So, today we went to Greenwhich to see the sights in one of the most stunning areas of London. We started off with a walk around the Old Naval College, taking in the beautiful buildings and taking a good look at the Thames. We saw the Cutty Sark (currently being renovated after an accidental fire!) - an example of a merchant ship, the same kind that would have traded with the Canary Islands. We moved on to the Observatory. Personally this was incredibly interesting, as i study astrophysics, and we saw a camera oscura projecting an image of the Naval College. The meridian, which passes through the observatory, also passes through El Hierro, which i went to see a few months ago. Was a nicely poetic idea, following the meridian around the world! In the Maritime ... read more

Today we were treated to a day trip to Canterbury, Dover and Leed's Castle! Having never been on a coach tour before I had no idea what to expect - turns out it was a great experience, spoke to lots of people and learnt an awful lot about British history. Leed's Castle was like nothing we have in the Canaries - over 800 years old, it maintains its original features despite being rebuilt various times. We proceeded to Dover to have a look over the English Channel. We could just spy France, as it was a clear day, and it only looked as far away as La Gomera or one of the other islands. Later we went along to Canterbury, to go to the market and potter around the shops. Beautiful back roads and sweet shops ... read more

I was lucky enough to win a trip to London with some friends! These kind of things never happen to me - it's vaguely ironic that I won a trip to my home town but I'm having a brilliant time! Today we went on a bike tour of London. I really recommend it - i saw places I've never seen before in my life and I've lived there for 2 years! Particulaly enjoyed seeing Lincoln's Inn, the judicial district, which was a hidden haven. Will definitely be going back there when I have visitors in London! ... read more

WOMAD - world of music and dance - is definitely one of the best things i've been to during my time on the islands! It's an annual music festival which takes place in Las Palmas of Gran Canaria. There are other WOMAD festivals all over the world, including England where it was started by Peter Gabriel, but this one has got to be up there with the best! Totally free, great location, amazing music... we even managed to find some free accommodation with Couch Surfing. The day was super-family-friendly, a lovely atmosphere with people of all ages singing and dancing together. To top it off, the boat trip to and from the island was idylic! Beautiful sunshine and a boat-top swimming pool. Another mini-adventure in the Canary Islands! ... read more

If there's one thing I'll take away from my time on these islands, it's how to relax. I never really realised how stressful my life was back in london - I'm feeling much healthier, happier and carefree. Not quite sure how I'm going to reajust! The beaches in the Canary Islands are definitely some of the best bits; if you get outside the main tourist beaches they are full of locals, families and surfers. Totally worth staying out that bit later and watching the sunset too. Always find great little canarian tascas (restaurants) in the beach towns, have never tasted better fish in my life!! ... read more

So, to get a feel for the native culture, we went to watch the procession outside the Conception Church in La Laguna. It was an impressive event, hundreds of canarian people, huge floats and a warm family feeling. What I liked most was the fact that there were people of all ages watching and participating. Everybody took time off work and studying and came out onto the streets. Well worth seeing, if you get a chance! ... read more

For something completely different, some friends and I decided to take up scuba diving. Lukcily, the Canary Islands are the perfect location for beginners, so far we've seen innumerable fish, rays, octopi and sea turtles... and we've only been twice! My favourite spot was Puertito, which has a friendly colony of sea turtles. They came right up to us, incredibly inquisitive, and played with the bubbles from our oxygen tanks. You could even see the turtles when just going snorkelling, if you're lucky! ... read more

So, I've now been in the Canary Islands for four months and have fallen in love with the place! Having initially dismissed this beautiful Archipelago as a bit of a trashy tourist destination, I have had to completely rethink my opinion of the place! I am living in San Cristobal de La Laguna, a world heritage site and student town, and having the time of my life. So far I have spent my time trying to immerse myself in the incredibly rich canarian culture; learning salsa, joing a choir in my local community centre, taking a scuba diving cours... the list goes on! See my entries for details on what I've been up to and hopefull for some ideas for yourself! ... read more
