From: What a good day to lose your gloves I bet I could have spent all day in that museum! Love them! |
| 19th February 2009 Jenn | Zou are having a good time - From: And then there was one... I think that was my favorite part. The "zou". I'm so jealous of the skiing; it's my new thing to be jealous of . Not quite so jealous of you bumming rides off of complete strangers who don't speak English.... I don't think we'd travel well together! |
| 19th February 2009 Jenn | Computer Games - From: Still in Sarajevo Well Jason, You know some people do take their computer games rather seriously. What were the brussel sprouts like? |
| 18th February 2009 B. Mackey | Quiet Padua - From: Trains and Bicycles Hi Jason: Time to get a breather from all the exciting things you've seen -- bike ride is good -- easy on the feet. Had a note from Jeffrey this a.m. He was leaving Ottawa last night --ran into your dad there -- neat! We're into a nasty snow and windstorm today - 100kph -- I was just out clearing away around the jeep --had a hassle yesterday with the blower --rag caught around the augur -- got it cleared and parked by the door but decided it wasn't worth the effort of 'unpacking' it --used the shovel --waiting now for Jodi -- I'm stranded. I'd like some of that mild Italian weather. You count your blessings! Bye, Nan |
| 18th February 2009 Helen Ryan | - From: Verona and Tunafish Jason, I am thoroughly enjoying reading your blog. Sounds like a wonderful vacation. Hope to see some pictures when you get back. Take care of yourself, Helen |
| 18th February 2009 Ashley | Gelato! - From: Beautiful Venice Jason! You can get delicious Gelato here!! When you come visit you can fill up on it again :) |
| 16th February 2009 B. Mackey | No stone unturned - From: Beautiful Venice Hi Jason: Sure enjoying your travel commentary --really funny sometimes --good trick washing your clothes ON. I don't think it would satisfy your mom though -- you've TEMPORARY escaped the clutches of authority. You don't seem to be ready to call it a day --sad at the thought of returning to real life. You don't miss a thing do you, even wearing your feet to the bone --very funny about the seats! --wonderful to be young and energetic. Carpe diem all the way! Go easy on that Italian Ice Cream -- too much of a good thing will make you fat. You dad is off to a Waste Management Convention this week. Nice to get away from the snow --we're in for another big storm tomorrow night (ugh). Think of us suffering here. Bye, Nan |
| 16th February 2009 Lori | Stunned once again.... - From: Beautiful Venice Wow jason....you are certainly having an experience of a lifetime!! Even though your poor feet are most likely hurting like hell, I am certain you wouldnt change a thing! Although I do have to say...not allowed to sit on the steps??? I find that really odd...and to have to pay 15 bucks to sit down in a bar?? Oh my.....keep blogging and I will keep reading.....and I am sure you will be happy when you get home! Can't wait to see your pictures! Have a terrific day tomorrow! Lori |
| 15th February 2009 B. Mackey | Moving along - From: Back in the sunshine Hi Jason: You've arrived in sunny Italy. Yeah, these train times ARE amusing --typlical European. I wouldn't mind if they were guaranteed to leave at that precise SECOND but the're not --far from it. Oh welll, 'When in Rome . . .' so they say. You like the Italian food? Very tasty sounding -- likely fattening (ha ha). Had Dave and your dad for lunch -- glad to see them. It's snowed all day -- the load of junks I got yesterday are buried in it. (ugh) I thought I might get a few days clear to move a lot of it, but no, Murphy's Law prevails. I hauled in about enough for 3 days last night. Saw the twins' photos taken in Gander -- one of you with a very happy face. You're right, they're redder than ever now --great looking babies though. You've still got a lot to see before you get back to NL. How're you gonna stand the monotony after the adventures you've had? Make the best of it. Bye, N |
| 14th February 2009 B. Mackey | Makking the most of Munich - From: A little bit of everything Hi Jason: Phew! Where do you get the energy to write such a detailed interesting decription of your travels after hoofing around all day? Sure makes for intriquing reading. As you say, Dachau (along with the rest of the concentration camps --Belsen was another infamous one) left a dark stain on humanity. I suppose it will forever remain a mystery how ONE dictator managed to 'control' almost the entire mass of the German people. The Olympic site is a beautiful spot -- you would have loved seeing it in May when the weather is really nice. You're travel savvy I see. P. & I had a hard time getting back from Dachau --just scrambled on to the last bus nin the evening --almost had to take a taxi out of it (God forbid). The driver said,'No more' but we pushed in anyway. Hope you get nice warm weather in Italy. Enjoy it! Bye, N |
