5-22 Hotel: Sleep Inn International, Georgetown, Guyana, $65 Flight: Trinidad (POS) to Georgetown (GEO), Caribbean Airlines Woke up at 5 am, our flight wasn't until 7:45 but we wanted to be there a bit before (Our other Caribbean flights had actually been leaving early). There was noone in checkin line, and we went to have a breakfast of a muffin and juice. They started calling our flight, with nearly 2 hrs before departure! We went upstairs where there was a long line to pay departure tax. My passport had been stamped 'transit', so I didn't need to pay it! Still we were in the departure gate over an hour and a half before departure, yet they were already announcing boarding! We all boarded, then proceeded to sit on the ground for an hour! The plane ... read more

5-20 Hotel: Best Western South Plaza, Grand Anse, Grenada, $105 Flight: St Vincent (SVD) to Grenada (GND), LIAT The flight to Grenada was pretty quick; too bad it was at night as you could not see the Grenadines below. Scott got off the plane for a minute just to say he touched Grenada then got back on to continue to Trinidad, where I would be meeting them the next evening. I caught a cab (40EC) into Grand Anse town, there were many more tourists here than in St Vincent! It was already after 9PM when I had a quick dinner of Grenadian jerk pork which was quite spicy! There was a group of Venezuelans sitting at the table next to mine. Grenada (yes, the place Reagan invaded) was hit pretty hard by hurricane Ivan back ... read more

5-19 Hotel: Silverpoint Hotel, Barbados, $177 Flight: Austin (AUS) to Dallas (DFW), American Flight: Dallas (DFW) to Miami (MIA), American Flight: Miami (MIA) to Barbados (BGI), American It's been a bit of an adventure just getting here! We arrived at the airport early morning on Saturday to find our our original Austin-Atlanta flight was delayed, and Delta was rebooking people on alternative flights. After waiting 45 minutes in line, we finally had an itinerary to take over to American, where we found out Delta had given us an illegal connection time in San Juan. By the time we had sorted this out, it was too late for checkin with American, and not possible to make it to Antigua the same day. Since we had tickets from Barbados the next morning, I then asked if they ... read more

Middle East » Bahrain » Manama January 12th 2007

We spent three days in Bahrain on the way back from India. We left our Delhi hotel at 6:30 AM on Wednesday for the quick ride to the airport; traffic was nonexistent. However it was still quite cold and foggy and we hoped that our flight wouldn't be delayed. Checkin and security only took about 20 minutes; we then had over an hour to wait in the lounge. The Delhi airport was pretty basic once past security; I hadn't changed any of my rupees and there wasn't a bank. We plopped in the lounge for awhile, where someone had just grabbed the only computer. We soon boarded the Gulf Air flight to Bahrain; biz class was full with families. They served either an English breakfast or an Arabic breakfast with fuul and arabic bread. The flight ... read more

Asia » India » Andaman & Nicobar Islands January 9th 2007

We spent 5 days total in the Andaman Islands, 3 days on Havelock island. One of the beaches on Havelock was named the Best Beach in Asia a few years ago (pre-tsunami). I'd heard that the tsunami hadn't affected Havelock very much and the diving was excellent, so wanted to go check things out. January 5, 2007 Ferry: Port Blair to Havelock Hotel: Barefoot at Havelock An early start this morning to catch the ferry. The hotel charged us 100Rs for the very short ride down the hill (a tuk-tuk should have been 15-20Rs if that but there weren't any around). We got our ferry tickets to Havelock Island, which said Dr. & Mrs. Rajiv and boarded the Jolly Buoy Ferry. The full ferry held maybe 60 seated people, with only 5-6 foreigners onboard. The boat ... read more

Asia » India » Karnataka » Hampi December 17th 2006

After returning from Mysore, I only had about a half hour to change and repack before heading off to the Bangalore City train station for my trip to Hospet. I was expecting it to take 40-60 minutes to get there with Bangalore traffic, but the cab took a back road and it was only 20! So i had over an hour's wait at the train station. People were milling about everywhere, but most trains in India are quite well organized now. There is a computer reservation system with waitlist to prevent overbooking, and you can check where your status is online. I grabbed a quick masala dosa meal and waited for our train, which ended up leaving a half hour late. I had purchased AC1 tickets to Hospet the closest town to Hampi with rail service; ... read more

Bangalore so far has been Ok, but I haven't been able to see too much of it yet except the route between the downtown hotel and the office, which is out near the airport. It is only a few miles but it can take over a half hour to get there in Bangalore traffic, which is just incredible. Luckily there aren't any/many cows in Bangalore, but pretty much any other wheeled vehicle is on the streets, three lane roads become 5 or six vehicles wide. So many companies and people moved to Bangalore in a short period that its infrastructure is strained to the limit and power cuts are common (had 4 already this week). This has caused many companies to move to nearby Hyderabad. The weather there has more extremes, Bangalore is more like southern ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Central » Coimbra November 28th 2006

Just getting to Coimbra was a bit of an ordeal. Arriving at the Lisbon airport, I had to wait for 40 minutes for all the bags to come out before realizing mine wasn't going to come out. They had a take a number system for lost bags at the Lisbon airport, this must be a common occurrence! Grabbed a cab through the pouring rain to the Oriente train station, the cabbie was quite chatty and singing most of the way. Got to the train station to find the lower level flooded, and no trains running, no explanation. I went to the other side of the station where the bus vendors were and managed to get a bus ticket to Coimbra, leaving in an hour. Called my friend marco to find out, turns out he was on ... read more

Europe » Spain » Ceuta & Melilla » Melilla November 24th 2006

It's been a hectic few days. I'm on another of my whirlwind mad crazy trips, knocking out passport stamps by the dozen. Well, not quite a dozen, but will end up with 4 new ones. The main reason for this trip is to attend the OpenBSD hackathon in Coimbra, Portugal for 5 days. I've been working on the ACPI implementation for OpenBSD on and off for a year now; my friend Marco wanted me to go to the conference to meet some of the other openbsd geeks. Since I'd never been to Portugal before that was an easy answer. Since I was redeeming an award ticket, it gave me some extra flexibility in adding one or two other destinations. I've been attempting to get on the Traveler's Century Club list, they define a list of ~317 ... read more

South America » Paraguay » Encarnacion September 5th 2006

My overnight bus ride from Asuncion passed uneventfully. After signing off the internet cafe last night I wandered around the station to grab a bite before hopping on the bus. There were several places selling empanadas (food of the gods for long bus trips in south america). I bought two, ate them, then went back and bought two more :D. yummy stuff. The bus finally showed up, a big double decker deal with almost lie flat seats. The bus filled up pretty quickly and I slept most of the 5 hr trip to Encarnacion, we arrived just before 6 AM. It was freezing cold this morning and I wanted to get a quick start onto the Jesuit ruins which was the reason for my trip to Encarnacion. There are a dozen or so Jesuit missions in ... read more
