Ron: Saturday 22nd Left Potes and made our sinuous but beautiful way back along the gorge to the coast. Made better progress than anticipated so carried on past Santander to Islares. The campsite is situated between looming mountains and the sea. As we pitched paragliders floated over our heads. Eagles and vultures were using the same thermals. The local town of Orinales is accessible by beach at low tide. There is a big tidal range, the beach by the campsite reduces to the size of a tablecloth at high tide. There are thousands of small crabe exposed on rocks by the falling tide which are great fun to try and catch. We has excellent tortillas in the cafe overlooking the small harbour which was excellent. This is another very Spanish family oriented site with late meals ... read more

The road from the coast to Potes passes through an incredible picturesque gorge of twisting bends. We stopped in Potes for a "Menu del Dia" which included a large carafe of delicious red wine. Because Ron still had some driving to do I had the lovely task of trying to drink it all myself. I needed a nap once encamped. The campsite is set beside a massive ridge of mountains. Much of the fun at this campsite was observing our neighbouring spanish family. The weather was incredibly hot but fortunately there was a lovely pool to cool off in. We indulged ourselves with a chauffeured 4x4 wheeled drive into the heart of the Picos mountains travelling remote tracks. We were dropped off in the mountain village of Cain and did an incredible walk through the Cares ... read more

After 20 minutes in the scorching sunshine we finally managed to work out how to use the parking meter and then entered the Guggenheim Museum, an impressive structure of titanium and glass, itself a stunning piece of art. The exhibits inside are equally stimulating, some on a huge scale. Definitely worth the visit. We then sped along the coast to a campsite near Comillas. It was a very spanish famiy oriented site. The nearest beach was a short cycle ride away. The actual town of Comillas was buzzing with a local festival. Comillas features a Gaudi built house. ... read more

Wednesday evening two very excited campers boarded the Pride of Bilbao. As we left port we celebrated with a bottle of bubbly as the English coast disappeared from view. Our cabin was large and comfy. The unexpected bonus on this crossing is the possibility of seeing whales in the Bay of Biscay. As it happened we only saw dolphins. There is plenty of entertainment on board including bars, casino, cinemas and entertainers (including a pianist with a very Suffolk accent). Friday morning we disembarked and headed straight for Bilbao.... read more

After some frantic last minute packing we finally left Salhouse on the Saturday afternoon and moved to our first campsite in the fine city of Norwich. Dale, Kate and Tim came to say farewell. We watched the world final in the local. Finally we left for Portsmouth on the Monday morning. Two nights were spent on a very pleasant site near Chichester. ... read more
