The day started early as we left the Sea of Galilee. Passing date palms along the road we stopped at the Kinneret Cemetary. Upon cemetary was located on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. It was filled with date palms, trees, flowers, and cobblestone paths along the graves. Our tour guide told us about the original Zionist settlers in what is modern day Israel. We were told about how they came to this land, developed the Hebrew language, drained the swamps, learned to defend themeselves, and lived hard and difficult lives. After leaving the Kinneret Cemetary we drove a little [View Full Entry]

Our tour awoke today to a beautiful and cloudless day. We enjoyed our stay at the Kinar Hotel which used to be on land that belonged to Syria. The hotel was situated on the Sea of Galilee which provides Israel with most of its freshwater supply. We started out today with a tour of the Golan Heights at Gadot Point. The bus drove along the twisting roads of the volcanic mountains that make up the Golan Heights. We arrived at the top of the Gadot Point which used to be a military lookout point, which looks right into Syria. The view [View Full Entry]

After a sleepless night in the Eden Hotel and our internal clocks messed up we began our tour. We started our journey in the small town of Zichron. After a short tour we drove further North to the city of Haifa where we toured the Holy site of Elijah's cave. Haifa is a beautiful city situated on the Medieterran Sea. While in Haifa we drove up Mount Carmel and viewed the beautiful Baihai Gardens and Temple for the Prophet named Bob. Finally we were given a chance to eat an authentic meal in the city of Acco. Air Travel in All its Glory My adventure started off at 6:30 am Saturday June 3rd. My first leg of the journey from Austin, TX to JFK airport was comfortable and enjoyable. I arrived at JFK at noon but I had to wait till 7:00 pm to meet my tour group and receive our tickets for our flight on El Al airlines. After receiving our tickets from our tour leader we then had to pass through El Al's customs and security screeners. The security personnel of El Al grilled my questions about why I wanted to go to Israel. Asked me [View Full Entry]

I think one of the most time consuming things to do for this trip is to pack for it. How do you travel for a month with one backpack and a daypack? I can't bring an outfit for each day but I can wash clothes along the way. I am traveling to three different countries and will be on the move alot so I can't take along lots of luggage. So after much debate I have decided what I am going to take with me and the verdict is not very much stuff at all. If I have to buy it [View Full Entry]

Welcome to the journal of Historian Herb and his traveling adventures. I am here in San Antonio (the home of the Alamo) preparing for my adventure. Gathering the items, clothes, and bags needed to travel to far off places. Two weeks from today I am going to embark on the biggest travel experience so far in my life. I am going to travel to Israel, Egypt, and Jordan from June 3rd to July 4th. I have been preparing for this trip since December 05 and my family, students, and coworkers are starting to get tired of me talking about my trip. [View Full Entry]
