Alicia Hinson My name is Alicia Hinson. I am married to Marlowe. We are both educators, and I enjoy my summers off! He is an administrator, so he doesn't really have summers off, but we try to pack in as much family fun as possible during the summer as we can, as he is incredibly busy the rest of the year. This summer, we are taking the trip we have talked about since we married in 1995. Marlowe's dad, Ron, was the youngest of 13 children. His oldest sister, Maida Hanchey, just celebrated her 91st birthday in Twin Falls, Idaho. She moved there many years ago, had 16 children and has raised quite a family there. We are traveling with our 3 children(Josie-11, Ty-9, and Jake - 7) to Idaho to visit the "Hanchey cousins" in a week. Right now, our plan is to leave early on Monday, June 22 and drive through the night to arrive in Idaho on Tuesday evening. We will visit the family through Friday night and leave Saturday morning. Our trip home will take about a week. I thought a "travel blog" would be fun. We'll see!!

We got up this morning in St. Louis, but we were moving slow! We made it to Memphis about lunchtime. WE had lunch outside by the river at the Welcome Center. There were some pretty cool statues inside the BB King Elvis Presley Welcome center; the kids thought it was neat. I threatened the boys within an inch of their lives when I read the sign that said, "Don't Touch! Alarm Protected" That's liike a flashing sign BEGGING them to touch!! Outside, there was a really cool egg given by the Stained Glass Society of Memphis or something like that. It [View Full Entry]

Well, this was ours. We decided not to "do St. Louis" as a stop along the way since we spent a day at Yellowstone. Little did I know that you have to go through St. Louis to get to Memphis, but oh well!! We got up this morning, and we headed out after another "complimentary hot breakfast" in the hotel. We have been pretty spoiled with nice hotels so far. We aren't staying in luxury 5-star, but we stayed in the Comfort Inn in Twin Falls, which was very nice, and then the last couple of nights, we stayed in [View Full Entry]

Well, we have seen a lot today! We got up this morning, and we headed toward Keystone, SD. Along the way, we decided to stop at the city of Deadwood. The whole city is a historic landmark. It's the town where Wild Bill Hickok was killed in Saloon 10. Today, I did something I never thought I'd hear myself say. I took my kids to a bar!! It's not QUITE as bad as it sounds, but it's close! They do a reenactment of Wild Bill's murder in the back of Saloon 10, so we had to go in to watch it. [View Full Entry]

When I spend a day somewhere like Yellowstone, I have to wonder how ANYONE can question that there is a god. That place is amazing! I never imagined what it would be like. There aren't enough pictures in the world to make anyone really grasp the beauty that it Yellowstone, but I sure tried!! We left Idaho Falls yesterday morning, as early as we could, but not insanely early, and headed to Yellowstone. We stopped in the town of West Yellowstone and rented the neatest thing! It was a GPS tour guide! For a one day trip in the park, it [View Full Entry]

Well, we are at the Hampton Inn in Idaho Falls tonight. We stopped to eat dinner, and decided we could not drive any further. It's amazing the amount of energy we have had when we were doing all that family stuff. It's like we are coming down off an incredible high, well, we kinda are!We just decided that it would be a good idea to come on to a hotel, chill out and go to bed early, so that we can hit Yellowstone tomorrow. It's 8:15 here, but we are in lights out mode! I didn't really tell you much about [View Full Entry]

We had an incredible time again last night! Another scene in my Truman Show - we went for a walk (which was WAY different than any I have ever walked, but ANYWAY!!). We saw two Hidden Lakes, and we ended up seeing 2 cliff jumpers!! I will have more time in a bit to go into detail about that amazing day, but for now, it's off to Aunt Maida's for goodbyes and the last of the 100,000 calories we've eaten this week! So, today, my sweet niece turned 4!! We were at another AMAZING breakfast, and I was telling the family that was there that I really wanted to hear them sing. They all insisted that they couldn't sing! Well, when I told them that today is Marlee's birthday, they agreed to call her and sing Happy Birthday. Well, since tomorrow is Shelly's bday, they sang to her too, and then they were on a roll, so they sang one more beautiful song for Shelly. We all wish she was here too. As I'm sure most of you can imagine, most of their [View Full Entry]

Have you seen the movie, The Truman Show? I have decided that is what is going on here. It seems impossible that things are really as they seem! The day we went to Shoshone Falls, the falls were at full capacity, which means they were as beautiful as they could get! The weather here has been rainier than it has ever been, but it has been perfect since we got here! Yesterday, we went to eat at Norm's Family Dining, which is the restaurant owned by Vicky, one of the "original 16," but I was wrong about what number she is. [View Full Entry]

Every time I think I won't be surprised anymore, I am surprised again. First of all, I realized that I left off something about the food in the last entry, which was kind of important, because of the title. When we were at Dierke's Lake, Cassia (Mona's daughter) came up with HOMEMADE Bear Claws!! They actually were some sort of donut twist covered in this amazing icing, and they were STILL WARM!! Oh my!! Loretta says she'll teach me to make them. I said absolutely NOT!! Those things alone are worth coming to Idaho for! A little bit about Aunt [View Full Entry]

They call this the Niagara Falls of the west!
Wow!! I think I can write a whole blog dedicated to the FOOD so far!! We got to Liz's house this morning. ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!! From her back patio, you can see for MILES!! Aunt Maida insisted that we have a "southern breakfast" today. Even though she is in the hospital, she had Ileta stop by so she could give her step by step instructions for making grits the way Grandma Hinson used to make! I've only ever known one other person to wash grits prior to cooking them, and that's Aunt Velva! We had the purest white creamy grits, along with [View Full Entry]
