Scottish Highlands The third day staying in Glasgow we rented a car (thanks for the deal Bert) and Dylan took over leading us North to the Scottish Highlands. We drove around for hours with nothing but rivers, lakes, mountains, and waterfalls. We did one hike through the mountains which was dangerously close to a long drop down. You could walk each trail for hours but we would go for an hour or 2 then head back to the car and keep on driving. We headed to Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK, and decided to begin the trek. It said it takes 6-8 hours to hike, so we thought we would do our best. Dylan had decided he would be the most fashionable person on the hill that day, so he wore casual shoes, ... read more

Glasgow and Edinburgh We arrived in Glasgow where the great Dylan Login (soon to be Dr. Logan) greeted us at the train station and walked us back to his residence at the University of Glasgow. Our plan was to save money and stay his place for 4 nights. We went out to a few pubs, one of which had an open mic and the people in the crowd were all very good. I spoke with a local at the bar about Canada answering all of her questions, which to Dylan was funny enough to have my own HBO comedy special. Lowry compared Glasgow to Hamilton because it had a few rough looking neighbourhoods, and we spent the next 4 days making fun of Dylan saying that he moved all the way to Scotland to live ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Brussels-Capital Region » Brussels August 14th 2009

Brussels, Belgium Arriving in Brussels later than expected, and having to leave early the next day, we had to make the most of our time. The problem was, we did now know a lot about the city or what to do exactly. Our first stop was a place that reminds you of Belgium...Pizza Hut. We ordered a large pizza, but just to feel cultured, we ordered some fancy Belgian beers along with it (you can buy beer anywhere in Europe). We asked the waitress to point us to the city centre, which was about a 15-minute walk away from where we were staying. We had lucked out in Brussels, because all of the sites seemed to be very close together. There are numerous giant statues, monuments, and gardens leading the main attraction in Brussels called Grand ... read more

Amsterdam We took an overnight ferry from London to Amsterdam across the North Sea...not knowing what to expect, the ferry was more like a cruise ship, with a bar, blackjack and roulette tables, a restaurant, and a movie theatre, as well as our own room and bathrooms. This was far too classy for us, but we did our best to fit in like we knew what we were doing. We arrived in Amsterdam and finally found our shuttle that was taking us out to Noordwijk, a small town on the beach about an hour outside of Amsterdam. On the way to Noordwijk we passed fields of cows, sheep, and windmills. Our hostel there was as much fun as a hostel could be. There was a middle-aged man named Vernon, who was without a doubt the most ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » London City August 5th 2009

London We arrived in London in the morning and had the challenge of finding our hostel. Even though they speak English here, we still struggled understanding a word that the first few people that we spoke with were saying. Finally we found someone who spoke a form of English that we could undsertand and we made our way into town. The first person that we met on the whole trip was about 5 minutes into our train ride, and she was from St. Catharines and lives in Toronto. The first day was tough to overcome the jet lag so we wondered around the area that our hostel was in, Camden, and quickly realized another cultural difference...driving. Getting used to crossing the street when the cars are on the other side of the road seemed to be ... read more
