August 1st 2007

Hey all, well Danielle and I survived a week on Ko Pha Ngan (and the Full Moon Party). What did we do for a week? Pretty much a whole lotta nothing! We stayed in the "party town" on the island, Hat Rin, athough it was pretty tame for the first five nights. We sunbathed, shopped, read the final Harry Potter, and watched a lot of movies that they play at restaurants/bars here. Oh, we did go on a boat tour one day, where we went snorkeling and went to some other beaches and a waterfall. I do have to say that the beaches on this island are definitely not as nice as Ko Phi Phi (although still nice). Danielle did go scuba diving one day, and took massage school, so really it was mostly me ... read more

Yes, the title is correct - I am a big loser and dropped out of the Scuba Certification class! More on that later though. First I'll tell you about Ko Phi Phi, where we stayed for 6 days. We flew from Laos down to Phuket, Thailand. We only stayed one night in Phuket. Originally we planned to stay longer, but that place was really tacky and gross. The beach looked fine, but the town we were in (Patong Beach) reminded me of Vegas 20 years ago. Lots of cheap minimalls, neon, tons of billboards, ugly signs, McDonalds, 7-11, Burger King....soooo tacky. Anyway, we left via ferry to the island of Ko Phi Phi. Ko Phi Phi has no roads - which means obviously no cars, motorbikes, etc. Just some guesthouses, bungalows, and a few shops. To ... read more

Okay, so although it is tiring writing these, I'm still trying to keep up! Most recently we spent 5 days in Luang Prabang, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, which meant that there were lots of visitors and everything had jacked up prices. The town is really pretty, with great French Colonial architecture everywhere, as well as lots and lots of Buddhist wats, some of which are as old as the year 1500. The food continued to be good, and we spent some time walking around town, looking at the Mekong River which runs next to it, and visiting the temples. One day we went on a kayaking trip, which was really fun. We went up river (to a different river) and paddled downriver. Supposedly it was "whitewater" kayaking, but there were only short ... read more

Well, we just finished up two nights in Vang Vieng and are now in Luang Prabang for (gasp!) 4 whole nights! Vang Vieng was a pretty cool little place, it is nestled in this really green area surrounded by big limestone mountains covered with green. The town mainly seems to be a place to come and chill out, and do a few various outdoor activities. We chose to go tubing, which means a tuk tuk drove us upriver several kilometers and then dropped us off with inner tubes. Then you just get into the river and float back downstream. There are all these wooden, makeshift bars along the way, many of which have rope swings and zip lines. We stopped off for a beer at one, and the old lady who ran the place also ... read more

July 13th 2007

Well, we flew from Hanoi to Vientiane, the capital of Laos the other day, and so far I gotta say, I love this country! Immediately, several things were apparant: first, the quiet. No horn honking!! After two weeks in Vietnam, where I probably sustained hearing loss due to the constant horns (I'm not kidding, literally every moto just drives down the street honking, just to let everyone know they are there). After two days in Vientiane, we never heard a horn honk! The next thing I noticed is how clean it is. One tends to think of Laos as on the par monetarily with Cambodia (or at least I did/do), but everything here is so much cleaner. Even the poor parts where people live in shacks, quite clean, even the marketplace, very clean! Another thing ... read more

July 11th 2007

Well we returned from our lovely Halong Bay boat trip back to the insanity of Hanoi. But I think the few days of relaxation relieved me a bit of my bad mood, and I took a more Zen/bemused take on Hanoi. The traffic and horn honking still got to me a bit, but not nearly so much. And amazingly, no one hit me (for once)! I think Hue was just particularly bad, and that is what did me in. These last few days in Hanoi weren't too bad. After getting back, we hung out for the next couple days with some of our new friends from the boat trip. We had too many drinks and then visited some museums (not on the same day) - including the History Museum which oddly enough doesn't include any ... read more

Finally I have had a good - or should I say great - experience in Vietnam. We just got back from a trip to Halong Bay that was 2-nites/3 days. We took the "deluxe" tour (everything except drinks was included for $85) which ended up being great, so I have no complaints. Halong Bay is in the Gulf of Tonkin in the way north of Vietnam. It was by far the most scenic thing, most fun thing we've done so far in Vietnam, and I think I'd even say it was one of the better mini-tours I've ever done anywhere. We first took a bus with our group to Halong City, which was about a 3 hour ride. There were 16 of us in all, and luckily everyone was cool. We were the only Americans, ... read more

Well the whirlwind tour continues. I think we are both getting a bit tired! Luckily we just arrived in Hanoi this morning, having taken our last overnight bus of the trip, hopefully. We've also booked a few plane tickets for later in our journey, so that will really be something to look forward to! Tomorrow we leave for a trip to Halong Bay which should be relaxing...then we come back to Hanoi for the real visit of the city. Anyway, I've been in a fairly bad mood recently and have a short fuse. The main problem is that there are so many gross and/or obnoxious guys to deal with, so that makes me really frustrated! Here is a list of things that has happened to me in approximately a 36 hour period: Been slapped on ... read more

July 4th 2007

Hi everyone, well our ridiculously fast-paced tour of Vietnam continues! Most recently we spend two days in Hoi An, which has been my favorite Vietnamese city so far - mainly because it consists of amazing shopping! Also it is really picturesque. The town is much smaller than the places we've been, and thus much quieter (e.g. way less horn honking). There are still lots of motorbikes but more regular bikes in the mix. There is an "old town" section which consists of lots of really old and quaint buildings. Many have Chinese architecture/decoration because I guess way back in the day there were Chinese people in this particular city. All the buildings are two stories high, lots of flowers and it's all very lovely. But the best part of this place is the tailors! Literally ... read more

July 2nd 2007

We took an overnight bus from Saigon to the beach town of Nha Trang. I have to say, with a few small exceptions, I didn't enjoy my time here very much...more below: Good Things About Nha Trang: -I had the best Indian food of my life here! Delicious! -I had the best massage ever! (And we've had quite a few massages on this trip.). I was a little more expensive than we've been paying (and by that I mean it was $12 for an hour instead of $7), but this was an actual fancy day spa complete with ambiance and all that good stuff. -Parasailing! We each took a ride, which lasted about 3 minutes. It cost about $12 which was totally worth it, especially considering in most other places that would cost way more. ... read more
