San Elijo State Beach is in the small beach community of Cardiff-By-The-Sea, which is in the town of Encinitas. The State Park is on a high bluff on the north end and slowly reachs sea level at the south end, which is where we are staying. Here are some photos of our Motorhome and the park The beach has suffered a lot of damage in the rain storms this winter. About 6 feet of one bank has eroded. The Life guard tower will have to be destroyed because of the erosion damage. ... read more

After we left Albuquerque, we stopped in Hatch for a great protest lunch (See Save the Pig). We then stayed 4 nights at Jeff's cousin's home in Tucson. If you know Tucson, Jeff's cousin lives a half mile from the east end of Broadway Blvd, across the street from the Saguaro National Park. Tucson was rainy and cool. When we arrived, their driveway was muddy and our 18,000 lb RV left some good ruts. Jeff racked the driveway while it was still muddy, because it turns to concrete when it dries. We made a rainy day trip to Tubac, a small artist town, about 40 miles south of Tucson and visited an amazing restored mission, San Xavier del Bac. It was completely restored a few years ago. PBS made a movie about the restoration process, which ... read more

We camped the first night at San Felipe Casino, just north of Albuquerque. That night we watched a local new story about Hatch NM, which is on I25 at the junction of the bypass to head west on I10. In Hatch there is a barbeque restaurant, called Sparkeys. Sparky's has a large Pig sign on a trailer. The State if New Mexico has decided that this sign does not comply with some regulations and wants it removed. This story has given the restaurant a lot of free advertising. They now have "Save the pig T-Shirts and other stuff. If you have never been in Hatch, which is the chili pepper capital of NM, there are many very large signs of Chili Peppers. These seem to be ok with the state Because of the story, we made ... read more

We left for California this morning. We had about 2 inches of fresh snow, but there was no snow and sunny just south of Colorado Springs. My street was icy, but the other streets were just wet. Luckily the storm was more north. The attached photo show what we are traveling in. The RV and Saturn Vue that we are towing are disgustingly dirty. Tomorrow we drive to Tucson and stay 4 nights with my cousin. We are camping at the Indian casino just north of Albuquerque. I am on the computer keeping Terry company while Jan gambles away are life savings. ... read more

We rented a card at Denver Airport on New Year's Eve to get home after flying from LA. For many years I a have declined the extra insurance that car rental firms offer at about $20 per day. I have always used my credit card as my insurance. Credit Card insurance really works. In November 2008, we spend 3 weeks in New Zealand with a rental car. Before the trip, I called my credit card company, Chase Visa, to see if the insurance was valid in New Zealand and I was told that it was. In New Zealand, if you don't accept the rental company insurance, you are obligated for the first $5000. We picked up the car in Christchurch and I declined all insurance, and I hoped that it would be ok. About 10 days ... read more

We got home from LA in News Years Eve. We were very lucky. Most days the flights from LA to Houston were completely overbooked. Thursday look the best with a couple of flights with seats. Russ drove us to LAX at 6 am for a 9 am flight. We got there in 40 minutes instead of the usual 1 to 2 hours. We got on the 8 am flight to Houston instead of the 9 am flight. We then could not get on the next 2 flights to Colorado Springs from Houston. The last flight at 6pm looked just as bad so we tried to get on Denver flights. We missed the first but we got the last 2 seats on the next flight. There was one more flight that day if we had needed it. ... read more

This year we decided to fly standby to LA for Christmas. Big mistake!!! Our son Dave is a pilot for Continental and we get free coach travel anywhere in the world that Continental flies. Standby used to be relatively easy. Now the planes are most full all of the time. We wanted fly to LA on Sunday, December 20 because we had a party on Saturday night that we did not want to miss. With continental, we have to fly through Houston to get anywhere. There are 4 flights a day from Colorado Springs to Houston and many flights from Houston to LA We can logon to a special Continental web site for employee family members to book and check flight for standby The last flight at 4:45 had 11 seats 4 days before we were ... read more

We are spending Christmas this year in LA at Russ' house. We hope to fly standby on Sunday 12/20. If you didn't know, Dave is a Pilot with Continental Airlines and we get FREE flying. Free flying sound great, but there has to be empty seats and we get in line with the other employees and their families. My place in line is based on Dave's seniority date. It is very hard to use standby for the holidays, but we are taking our chances and we don't mind getting stuck in warm and mostly sunny LA. It might take us 2 days to get there, but it is free. Dave and his family will also be in LA for Christmas and we will all get togother on December 26. We also plan to drive to San ... read more

We made a comittment to travel when the kids were very small. Even though, we didn't have much money, we tried to take a trip every year. We ate a lot of Dinty Moore beef stew. Our first RV was borrowed from Jan's parents. it was a small tent trailer, with a tent that folded onto the ground. The trailer was the bed. We took two trips with this trailer from Mass. to Montreal for the Worlds Fair in 1967 and to Florida in 1969. In 1974, we bought an Apache tent trailer and took a trip from Colorado Springs to Disneyland and San Diego. This trailer was OK but too small so we sold it and bought a much bigger, Wheel Tent Trailer. In 1978, we sold the Wheel camper and bought a 20 foot ... read more

North America » Bermuda December 4th 2009

In May 2010, we have booked a 7 day cruise to Bermuda on Holland America Lines. The cruise leaves out of Manhattan on May 29th and returns on June 6th. We will fly to Newark on Saturday May 28. We were lucky enough to use frequent Flyer miles on United to get from Colorado Springs to Newark. We picked Newark, because of the hotel. The hotels in Manhattan and near JFK were $250 to $400. I got a Holiday Inn near the Newark airport for $75. It is the same distance from Newark to the ship as from JFK. We were in Bermuda in 1966 for a delayed honeymoon... read more
