Hello everybody! Two weeks ago we arrived in Sao Paulo. It's been really nice and quite exciting to be here. We live in the financial district, next to the World Trade Center (yes, Brazilians like to imitate the US wherever possible!), where my work is. Sometimes I am in the office, and sometimes I am going between construction sites in- or around Sao Paulo, meaning that I get to see a lot of the state AND hang out in a office with kick-ass view! Going to the construction sites has been a special experience. It is amazing how much security they have around these companies. All kinds of hi-tech stuff, fences, gates, and of course a lot of armed guards who take their work very seriously. Getting through this is by far more difficult than getting ... read more

Leaving Joinville

Hi Yesterday we left Joinville for Sao Paulo. I will then be working in SP for the remaining of my internship. A few words about the place I have been working in over the last few months. Joinville is a peaceful small city of about 500.000 inhabitants. It is in the southern part of Brazil where people are mainly of European decendant. In order to establish the control over this part of the country, people from Europe were invited to come here and settle down where they would get free land to farm, and the first wave of immigrants came to Joinville about 150 years ago from Germany. This is quite a qontrast to how the north got settled with large plantations run by slave-owners, this is today the richest area in the country and it´s ... read more

Hi all Last weekend we went to a theme park close to Joinville, called Beto Carrero World. On the way, in the bus, I don't think anyone was in doubt about where we were going, when we got closer and saw the buildings two of us started screaming hysterically "the palace! THE PALAAAAAAAAAACEE!!!!!" When we left the bus everyone was staring at us through the window. We did not know what excatly to expect, but it turned out to be great. The park is neatly designed with a lot of different themes going on. It is a combination of a theme park, ZOO and circus and one of the best parks I have gone to. Two rollercosters, water rollercoster, a train ride through the wild west where we saw gorillas, a pirate island, a free fall ... read more

Hæ everybody! Of course we had to go to Floripa with Johanna and the boys. Once again to Praia Joaquina. I had a birthday on the Friday, so there were a lot of gifts and a cake :) It was not as hot as the other times when we have been there, so instead of being on the beach the whole time, we went sand boarding. It is basically just like snowboarding, in the sand dunes next to the beach. Andri got the hang of it really quickly, and improved fast. Guðni surprised us a lot with how brave he was, he slided down the hills alone, and didn´t mind falling a few times. The grown-ups were not as impressive, we usually did not make it more than two meters before falling. We also had ... read more

Hi all! On May 18th, Johanna came with Andri and Guðni with her. We picked them up in Sao Paulo and went straight to Joinville. The boys were quite tired after a 40 hour trip from Iceland to London to Zurich to Brazil, but still happy to be here. Three days later, it was time to go to Rio again. We got a really good deal on a really nice apartment on Ipanema, just a few minutes walk to the beach. The schedule was quite relaxed, a mandatory daily trip to the beach, and one tourist activity per day. So, on three days we covered Pao de Azugar, the Jesus statue, and the girls went on a favella tour. All in all a great, great, trip! I must admit that I have totally fallen in love ... read more

This time the shit really hit the fan!!! I heard a story of three men, one French, one American and one Brazilian. They were flying over the world, but could not see what was underneath the clouds. After awhile, the American sticks his hand out the window and says: "We are now flying over New York!" "How do you know?" the others ask. "I just touched the Statue of Liberty" A little later, the Frenchman sticks his hand out the window and says: "We are now flying over Paris!" "How do you know?" the others ask. "I just touched the Effel tower." A little later, the Brazilian sticks his hand out the window and says: "We are now flying over Rio de Janeiro!" "How do you know?" the others ask. "Someone just stole my watch!" Rio ... read more

Hi We decided to go to Rio de Janeiro on the days 30.April - 5.Mai because Hemmi had a long weekend. We took the bus from Joinville on Wednesday evening and arrived in Rio at noon on Thursday. We took the bus straight to Copacabana where we found a cheap hostel near the beach and after checking in, we explored the city. Celebrating the first of may, Rio held a big concert on the beach of Copacabana and there were thousands of people there listening to Brazilian music and dancing. On the beach there were people walking around selling beer, snacks and candy so there was no need to actually leave your spot, they just came to you. Very convenient for tired travelers. We had the best maiscorn we’ve ever tasted. There is a person with ... read more

Hi I have a friend who is a big coffee enthusiast. She has studied coffee making and different kinds of coffee beans like no other. When I bought my first apartment she gave me her old coffee machine so she would not miss out on her coffee since I drink tea. I had heard that Brazil is the land of coffee beans so I decided to invite her over for a cup. She accepted the invitation and hopped over and stayed with me from 28.Mars to 13.April The first week we stayed in my hometown Joinville enjoying ourselves. Our motto became “shop till you drop” and we spent many hours in the mall either in shops or in the cakeshop. But that was not our only occupation, we regained our strenght by sunbathing and at resturants ... read more

Hi Our last day in Foz. We woke up and headed to a really nice bird park. They have a lot of different species of birds and stuff, everything from butterflies to eagles. They are in big bird houses, and some of them you can even enter and walk among the birds. Parrots in all colours and sizes, really curious and funny (and for some, a little scary). It took all of Rosa's courage to enter the macaw house, those very intelligent parrots are great entertainment! One even managed to sneak up behind Rosa and scare her (see photos). It is sad to know that some of the species have been driven to near-extinction by forest clearing and illegal hunting/capturing. I cannot in any way understand why someone would want to buy those animals on the ... read more

Hi everybody! So, day two at Foz. We headed for the national park early in the morning. Located on the Brazil/Argentina border, Iguazu Falls are considered to be the second largest in the world, only Victoria Falls are bigger. Most of the waterfalls are placed on the Argentinan side, but From the Brazilian side the view is supposed to be better. Anyways, with my precious "single entry" working visa, we decided not to go to the Argentinan side. When we came there we started by taking a ride through the jungle for a few kilometers, then a 600 meters "jungle hike" on a paved path down to the river. From there, a boat ride on a speedboat about 4 km up the river to the falls. This is really the way to experience the magnificent features ... read more
