My hands were cuffed behind my back and my legs were shackled. Instead of giving me the key to the city for my daring feat, the evil backwater burg of Moline gave me a damned ticket.

| 27th June 2008 Ashley | The Atlanta Braves - From: What to do as a tourist in Atlanta My best team of MLB is The Atlanta Braves . This why I always fallow their games especially whenever I have some time. I’m always trying not o miss any of their game and hear about the team’s news. But The Atlanta Braves tickets get more pricy especially when there are some hot games. But, if we’re really good fans we should try not to be mean when we’re talking about a favourite teams. It’s not only the Braves tickets that got pricy, but there are other major teams too, so the team needs our support and we should provide as much as we can. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Its livestock includes sheep, yaks, pian niu (crossbreed of bulls and yaks) and horses. Qinghai produces large quantities of sheep wool, meat, leather and sausage casings for other parts of the country. It is an important producer of medicinal materials such as caterpillar fungus, antlers, musk and rhubarb. Qinghai Lake is famous for its scale less naked carp. The province grows spring wheat, highland barley, broad beans, potatoes and rapeseed.

| 29th November 2007 Richard | Not a Cessna! - From: The Last Spanish Virgin As a Caribbean pilot I can't let the "Cessna" remark go un-commented. The airplane you travelled in was actually an old British airplane, the Britten-Norman Islander. It is almost standard-issue in the Caribbean because it gets into the tiny restricted airports with few problems. Its joy to be in the Caribbean (even the northern parts! :) but even more of a joy to fly for a living in the Caribbean. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| 9th March 2007 halefg | Culebra is the place to be - From: The Last Spanish Virgin Joanie - I would highly recommend Culebra to visit on a budget and a 'real' Caribbean experience. That said, if your ideal anniversary is having a pampered accomodation in a high class resort (ie spas, drivers etc), your best bet is maybe St John in US Virgin Island or Bahamas, or Bermudas. Culebra is definitely a much slower pace place where you can have a beach by yourself, camping out by the shore for 10 bucks a night, and biking around the island in comfort. Simple roads with potholes, sleepy bars and restaurants with no set open hours, and not many cars. Not touristy, relatively not too expensive, especially if you bring your basic essentials and some food from mainland PR. Culebrenses still need to import many things from the mainland. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 9th March 2007 Joanie | Thinking about going - From: The Last Spanish Virgin My husband and I are looking for somewhere tropical to spend our 25th anniversary. We need somewhere affordable. | 3rd July 2006 rvk | nudity - - From: Città del Vaticano Nudity was only acceptable for deities (non-christian i.e. Venus, Mercury, etc. - fits in with the compunction of ancient Greeks to represent a studied and idealized human form - gods and goddesses were immortal and more perfect forms of humans but obviously needed to be visually represented as such). Nudity was also iconographically understood as "sin" during the Renaissance and in a few instances prior -. You will notice that the damned depictions of Last Judgments are always nude... During the Counter-Reformation the Catholic Church set forth a number of decrees about propriety and the depiction of saints - apparently it had gotten out of hand and in images such as Michelangelo's Last Judgment, the angels were seen to be represented as "buffoons" flying and contorting about, other images laid bare the Virgin Mary depicting her like a "harlot" (see original texts..) etc. so the Church in the Council of Trent had to re-address how religious images should be depicted and also address the intent of these types of images - they should move the viewer to humility and piety, not lust and/or laughter... so during the 16th century, the Church directed that fig leaves be painted over the nudity. Modern day restorers have recently undergone the debate over whether to restore the Last Judgment to its ORIGINAL state (without fig leaves) or to just clean it as the fig leaves also have become historical and are reflections of latter day historical events of cultural attitudes in the 16/17th century during the Counter-Reformation.... I too was surprised about Brown's claim - but he often does stretch ideas and plays very loosely with time periods. It is interesting to note that the genitals in the original statue of David was also covered by a gold chain belt and fig leaf as it stood in the Palazzo della Signoria in its early days - public nudity was an issue there as well...my art professor told us that - I think I did verify it somewhere but, these things can be difficult to locate when searching on your own... | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 23rd June 2006 anonymous | Photos - From: Only in the Deep South, Civil War Re-enactment We\'re using some old and new photos in a series of newspaper articles on the Civil War and would like to consider using some that you took at a 2005 re-enactment. Is this possible? We don\'t have much to offer because we\'ve never done this before, but we\'ll send you some copies of the paper when it\'s published in September. Also, we\'ll need the large file size JPG, not the smaller ones as found on your website. Thanks, Bill Fishburne | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 11th June 2006 Susan Bradley | Hi - From: Marathon … not, I dare you a 15k Ranger Run challenge and Blackhawk helicopters Hi again! Jon sent me the email, and I loved your blog about the day and your experience at the run. I am so proud of you for planning on the marathon......you will have a tough training in the summer heat and humidity, but I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT. I am so glad that you and Jon are friends. Being up here in the mountains of PA, I think of him often, and knowing that he has a quality, genuinely nice guy such as you as a buddy, makes me smile. Someday when you are a dad, you will know that your child is always just that.....no matter how old. So, go Halef......please let me know how things are going in your training efforts and send me a picture as you finish the marathon. | 17th May 2006 Reyna | The Great Castration - From: Città del Vaticano Recognizing this is a 'blog' and anyone can say anything, either Dan Brown is plagiarizing Haelfg or Haelfg is plagiarizing Dan Brown as the discussion on this page is not cited in either "Angels and Demons" or on this page by either author and is less paraphrased than actual verbatim in both works. My research into "The Great Castration" is revealing that a law published after Michelangelo's death requiring genitalia be covered on his "Last Judgement." While my research does not yet reveal why and when the statues' genitalia were covered, it seems to be leading down the path of Counter Reformation--the Catholic church's response to the Reformation when Protestants separated from Catholicism. If this time bracket is true, and further research reveals that statues were covered during this time (16th & 17th centuries, 1500's and 1600's, respectively), Pope Pius IX could not have possibly whacked the Willy's off the statues. This time frame is 292 and 192 years, respectively, before Pope Pius IX was born. Pope Pius IX was born in 1792 and died in 1878. Will add more FACTS when I have them--Reyna | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 10th May 2006 DC | Plot - From: Blackout I told you to watch out for those Gremlins in MouseLand. I hear there is a conspiracy between the Pluto and Mickey to capture all the royalties on pics in MouseLand so they released Gremlins to take over cameras and blackout pics. I am not even going to tell you the other conspiracy that Minnie has going on with the 7 Dwarfs but I hope you did not use any of the bathrooms in MouseLand… 1st May 2006 | halefg Experience - From: Città del Vaticano | Thanks for the comment. Of course I can't guarantee that the Great Castration happened for sure, but if you're looking at thousands of nude male statues inside the Vaticani Musei, you will wonder why they all resemble a same characteristic of having the genetalia whacked off and covered with fig leaf patches. I did not see any statues with their genitalias still intact. If Dan Brown indeed made lots of mistakes in quoting historical facts for DaVinci Code, including the Great Castration, for sure he has a good base and evidence for this event. 1st May 2006 | researcher the great castration - From: Città del Vaticano | Did the Great Castration actually happen? because the only proof i have is this site and the famous book by Dan Brown, and he made a lot of mistakes thank you for your time 15th April 2006 | Val NICE - From: All I want for Christmas is a real good tan | I spend very nice time reading this article. 25th February 2006 | John C. So just dont use this name to promote another company. Favela Tour is not a general name. Is a private name of a tour operator. Be a Local is another tour4 operator. we have nothing to do. Your texts lead to misconfusion. Marcelo Armstrong www.favelatour.com.br 5th February 2006 | bonnie Only in the U.S.A. - From: Only in the Deep South, Civil War Re-enactment | My husband and I attended the same re-enactment event in Conyers last November and really enjoyed it. You described it very accurately. So many of the participants we met had ancestors who fought in the Civil War, and were very willing to stop and talk to us about their ancestor's story. We had also attended a civil war re-enactment in northern Florida (Feb.) two years ago, where they had explosives pre-set in the ground. They shot cannons, and it would "appear" that the cannonball landed and exploded on the ground. VERY loud and realistic! I couldn't believe how thick the air was with all of the smoke from the cannons. It had been a very cold and drizzly day, which added to the entire effect. I liked the location up on the hillside of this Georgia re-enactment, as you could see everything occurring or developing right in front of you. As Canadians who travel quite a bit, we would definitely like to encourage other visitors to the U.S. to try and find a Civil War re-enactment to attend during their trip. It really helps to bring this very important part of American history alive. Apparently, some Americans think that war re-enactments are politically incorrect, but we saw them as honouring their ancestors and simply trying to bring an important time in American history alive to everyone. I certainly didn't see it as glorifying war in any way. To be honest, we are both REALLY glad that we visited the "South", as we had such a wonderful time. We definitely want to return for a longer stay. 17th January 2006 | marcelou2 Hola - From: On a magic chopper ride | Argentina's side or Brazil's side is the same nature, let´s see this point of view 8th January 2006 | ona iri!! - From: Buying some goodies in Paraguay | Hal,gue ikut hepi loe bisa ngalamin begitu banyak petualangan.Iri!!! Btw,foto-foto loe ga banyak ya.Ntar disangkain cuma ngarang dari Lonely Planet =) 5th January 2006 | halefg Foz do Iguacu - From: On a magic chopper ride | Erin: we stayed the first night in Argentine side (Puerto Iguazu), which is so much smaller than its Brazilian counterpart (we stayed there on our second day). We stayed in hotels both nights, which have competitive price due to its nature of competing for tourists. Foz has a better town feeling, so if I had to pick out of the two, I would stay in Foz. If you have two days, I would recommend exactly what we did - stay in Pto Iguazu for a night, to explore the Argentine side of the falls - then second night at Foz, exploring the Brazilian side of the falls. Good luck, if you have any other questions, please let me know. 5th January 2006 | Erin Nice Photos - From: On a magic chopper ride | Question - where did you stay? My Argentinian office mate says that you should try Las Lilas in Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires (close to downtown) one of the better steakhouses (expensive) in the city. Siga La Vaca is a less expensive steakhouse and is worth the money. Keep up the fun and keep the pictures coming. Later Bro! 15th December 2005 | Erin - From: Oklahoma! | aww what a cute picture of us! 26th November 2005 | halefg - From: The dark side of German history | Thanks for the clarification. 25th November 2005 | Truth in Advertising "Gas Chamber" at Dachau - From: The dark side of German history | I was a tourist at Dachau once too, and like you I believed I was walking in a real gas chamber and not merely a room to killing lice to stop the spread of typhus, the number one killer in the work camps. No one was "gassed" at Dachau according the Holocaust Memorial Council (see below). They also misled you by not telling you that the steel door on the chamber is a reproduction from a door at another camp, but that the Jews intentionally left off the inside door handle on the reproduction so as to further their deception about "gas chambers". January 28, 1998 Mr. Erich Brudehl 1068 Keentz Rd. Chehalis, Washington 98532 Dear Mr. Brudehl: This letter is in response to your query as to whether there were any working gas chambers in Dachau and if any people were gassed. The following is taken from the Encyclopedia of the Third Reich (New York: MacMillan, 1991) article on Dachau: "Dachau was not planned as an extermination camp; its prisoners were shot trying to escape or died of hunger, disease, and exhaustion, under torture or as victims of pseudoscientific experiments After the decision for the Final Solution, a crematorium, including a gas chamber - whose use, however, cannot be proved - was built in 1942. By November 1944, 3,225 physically and. mentally handicapped prisoners had been transferred to the euthanasia facility at Hartheim Castle and gassed." This is consistent with other accounts of Dachau by scholars. American troops did claim that people were gassed there, but after Dachau trials and historical study, the consensus seems to be that people were routinely executed in many incredibly cruel ways, but not gassed. Hope this helps and I would encourage you to do more research than I was able to do here with our limited staff and time. Although the good thing is you maintain youir connection with your roots. Jogging is good for the health. But most of all it keeps you away from homesickness. Anyway, I was also away from my family in Manila for 5 years as I ventured into the opprtunities America offers. And I worked most of the time to keep myself busy. How are the opprtunities in Europe? |
