I was a bit saddened to have only spent a few short hours in downtown Philadelphia, but last night when we FINALLY got to our hotel in Jersey (suffice it to say we got lost, and between traffic issues around DC and Baltimore, we didn't get to the hotel until late) we were exhausted and made a decision to just spend a half day (today) in Philly. If we could get there. Jersey didn't play nice with us. I thought getting lost once would be fine, but apparently the state deemed it necessary for us to lose our way to the train station where we were supposed to hop a train to get to the heart of Philly. The roads around Camden are very confusing, often times cutting around a traffic circle unexpectedly and then ... read more

And it was so much fun! So today, Keith and I woke up and made our way to the train station to go to the zoo. That was a bit complicated, not in getting there but the because of getting tickets. Like New York and Chicago, you buy your tickets from an automated ticket booth, but we also needed a SmarTrip card to also pay for parking at the station. That took a good ten minutes to figure out how to buy one of those (key: find the SmarTrip machine, different from the regular booths...). But once we ... read more

And so I am on the road again. This setting: roughly a two week trip to New England. So today, we started out for Washington, DC, and a little bit later than I had wanted to originally. But it all worked out, the drive wasn't bad at all (then again, for me, most drives are enjoyable) and we got into our hotel in Alexandria, Virginia, after a bad bout of traffic on the Capital Beltway just in time to catch the season finale of The Office (amazing, by the way). Once The Office had finished and we had washed up a bit, Keith and I decided to search for some food along our way to the downtown of Washington DC. We got back on the highway, a familiar sight, and cruised northward. It was a ... read more

The simple plan of the day was to wake up, grab food, go to Humpback Rocks to do some hiking, come back, and enjoy the rest of the day. As you can probably guess, that's not what happened. We did get up, and we did get food. We did, also, make it to Humpback Rocks in Shenandoah National Park; however, before we got there, we got stopped and searched by a National Park Ranger/fake policeman. Rob was speeding, and just before we made it to the parking lot below Humpback Rocks, he saw the flashing lights behind him and had to pull over. I really didn't know that National Park patrolmen had the authority to pull people over and write tickets until now. The ranger came ... read more

Trip to UVaLiz Toms Well, I'm on the road again. This time I'm driving to Charlottesville, Virginia, again. I had to make one last trip to one of my favorite places before everyone graduates from UVa in a few weeks. Keith and I set off Thursday night after watching The Office (which was insanely hilarious, by the way) and made our way through the night to Virginia. Usually, to cut down on the time and mileage it takes to travel from Champaign to C'ville, I go through Indiana to Dayton, Ohio, where I cut down 35 to Charleston, West Virginia, and then on to Charlottesville. Out of all the driving trips I've made to UVa I've taken this route the majority of the time. The other times I've gone through Kentucky on the route that Rand ... read more

Wandering through the Big AppleLiz Toms I dig New York City. I feel like it's such a different city than any other, but for reasons I can't really put my finger on. Maybe I'll have to spend more time here to really know why I feel that way. My best guess right now is probably because of the sheer size of it. Everywhere you go, there is something. Tall buildings, people, shops, trash, street vendor here, street vendor there, landmark here, landmark there, apartments, delis, newspaper stands, hot dog stands, peanut stands, ethnic food stands, squares, gardens... all over and over again. I would imagine that you could spend a week here, doing nothing but tourist things in Manhattan alone, and still have so much more to see and do. Then you have the the other ... read more

New York, here I come!Liz Toms I feel like Kerouac in a way, and I love it. A month ago I was on the west coast in LA, and now here I am in a hotel on Wall Street in the Financial District of Manhattan. It's almost surreal, and definitely not good for my wanderlust (or maybe just what I need; a quick fix). An aside: just in case you don't know... I'm currently reading On The Road, and I have three things to say about that. 1) I feel like I'm living the book in a modern 2007 kind of way. I literally was driving from Baltimore to NYC today as I was reading how Kerouac drives to NYC via Baltimore with Dean, Ed, and Marylou in Part I. Plus, his trip to San Fran/LA ... read more

As much as I love U of I, man... I'd love to be back on the west coast right now. It was such a great trip. Looking at it either as a whole, or part by part, just continues to wow me either which way. We did a lot, and saw a lot, and were in a lot of place... read more

LA to Vegas, via some OC actionLiz Toms WOW WOW WOW. So, we're in Vegas now, via Newport Beach to do a little OC action (it was nice to see Orange County and the now famous town thanks to the drama filled show that I used to love). We've been here since Friday. We're here for two Dave Matthews Band shows, which are kind of the reason for the whole trip as a whole .When we found out that the shows would fall on the last weekend of our spring break, it was a no-brainer how we would spend it. Going to BYU and California were just additional bonuses to fill the time before the shows, provided we got to them. It took a long while to get here, thanks to both the infamous traffic on ... read more

I LOVE THE OCEAN. I just have to say that. It's hard to say that this was the best part of the trip because of how great the whole thing is/will be... but I can at least say today on the beach has been as good as any other day (that says a lot). We got up, grabbed a bite to eat, walked over to the beach, and pretty much stayed there all day. The weather was great... and though the ocean was freezing cold, we still got to wade out and play in it. It's really not that bad once you get used to it. The waves will rock you though, if you catch them just right. One thing I love about the ocean is how much you learn to respect it once you ... read more
