From Saigon we headed across to Phnom Penh in Cambodia. I had thought that one of the night buses in Vietnam was the bumpiest journey of my life (imagine being woken up as your whole body has left the bed you are laying on) but i was wrong. It was impossible to read as my body jolted relentlessly from side to side, with my arms also moving all over the place but in different directions to the rest of my body. A strange experience. We arrived in Phnom Penh expecting the worst as we had heard from other people that it wasn't the nicest of cities. Maybe because of this review we were pleasantly surprised. The Cambodian people were all very friendly and we spent the afternoon at the national museum and then walked down the ... read more

The 28 or so hours from Vang Vieng to Hanoi was uncomfortable in every sense of the word. There was first a connecting bus to Vietienne which was extremely cramped and had no air conditioning, followed by the 24 hour bus to Hanoi. While this had beds, after the first 8 or so hours it became pretty uncomfortable, made even worse that we were stuck at the back where three beds are put directly next to each other. I was stuck next to two girls, neither of them making any effort to talk so after about half an hour i gave up trying to make conversation and so we lay in pretty much silence for the rest of the trip but wedged in on the triple bed, not even able to sit up as the three ... read more

We set out from Chiang Mai at about 10am heading towards the Laos border at Chaing Kong. We got in the Mini bus and drove around picking people up from different hostels and immediately one person in particular stood out. He was a finnish bloke called Tony, and how he had got as far as he had i have no idea. For six hours on the bus we were listening to his travelling tales which involved taking an assortment of valium, morphine, opium and booze at varying levels over the space of a couple of months. He hadn't slept for two days, and on arrival at the border he bought a bottle announced that he had had 20 valium that day and went for a swim in the Mekong. After that he came back and then ... read more

The night train up to Chiang Mai was a great experience. We got on the train to find that we had booked a bunk each in the air conditioned carriage, a luxury which we hadn't experienced yet. After a short while the train got under way and as it was a night train we went to sleep. I was woken up by the slightly effeminate/semi ladyboy waiter telling me breakfast was ready. After eating I had a wander up the train and found that in the intersection between carriages the doors were open so that you could stick your head out of the moving train. After a while of sitting there soaking in the jungle and hills rolling by it was plain to see why hobos in america would do so also, it was a great ... read more

We stepped on the plane to Mumbai, fearing the worst as we were in "shuttle class" (one below economy) but were pleasntly suprised by ample leg room, a plethora of films to choose from, and an authentic indian curry for dinner. With our dinner we also got a complimentary Hennesey each which went down a treat. After changing in Mumbai the second flight was more what we expected, a bit more cramped and the only English film on was "The Company Men", which if you haven't seen it is extremely boring. As the flight was a bit shorter this wasn't a problem and we were soon arriving in Bangkok. No matter what any one had told me I still wasn't ready for just how hot Bangkok is. Our first indication was after landing at the airport ... read more
