Maui Wowie! I surprised Dawn with a trip to Maui for her 50th birthday.<span><span><span><span><span><span> We had talked about going for a long time and so this was a great opportunity.<span>We flew American out of Houston and had to change planes in Dallas and Los Angeles so it was an exhausting trip to get there. We arrived at 8:00pm at night so it was dark and there was a light drizzle.<span> But, we were pleasantly surprised the next morning by the gorgeous weather since weather.com had predicted 30% chance of rain every day.<span> I learned you really have to check the weather on the specific part of the island that you’re staying on because the weather can vary so much from one part of the island to another. I had booked the Mana Kai Maui and a ... read more
Orange County, August 17-21, 2011 My brother was getting married in Orange County so we decided to make it a mini-vacation. I had enough mileage for the tickets and Dawn has a cousin in Los Alamitos who offered to have us stay there so it promised to be an nice and inexpensive trip. The flights turned out to be non-stop but they were on American Eagle, not American like I thought. We flew out of Houston Intercontinental. Everything was fine until we landed at LAX airport. (I should have booked us into John Wayne airport but didn’t think of it.) When we landed at LAX the plane went to a small terminal that looked like something temporary or a small town terminal, like maybe Abilene, except really crowded. After using the bathroom we had to ride ... read more
OUR BIG FAT GREEK VACATION It had come time for Dawn’s kids to come home from staying with their father in Greece for the summer. After putting it off last summer, we committed to going to Greece to pick them up this time. The journey started with booking our flight. We weren’t going to need a hotel since Dawn has friends and family there. We stopped by the travel agent only to learn that you had to have your passports with you to book international flights. Dawn was waiting for hers to be renewed which she did receive about two weeks later. So we went back to the travel agent. Unfortunately, we were disappointed with the service and the prices so we decided to book it ourselves through Continental’s web site. We had to stick with ... read more
BUFFALO / NIAGARA FALLS / ROCHESTER I had missed my 30th high school reunion due to my flight to Buffalo being cancelled as hurricane Rita approached the Houston area. So when the school’s 50th Jubilee came up this year to coincide with my 35th reunion I couldn’t pass it up. I had wanted to go to a reunion for years. I hadn’t kept up with anyone from high school since I moved from Buffalo to Houston 29 years ago. This would also be an opportunity for Dawn to meet friends and family of mine that she had never met. Also, she had never been to Niagara Falls so I booked a hotel there to turn the trip into a vacation as well. She had a free flight coming to her on Southwest so that determined which ... read more
Each New Year’s Eve we try to do something special. Dawn had recently been to Natchitoches, Louisiana (pronounced Nakatish) on a business trip and raved about how beautiful it was. It was the site of the film “Steel Magnolias”. If you saw that film you saw a good amount of the local scenery. The Cane River runs through the middle of the town. There is a nice little park along the shoreline. Shops and restaurants line Front Street which runs along the river and is the centerpiece for tourism and events. The main attraction at Christmastime is the “Festival of Lights” The river along the downtown area is lined on both sides with an incredible display of Christmas lights. Front Street also has strings of lights above the street criss-crossing it through the downtown area. The ... read more
Cruisin' In Santa Cruz My 27 year old niece, Erika, was getting married I Santa Cruz so I planned a weekend trip to attend. I wanted Dawn to go with me so she could meet some of the family she hasn’t met yet as well. I had just spent a week in San Jose with a short side trip to Santa Cruz three months earlier so I knew the area fairly well already. I hadn’t gotten to see Santa Cruz beach or the boardwalk though so I definitely wanted to see that. Dawn had earned a free ticket on Southwest and my brother offered me his free ticket on Southwest that he had earned so airfare was a slam dunk. I hunted for a hotel and debated whether or not to stay in Santa Cruz where ... read more
San Francisco Treat! My brother, who lives northeast of San Francisco in Benecia, thought it would be a good idea to have my mother and I come visit his family during the Christmas holidays. It sounded like a good idea so I started looking at package deals online. I wanted Dawn to go with me so that meant that we would drive to Dallas to pick up my mother and fly from there to San Francisco. I looked extensively on expedia.com for a good deal for the period of December 26 to December 30. The prices on Expedia were a little better than on Priceline. Prices went up and down while I was looking but I happened to catch them while they were down. I booked the Galleria Park Hotel for four nights with airfare on ... read more
Das Mueller Haus! Our New Year’s Adventure in Fredericksburg, Texas I can’t recall how Dawn got the idea to spend New Year’s Eve 2007 in a rental house in Fredericksburg but it was a great idea. It’s a quaint German town in the central Texas hill country. It’s Main Street has numerous touristy shops and restaurants and museums. Nearby are Enchanted Rock and Pedernales Falls which are both great places to hike and experience nature. She found a nice little three bedroom cottage near the center of town called Das Mueller Haus. We immediately found ourselves saying “DAS MUELLER HAUS!” loudly and with vigor in a guttural German accent. This set the tone for our complete mangling of the German language during our stay, but it sure added some fun to the trip. The drive from ... read more
New York In a New York MinuteDawn had to go to New York to pick up her kids who were returning from Greece after staying with their father for the summer. She decided to make a little trip out of it and made reservations for two days before they arrived to spend a little time sightseeing and asked if I wanted to go as well. I thought, “What could we do in just two days?” But we always manage to have a spectacular time wherever we go so I started looking for cheap airfares on Priceline and Expedia. Dawn booked the Hilton Newark Airport since the kids were flying into Newark Liberty Airport. I managed to get a good fair into on Priceline on Continental and even managed to get on the same flight coming back ... read more
Rio, Baby! Spectacular Travel on the Cheap Where to go? I’ve had the travel bug for several years now. Earlier this year I felt the need to take a trip. I had enough mileage for a free domestic plane ticket so that meant we only had to buy one. Then a credit card deal came in the mail for 25,000 free miles on American Airlines if you signed up for a Citi credit card. Normally, I only get a credit if there is a great deal on the interest rate but this was too tempting. With this, I thought, Dawn and I would have enough mileage for two domestic tickets or one international ticket. I love Europe so I began looking at those options and how much it would cost to buy enough mileage to ... read more
