SEMENGGOH NATURE RESERVE Rescued injured and abused wild orang utan are rehabilitated for a life in the wild but because there isn't sufficient natural jungle in the surrounding area to provide enough food for those released, they are offered supplemental feeding everyday. There is no interaction between the reserve staff and the animals, as the idea is to have them live as natural a life as possible. The food is dropped for them, and they choose whether or not to partake. If there is enough food in the forest only one or two may come. We were very fortunate to have seen two different clans, 11 animals in total, including 2 moms and their babies.... read more

Well, our time in beautiful Indonesia has come to an end. We have spent the last two weeks exploring the beautiful tropical islands of Bali, Lombok and Gili Trawangan. For the most part, Bali and the Gili Islands are totally about tourism. All the shops offer the classic souvenirs and restaurants cater to western tastes. You have to search very hard to find anything truly local in these places. That being said, we did enjoy our R&R at all of these places, lots of sun, sand and sea. Lombok is a little less touristy, and we enjoyed a day in the country side, soaking up the culture. We are off now to follow the trail of the head-hunters in Malaysian Borneo( hope we come back with ours!!!!... read more

The past month has been more about making friends and creating relationships than about sight seeing. We met up with our friend Liany in Singapore, then travelled with her to visit her sister in Jakarta. We spent a wonderful four days getting to know Irma, Augie and their daughters. We saw some of the sights of Jakarta, but spent a lot of time in traffic jams, which is totally a fact of life there. The city has gotten so big with unregulated growth, and infrastructure has not kept up. (city pop 3 million plus) Irma and Augie own their own toy importing business, so we were able to observe the day to day operations. On their one day off, they took us to a zoo a few hours drive out side Jakarta (well, supposed to be, ... read more

So, contrary to popular belief, we have not fallen off the face of the earth. This is the part of the trip we had most been looking forward to. Singapore is where our friend Liany lives . She and her sister share a 3 bedroom apartment, so we were fortunate enough to be able to stay with them and spend a couple of days doing fun stuff! Because of very strict, enforced rules, Singapore is a very clean city. There are heavy fines for many disdemeaners such as littering, chewing gum and spitting, drinking in public and many more. There are severe penalties for crime, as a result, for the most part it is a safe city. We spent a day with Liany at the new Universal Studios and a day at Jurong bird park, then ... read more

Melaka history dates back to 1400, when it was a major trading centre and is still considered a major sea-port today. It has been occupied by the Portugese, the Dutch and the British and much of the architecture still remains, making for interesting exploring. We spent a lot of time exploring the old city, had a walk along the canal, took a boat tour and generally checked everything out. Next installment: Singapore... read more

I think I have writers block!!! Have been trying to come up with something clever to make the transition into Malaysia sound more interesting. But the plain truth is we had an uneventful flight from Phuket to Kuala Lumpur. Kuala Lumpur, the sencond time around, didn't seem quite as daunting as the first time we visited. We have definetly evolved since that first vist, become seasoned travellers I suppose. Anyway, we hit all the hot spots, Petronis towers, little India, China town, rode the hop on hop off bus, and visited Lake Gardens, an oasis in the middle of the city. From Kuala Lumpur we hired a car to bring us to where we are now, Port Dickson, a small seaside village on the west coast. Here we have just spent a leisurely week. It has ... read more

So, we spent a total of 3 weeks enjoying Phuket and it's surroundings. New Year's eve day was spent sailing in Phang Nga bay, and New years eve was spent wandering the streets of Patong. Phang Nga Bay is made up of a number of limestone karsts, or outcrops, which makes for interesting exploring. We took a small canoe from the sail boat and used it to enter and explore many of the openings and caves in the area. At one place we paddled through an opening and inside was open to the sky, sort of a pond surrounded by trees and hills. Hard to explain, neat to see. Lunch was prepared on board, and transfered to shore for a picnic. Seafood for lunch was purchased from fisherman over the side of the boat. Doesn't get ... read more

We arrived in Phuket on Dec 12, only to find the hotel we had booked for three weeks turned out to be less than suitable. It involved a lot of false advertising as to location and to the state of the rooms. The icing on the cake was when we were told we could not use the pool because there was broken glass in it and maybe it would be cleaned out tomorrow. After a terrible night of noise and partying from the young Italian men this place seems to attract, we decided we could not stay there, and went off in search of something more suitable. We just happened to walk past a travel agent who had a sign in the window advertising a. condo for rent. We went in, went to see the condo, ... read more

On Dec. 5 we said farewell to Cambodia and flew into Bangkok, Thailand, then took a bus to Pattaya. We had heard a lot about it, but turns out to be great if you are into the bar scene, or you are a single old man looking for companionship. We had booked our hotel for a week, so decided to turn a blind eye and just make the best of it. We enjoyed walking along the great sea-wall, and generally exploring the area. We did the usual city tour of temples and points of interest, helps to get the lay of the land. Then, someone suggested we visit the Sanctuary of Truth, and we're glad we did. Sanctuary of Truth. One man's vision was to have "the magnificence of heaven re-created on earth". It is very hard ... read more
