| 30th May 2008 Alproud | It's the coolest restaurant in SHKODRA - From: Albania (What else do you need to say?) I have been part of the staff for a while at this restaurant as a waiter. I have had other experiences and worked for "fancy" restaurants in Albania, but the food you can find there is impossible to find somewhere else. It is just amazing and very tasteful. I recommend it as the best place to go and have the most tasteful meal you can ever find. Also an other advantage is the history, the atmosphere and the old stuff you can find there that makes you feel something original, something rare in its type. |
| 26th June 2007 lucky girl | nice - From: Albania (What else do you need to say?) very nice, I'm from shkodra, albania and I really liked the fact that you enjoyed your stay at my home town, I know that my people are kind.... hospitality is in our tradition, and I'm glad you could feel it........and thanks for your appreciation of our food :-) |
| 21st March 2007 Alba | you're a good guy - From: Albania (What else do you need to say?) i've read many articles that describe albania, and to be honest with you, i was waiting for this one to be as insulting as some of the other ones. I'm glad you are open minded enough to understand that there's good and bad everywhere. nothing and no one is perfect. ive lived there for 14 years before moving to new york in 2002. i still love albania, its my home. and so i am thanking you for your comments. lots of love Alba |
| 15th October 2006 mirela | soo funny - From: Albania (What else do you need to say?) hello, how are u doing? it's wonderfull the way u describe the dust in the face and crasy drivers on the streets :)) it is true.. it is funny.. i adore albania, is the best place for me( may be couse im albanian ;) anyway.. im glad u liked there. have a good time |

| 27th June 2006 Visar | Great Story! - From: Happy 4th of July That is a great story. I was in Kosovo last summer myself. People are pro American there because they dont trust their European neighbours. The conflict of 1999 is a mistake of 1912. Thats the year when all albanians wanted the European powers to recognize their country. Instead, Europe gave Kosovo to Serbia, many towns to Montenegro, and many cities and towns to Macedonia, and Greece. Having sasid that I try not to look back, I look forward, unlike my Serbian friend here in this guestbook. If anything was to be decided over historical facts you would be out of Kosovo long time ago. It is a documented fact that Slavic people moved to the balkans in the late 7 centuries from central Asia. It is also a fact that Albanians are direct decendents of the Ilirians. Ilirians have lived in the balkans for thousands of years. So stop yappin about how Kosovo is the heart of Serbia because no one is really listening nor do they care. If Kosovo indeed was the heart of Serbia, it wouldnt be the poorest region in the Balkans. Anyways, sorry for getting off topic. Thats an amazing experience, and thank you for visiting my country. Come back again! :) |
| 18th June 2006 zak | whatever - From: Let's Play Dodge the Cars Whatever it is for you,AlBANIA is my country and i love it to much,i dont care what you are saing here ,bla bla bla , dont worry we will ribuild our country, is our history, and you dont know about, that is what you are expresing your fealings, only as you see but with out knowing any thing else, like a blind person, is nice any way my friends, |
| 22nd May 2006 Agne | from Uzupis - From: Welcome to the Baltics Hi, i'm from Republic of angels :) i'm realy glad, that u do like Vilnius and Uzupis, becouse i'm inlove with this district! But i don't like, that it becomes more and more popular. Uzupis is under very big construction. More and more rich people come here to live. So, after 5 years ore faster Uzupis will be very different than today... |

| 28th February 2006 Stefan SERB | Kosovo - From: Happy 4th of July Kosovo is Serbian whether you all like it or not, our first state and religion started here and you are illegally taking our land and suceeding to the KLA Terrorists who now have what they want. Just watch what happens when it comes to drug and people trafficing in Western Europe, you will have only yourselves to blame. |
| 22nd February 2006 Mendo | London - From: Happy 4th of July Very good blog Mr Hughes wow what a fantastic experience |
| 21st February 2006 Mark | Service Oriented - From: The Dog Days in Lviv Buying a train ticket is pretty bureaucratic but not super bad...but the trick is you really need to speak Ukrainian or Russian..if you only speak English you're pretty much scr**wed. |

| 24th January 2006 Vicky | Doppelganger siting - From: Time Stands Still and History Takes a Nap There's a guy who's started going to Starbucks in Norman who looks a lot like you, but without the turban. First time I saw him I was standing in line and turned around and there he was, and my face briefly really lit up. He must think I'm the friendliest person in the world. So--I forget--when are you returning stateside? |
| 20th January 2006 American Businessman | Albanian Food & Hospitality - From: Albania (What else do you need to say?) On travel this week in Prishtina, Kosovo, I have been impressed by the wonderful food and the hospitality of this 90% Albanian city--in particulary Restaurant Tifanij near downtown. Preparing to return home and wanting to share the expereince with my wife, I did a search for an Albanian restaurant in my home town (Washington, DC) which has every sort of ethnic restaurant imaginable and found none. Very sad, and surprising, to say the least. Albanian may be the most un-appreciated cuisine in Europe. |
| 31st December 2005 Mantas | - From: Welcome to the Baltics Glad u liked Lithuania;) "Thank You" in Lithuania is actually "Ačiū", or Achew, written in English. Take care, Mantas, Lithuania |

| 30th October 2005 Albanian Canadian | Funny - From: Albania (What else do you need to say?) I can't stop laughing at the ATM picture-joke. It's always interesting to see what outsiders have to say about your people and land. I am glad that you had a good experience in Albania. It makes me proud. Make sure to keep spreading the good words around. Obviously our northern neighbors keep poisoning the tourists with lies about Albania. Cheers, ITS http://www.digitalobjective.com |

| 16th September 2005 Erica | Glad to hear from you - From: "BLOW HORN!"--Greets from Delhi Hi Grant, I shared a lot of your experiences with Don over dinner tonight and he was just grinning from ear to ear, laughing, and inspired by your words. So gleeful that you are having this experience. You really are so gifted. "Some walk in the rain, and some just get wet" brought tears to my eyes and to your dad's, these are true words. And "Part of this experience is just attempting to take in the whole experience"--is a statement that sums up life rather well. Thanks so much Grant for this travel journal, it really means a lot to many people I am certain, as it does us. By the way another really good book written in India is "I Am That" by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj. According to Deepak Chopra, it is the most lucid, practical account of absolute self-realization since Patanjali--of 4,000 years ago, and much more relevant--as it was written in the 1980s. His yoga was "Nisarga Yoga" which means "Natural Yoga," the yoga of the mind in everyday life. If you are interested in finding out more about him you can google him I am sure. We eagerly await your next entry! Much Love from your dad and me. Erica PS Indian food is my favorite food, because of the variety within each meal. How is it different there? You are supposed to have "six tastes" with every meal--bitter, sweet, sour, pungent, salty, and mild. . . . Something like that, a Vedic diet. How is that applied there, in restaurants? I am curious. |
| 13th September 2005 Casey | - From: And this is Moscow Wow, The pictures are pretty breath-taking! I went to Deep Fork this evening and thought of the brunch we never had! Ah, you just owe me! Just playing... Travel well, but most importantly travel safe! Much love... |

| 15th August 2005 Corinne | wow - From: 'Roma'in Around Romania It seems that you are truly an active traveler and not a passive tourist. Your writing is inspirational. | 12th July 2005 JasonKessler | Great Read - From: Happy 4th of July Good blog Hugh-- looking forward to reading your upcomming entries. |
| 7th July 2005 Delphine | Interesting experience - From: Now I am really on the road I like the way you're talking about your trip through Balkans, it shows your inerest about the people of this countries so different from yours. Balkan's history is the most difficult of all the Old Continent because it's at the cross roads of all the formers empires and kingdom:Ottoman, Russia,Austria, Germany,Italy... Good luck to understand such a complex and rich history. If you succeed, you will know more about Europe than a lot of europeans. I wonder how will be your trip in Russia. Take care! |
| 7th July 2005 Patrick Lawrence | Kosovo - From: Happy 4th of July I think that this blog thing was really a way for you to just get back at me for leaving early. Really can you rub it in any more, "I've never seen so much pro-American sentiment", "everyone is so nice" , "People are buying me drinks" . Okay i get the picture, i should have stayed for a few more months. But on a more serious note, it sounds like Kosovo and Sofia were really something to see and I'm very interested in seeing your pictures from there. |
| 6th July 2005 Chris Berry | I jelous - From: Happy 4th of July It sounds like your have a blast over there... Keep the updates coming as it is a good reason to stop in the middle of the day, and think about something besides work. Enjoy! |
| 6th July 2005 Blair | Miss you! - From: Happy 4th of July Grant, wow your recent travels sound amazing! If you decide to head back toward Bulgaria I have a friend from the ship that his parents live in Sinemortitz, it is a small village off of the black sea, and he is visiting them this summer and you could so stay with them. Just thought I would offer it. Please keep the updates coming! Love, Blair |
| 6th July 2005 Vicky | What a world - From: Happy 4th of July It's quite a question -- In such a big world, when, where, and to what extent do we intervene? There's no way to get everyone's agreement on the answer. Good for you having this grand adventure. I really enjoy the posts. |
| 29th June 2005 anna | do you know h.c.andersen - From: The Manifesto He once wrote about all the young american students, who in the future would travel Europe in 8 days. They would see Coloseum, Acropolis, Spend a day in Paris and so on... And then believe they saw from where their ancestors came and understood what Europe is! I guess you proved him wrong. I'm amazed about your writting and it's interesting to follow your eyes. I hope you will have a wonderfull travel, and that we will keep in contact. Anna, Denmark |
| 19th June 2005 Jill Wise | checking in - From: Now I am really on the road Grant, I just wanted to let you know that I have enjoyed each and every one of your posts, and I look forward to the next and all of the adventures it will entail. Thanks so much for including me in your blog group. Safe traveling! Take care, Jill |
| 6th June 2005 anonymous | - From: The Unique Tastes of Slovenia Grant! You know how much I love horses!! I can't believe you actually ate a horse! That is sick and kinda sad :( Other than that sounds like you are having a blast. Can't wait for the next update! - Allison Wade |
| 15th March 2005 anonymous | - From: Playing in the Snow I was sitting up here in the newborn nursery checking my email while reading a magazine. I came to your email and, at the same time, an article about the first transexual "female" golfer to ever be allowed to play on the European Lady's Professional Tour. I chose to read the article first, which is a complement to your writing, because I always save the best for last. Ciao. - Breck |
| 15th March 2005 anonymous | keep it up - From: Playing in the Snow Hi Grant, I know my family has enjoyed reading about your exploits and will enjoy doing so going forward. I wish I was there to ski that powder with you...how funny that they don't like it and they have so much of it. Anyway keep up with the journals, it's very interesting to hear your take on everything. --Mark - Mark Thoma |
