South America » Chile June 13th 2010

South America: the food, the people, the music, the language, and the sheer size of the continent, when Charlotte and I merrily flew in from New Zealand (horrifically long flight and we managed to land before we had taken off… crazy!) we had no idea what to expect. I write this sitting in the hostel in Cartagena, Colombia; a fairy tale city of romance, colonialism and sheer beauty. The weather is balmy and sweaty and my feet are aching from exploring the cobbled streets of the Historical districts of El Centro. We have been in South America for over a month now and so far have journeyed up through four countries. There have been beautiful landscapes, delicious meals, a few too many hours spent on coachs and many a laugh on the way. Two has also ... read more

Kia Ora blog watchers and a big Hello from Santiago, Chile! After a long flight we have traveled back in time and continent hopped to the very rhythmical Chile; on the last, but very exciting leg of our world tour. We left the beautiful land of the Kiwi's, Aotearoa, 'Land of the Long White Cloud', also known as New Zealand to us English, on Tuesday after a lush month in a geographers paradise. NZ brought me many surprises, the sheer aesthetics of the landscape is a shock to the senses, the blissfully patriotic and friendly kiwis, the quirky small towns they call cities and Hiral and I's ability to face all fears and throw ourselves off/out of stuff. I know how lengthy my last blogs have been so I will try and keep this one to ... read more

Beautiful people, climbing Sydney Harbour Bridge, an amazing hostel and wine that tasted like ribena… read on to hear what our week in Sydney was like… After a crazy bus journey and a loooooong plane ride, Charlie and I descended on Sydney unaware of how expensive everything would be and how stylish everyone would look. The hostel we stayed in, ‘The Blue Parrott’ was brilliant. Really friendly and welcoming and as there were quite a few long-term residents it had a real community atmosphere. After a well needed wash when we arrived at about 11pm we both crawled straight into bed! The next morning, we rose like the sun and set off for a walk around Sydney. Morwenna, a friend from School, was also in Sydney at the same time so we formed a merry trio ... read more

Good evening and welcome to the third installment of Hiral and Charlie, dazed & confused, out but not down, rocking all over South East Asia blog. Right now you find us in Wheelers Hostel, Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur. There is not a fan in the place, it is sticky and raining and 9.59pm. Wheelers for a start is dumbfounding. Think dirty, think grotty, think an unsavoury block of flats in the Hackney area... Then, 2 floors up you enter the Twilight Zone, through the rabbit hole and bang into the he/she on the reception desk, surrounded by exotic false flowers, lanterns and an aquarium with a turtle. Our room is 'something to be desired' but at two pounds fifty pence at least we have a roof from the rain. We cannot believe we have now been away ... read more

Hello hello all; its my turn to tell the story of our trip so fresh from conquering the Thai Islands and Bangkok (again) Charlie and I, now left all alone thanks to the departure of our Denny daughter (miss you fran ) headed to Northern Thailand… After an overnight coach journey to Chiang Mai, Charlie and I were, as normal, dumped in the middle of nowhere at 5.30am and had to attempt to find our way to our hostel. Walking through Chiang Mai in the early morning light should have been an enlightening magical experience but with a heavy bag on my back and no sleep I was in no mood to appreciate the beauty. After an argument with a small Japanese man (I could have taken him) and four Germans (maybe not so much, they ... read more

Hello all & welcome to Charlie and Hiral's first travel blog! So it has been just over 2 weeks since Hiral and I waved goodbye to the green green grass of England and arrived bright eyed and bushy tailed in Bangkok. Since then we have experienced an incredible 2 week whirlwind around the South of Thailand, island hopping and sun worshipping. Right now you find me sat at the end of Kho San Road at quarter to 1am, the vibrancy of the street jostling by and a pretty interesting live cover of 'Sweet Home Alabama' filling my ears! Kho San Road is an extraordinary battle of sweaty bodies, taxis and neon signs fused with the sweet smell of mango and car fuel. It is like nowhere I have been before. Our journey from airport to central ... read more
