NOW YOU HAVE TOUCHED THE SURFACE
Interesting to read your perceptions of Beijing as part of a tour group...touching the surface. Staying next to Jinshan Park would have been great. Maybe next time you can get under the surface...you'll be glad you did!

Indian Coffee House
The Indian Coffee House( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Coffee_House) is a restaurant chain , run by a co-operative society(Indian Coffee Workers Cooperative Society -http://www.indiancoffeehouse.com/).Their food is cheap and good usually. You had a tough time ordering there may be because they didn't understand what you said. Many of the keralites understand english but the problem is with the pronunciation. Our pronunciation is different from yours and so many a time we don't understand what you are saying. In an Indian coffee house there will be a 'menu board'( they don't have menu cards) in which the names of all the food items they serve, with their prices are displayed.(http://www.flickr.com/photos/mayankaustensoofi/3597433082/). You can go through it and then order the dishes. They usually don't serve any seafood. If you want seafood in kerala goto some good restaurant in Fort kochi or Varkala

Fish restaurant
If you want to eat fish while in alleppey don't ask for fish restaurants.Because 1)I don't think there is any restaurant exclusively for fish dishes. Also keralites(people of kerala) uses fish dishes only as a side dish for rice. 2)They usually call restaurants 'hotels'.So they may not understand what you meant. 3)There english pronunciation is different .So many a time they won't understand what you mean. So if you want fish ask about any 'hotel' where you get fish dish.In the native language malayalam 'meen' (its pronounced like mean)means fish and Alleppy is famous for karimeen (pearl spot) dishes like 'Karimeen pollichathu'.Google it If you want to know more about it.

mussels in kerala
There are not many spots in the villages in alleppey where you can find fish ,crab,or mussel dishes, even though you will see every one fishing and crabbing.Usually the mussels (or mussel dishes) are found in the village 'toddy shop'(local liquor shop) .They prepare it in a very hot and spicy manner and some times can cause the infamous 'deli belly'. That may be the reason why you were met with blank stares when you asked for it.

Good Blog
I like your descriptive blog Faith. Transports me to the place - I can almost smell the dust 'n spices. Interesting to hear about the changes that have taken place in India over a relatively short period of time.

Glad you and Micha have arrived safely. Other than being there I don't feel jealous so far. I am sure that will change as you get into your trip.

i still read your blog....every morning
Happy Birthday Faith. Big 50....you are now heading for old age like me. Even though I obviously look well worn I do not think I have been worn out and slowed down that much by age like oldies of previous generations. So you have many many good years still in front of you. Hope this holiday is every bit as exciting and interesting as you were anticipating. Enjoy the coffee and cakes today and I hope you both stay dry. Love to you both Russell

Hi
Get the feeling that Vietnam isn't quite as an exotic destination as you anticipated. That mandarin seems to be a well to do oldy. Well you seem to be doing lots. Sad about the food I am sure there should be far more than 5 dishes available there. Maybe next week will get better.

Wonderful!
Wonderful experience and wonderful blog. You know what? I'm now listening to Cat Stevens, thanks to your appreciation of his songs. The first time I've ever heard of him. And hope some day I will see the karsts, butterflies, rafts, etc, too.
