jillscott - Jill Scott

Jill Scott I'm 25, living in Seattle finishing my law degree and master's degree in public health, and married to a gorgeous guy named Tristan. I am interning at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland for most of the summer, working at the International Health Regulations Secretariat (http://www.who.int/csr/ihr/en/) within Epdemic and Pandemic Alert and Response - it's like the mother ship is calling me home. Tristan will be with me for most of August, and then we'll go to South America to visit friends finishing up their Peace Corps stint in Paraguay. We'll check out the computer lab in their rural village, which Tristan helped make happen.

Thanks to the University of Washington Department of Global Health (Thomas Francis Jr. Global Health Fellowship) and the UW Public Interest Law Association/Student Health Law Association for their generous funding of my WHO adventure!

Au Paris Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris
Before I forget, I want to backtrack to last weekend for a moment, the one we spent in the Alps. I didn’t get to say much about that since we arrived back on Sunday night and I had to finish up at work the next week. We stayed in a chalet (belonging to the family we are housesitting for) for one night. First we took the train to a town called Bex, which seriously looks like the French provincial town that Belle sings about in Beauty and the Beast when she’s buying a baguette and going to the library. Then we [View Full Entry]

Finished at WHO Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Geneva
What a week it has been (I know I say that most weeks, but this one was too!). Where to start…I finished up my internship at WHO last Friday. Eight weeks of a very cool opportunity - some things were as I expected, others were totally different. I would say one of the best parts was meeting some really cool people (met some duds too, but there’s always duds). Also, it was crazy to think about the scope of the work of that organization. The client is essentially 193 countries and all their citizens. It’s tough to wrap the mind around [View Full Entry]

Pictures from our time at the fete de Geneve (where we rented a little boat that you take on lake and control with a joystick) and in Gryon this weekend (at the chalet). Highlight: in this little little village (really just 4 little cabins) they were having their summer festival, so a brass band played music for about 4 hours. We hiked around and the hills were actually alive with the sound of music!!! [View Full Entry]

Tristan is here! He actually got here on Monday, not Sunday, I read the itinerary wrong, so that was quite a bummer. But he made it and it feels so good to be together again. He is master of the housesitting - dog-walker, mail-getter, plant-waterer, etc. and he is excelling at that in between his 4 naps per day. To his credit, he is running a major sleep deficit from working full time and then going to school in the evenings. So it is nice that he has time to just relax. We walked around the fete de Genéve a few [View Full Entry]

Yay! Tomorrow is a national holiday, so it will be a long weekend! And to really make things good, Tristan arrives on Sunday! And for the cherry on top, my boss said I could take Monday off, since he is taking it off too! Perhaps I am overusing the exclamation point, but I think it merits using in this circumstance! I gave a brief presentation this morning to my supervisor's supervisor, as well as his supervisor. I designed this interface where we can organize, access, and store internal documents and procedures related to public health emergencies of international concern (a term [View Full Entry]

This has been my most used phrase in french. However, I have learned that sometimes it can be fun to not make this clear right off the bat. For example, I had a taxi driver last night who had a lot to get off his chest about (what I can only assume based on the stuntman style swerve we did around the car in front of us) was cars that don't move over when they want to turn left so you can get around them. He threw his hands up and waved them around and generally sounded quite pissed off for [View Full Entry]

Its been a rainy weekend after a tough week, and I decided to stay home and nap, think about the previous few days, and generally reflect on the state of the world. Luckily this house is a complete oasis and I feel lucky to have this space to just be. Cancer has been on my mind this week - our family lost a good friend (who was also my kindergarten teacher) to breast cancer on Wednesday, and my best buddy here remembered the 10th anniversary of her mother's death to cancer on Thursday. I keep thinking about my family's experience with [View Full Entry]
