| 5th December 2005 Martha Jo Ruffcorn | Bangkok, Oriental - From: "Bangkok, Oriental setting What a wonderful article. Can't wait to visit there myself. |
| 16th October 2005 skp | Singapore - From: One Degree North Dear Glcarter, You write very well! The Esplanade is like two hedgehogs taking a nap. We locals call the two bubbles 'the durians', with their prickly round roofs. Skp |
| 8th October 2005 marg leo | End of Jouney - From: "Bangkok, Oriental setting Hi, Does not seem possible that you're on the final "leg" of 33,000 miles!! Don't forget to drop your Xmas letter to Santa as you travel over the North Pole. Be sure to call me on Cell phone from ORD. We will be at "Taste of Lexus" in Arlington Park this p.m. Love DAD |
| 8th October 2005 Pearce Weaver | Keep It Clean - From: "Bangkok, Oriental setting Kevin and Judy, as the author said; this is a family blog. Guess Judy actually has missed the old man. Another great descriptive entry for the journal. Can't match a little US hospitality when traveling. I will take you up on the details of the Bankok visit. Ruffcorns are calling the states tomorrow so we can get some of the scoop then. We are planning our Christmas ski vacation. The Weaver boys are already talking about it. If we can make it injury free we will consider it a success. Gary, looking forward to seeing you this weekend even if it is for a short visit while you get reacclimated. Our friends are coming in town this next week so you and Judy have to make plans to join us for one of Josette's feasts. Looking forward to reading about Oz. Take care. |
| 7th October 2005 Ruffcorn | Is that a snake in your pants? - From: "Bangkok, Oriental setting Judy cna probably confirm that Carter does have a snake in his pants!! |
| 4th October 2005 Judy | - From: One Degree North Well, Mr. Vertigo, did you take the bus back across? |
| 4th October 2005 Doris | - From: One Degree North Good thing it is late here! I read the blog from Singapore and actually laughed out loud thinking of you on the skylift. Now, I cannot stop chuckling, kind of the Saturday Nights All Right for Fighting laugh! Then to think of you singing I will survive, I lost it! Hence the reason I am glad it is late -- my family might have had me committed! I know you are in Sdydney now and hope you are enjoying yourself. South Haven was fabulous! Weather in mid-70's and clear/sunny skies! Talk to you over the weekend upon your return to the states! |
| 3rd October 2005 marg leo | Sydney - From: Pirates, Gherkins, and Singapore Girls Hi, I knew you would really like Sydney - you must be so busy since there has been no word from you! We had a very nice (but lively) weekend caring for Doris' three. Doris & Ron had fun in South Haven. Can you belive that tomorrow you will be enroute to your final destination before Houston? Stay safe and enjoy. Love DAD |
| 30th September 2005 Ruffcorn | Carter Bangkok Travels - From: Pirates, Gherkins, and Singapore Girls All I can say in response to Pearce’s query about whether Gary and I had any late night adventures in Bangkok is, “You don’t travel half-way around the world and then eat at McDonalds every night”. It’ll be interesting to see how Gary describes the sights, sounds, and smells of Bangkok. |
| 30th September 2005 Dorissa | - From: Pirates, Gherkins, and Singapore Girls Howdy! Well it happened! Sox officially won the division today! UGH! Sure isn't the same though, this town went crazy two years ago and today I asked a couple Sox fans and they were like "oh did they"??? That is a Sox fan though. Still weren't selling out even in the end! Going to South Haven for our get away weekend tomorrow! Cannot wait! Dad and Marguerite will be at my house with the kids! Hope Sydney is treating you well! |
| 29th September 2005 Rob Oberg | Guess Who Just Clinched The Central? - From: Pirates, Gherkins, and Singapore Girls Had to leave you a quick comment to let you know the Sox clinched the Central today (finally....). You should be happy to hear that the Astros are likely to get the wildcard, though not quite a Cubs October this year. I've got tickets for the third home game in the playoffs.... if that happens. Don't drink the water and avoid ice cubes. |
| 29th September 2005 Pearce Weaver | Catching Up - From: Pirates, Gherkins, and Singapore Girls Been a while since I could get back on. As you know we were spared the worst. Rolling black outs now with 100 degree temps. No holiday. Great reading on your travels to Bankok. Glad to see that the Ruffcorn's extended their typical welcoming hospitality. Can't wait to hear the details of the sights etc. in Bankok. Did you and Kevin have any late night adventures? Have to throw one Illini jab. Nice game against MSU. I think they may have won the coin toss. Could be a long sporting season for IU and UNC. I know you didn't want any Buddha jokes however they did come to mind viewing the pic. with Nick and Matt. Guess you have given up exercise and salads on your trip. We have some work to do when you return. Travel Safe. We miss your smiling face. Need some good laughs with the BS at HA. You could not have picked a better time to leave. |
| 28th September 2005 Jacklyn Buchner | Singapore - From: Quick Update Gary, Carl and I have enjoyed your trip through your comments. If you had said that Singapore reminded you of Miami, Minneapolis and SEATTLE, I might have to visit there. We just got back from Seattle and a short visit to the San Juans. Nothing to compare to your adventures, but it was beautiful. Have a great last week and a safe trip home. We will see you next month (that is if the Ilini and Bears are still pulling you back to Illinois) |
| 28th September 2005 Bronco | Food and Lake Alatoona - From: Pirates, Gherkins, and Singapore Girls Garo: Spoke to Derf today. He was wondering if they have good Chinese food in Singapore. I'm not going to answer that! Here's an odd thought (imagine that), do you remember when we tricked you into jumping into the bubbles in the lake near the damn and it was FREEZING?! That was a riot. Just wanted to make you laugh half way 'round the world! |
| 28th September 2005 Ruffcorn | SQ - From: Pirates, Gherkins, and Singapore Girls We flew SQ during the relocation to Bangkok and I agree with all your comments - although I think the FAs are still called stewardesses on SQ. I swear they had memorized my name two minutes after boarding the plane. Shortly after boarding, I leaned over to Matt and said the flight attendants were pretty. Matt looked at me like I was a dumb-a## and said, “Dad, they’re hot”. Nothing like having a fifth-grader point out the obvious. Maybe the US airlines should bring back the restrictions - might help them come out of bankruptcy. |
| 27th September 2005 Jon Heath | Don't buy me a pair either - From: Pirates, Gherkins, and Singapore Girls Skip the Oakley's for me. I just bought a pair of prescription sunglasses about 3 years after losing my last pair. I think I lost them within 2 months, and I really was very diligent about caring for them. Nuts! Keep up the good work. - Jon |
| 27th September 2005 marg leo | St. Paul's - From: Pirates, Gherkins, and Singapore Girls Hi, Enjoyed the updated blog. Need one clarification - St. Paul's was hit during WWII. I was there in 1949 and part of the roof was still open, You're correct - St. Paul's Just being there and surviving meant so much to the Brits at that time (and to the Yanks who were stationed there). Love DAD |
| 27th September 2005 Ruffcorn | Apology - From: Quick Update I know many of you look forward to Gary’s blog updates as much as I do. Therefore, I apologize as Lori and I have kept him extremely busy in Bangkok and this has prevented him from blogging as much as he would like. Hopefully he can submit updates on his 10-hour flight from Bangkok to Sydney. |
| 26th September 2005 Mike Buchner | Back to Normal - From: Quick Update Lest we get too excited about the improving fortunes of our favorite football teams, both the Illini and the Bears came thundering back to earth this past weekend. The Illini got spanked by Michigan State 61-14 on Saturday and the game wasn't as close as the score indicated. (Does FireRonZook.com still exist?) And the Bears didn't fare much better with a high school offense that produced 5 interceptions for the opposing Bengals and a feeble defense that gave up one big play after another. Very frustrating. Very typical. Hurry back so you can share my misery. P.S. Glad to hear everyone is okay in the Woodlands post Hurricane Rita. |
| 26th September 2005 Jude-a-Rita | - From: Quick Update Hey!! Where's the Buddah??? |
| 26th September 2005 Marg | Buchner - From: Quick Update Gary, In case you are getting homesick for the sport highlights Mike has watched football all day Saturday and today. Isn't good to know that some things never change! Good to hear everyone in Houston is okay and you are doing well. |
| 24th September 2005 Tracy | Anti-climatic - From: Rita I actually slept through Rita. She proved to be a non-event (thank goodness). The highlight of the storm was watching a mother squirrel scamper down a tree to rescue her baby that fell from her nest. She rolled her "hamster size" youngster into a ball, placed her gingerly in her mouth, and ran back up the tree. Sigh. . .all was right again in the world. As for your travels, I've lost track of your whereabouts, but am thinking you've left Singapore by now. Will anxiously await stories and pictures from that part of your journey. Stay safe and enjoy! |
| 24th September 2005 marg leo | Woodlands - From: Rita Hi, Appears Rita has spared The Woodlands from the really bad stuff. Kudos to Judy and her outstanding ability to handle these situations. Knowing that Pearce, his wife and family were there for support and help made me feel so much better. I will now accept the fact that NC beat Illinois! I am sure the Bullock family must be equally as nice. Take care and get some rest in Bangkok! Love DAD |
| 22nd September 2005 Gordo | Smelly Smells - From: If London Bores You I'd just like to add that it's interesting that Doris mentions Gary and "smelly smells" in the same message. Coincidence?! I think not... Wish I could join you in a Pub or two - take care! |
| 22nd September 2005 Aunt Evie | - From: Rita No wonder she's calm... She has Beanie Weanies! |
| 21st September 2005 tony | A what? - From: Goodbye to Scotland What's a Wynd? I don't get it? It must be some sort of curvy, winding road? I'll ask Dan and John.... |
| 21st September 2005 Doris | - From: If London Bores You Yes! Your memories and nose seem to be working smashingly! Mom used vinegar for a variety of things. Laundry to take out the smelly smells and to whiten things up! But she would also set it out at night to take odor out of the air! Dad made mention of your calls in route, however couldn't get to much detail because it was Jim's birthday and we had made him wait to open presents, it was 8:30 p.m., he was antsy! Had to cut dad off! Will call this a.m. Love you and stay safe! |
| 21st September 2005 Ki | - From: If London Bores You Bloody Mary's have got vodka, worcestershire sauce (dash) and tomato juice in them. Virgin Mary's don't have the vodka. maybe the tomato juice was off! worcestershire sauce is a little spicy and could be why it tasted a bit of vinegar... |
| 21st September 2005 Judy | - From: If London Bores You It was a perfect Gary day. And when will you publish your coffee table book "Gary's Parade of London Pubs?" |
| 20th September 2005 Julie Guebert | from your personal trainer - From: If London Bores You Gary, I'm wondering if you're drinking LOTS of water? hee hee. sounds like you are having fun. You write like you talk! Night Night |
| 20th September 2005 marg leo | In Flight - From: Goodbye to Scotland Hi, Don't neglect to relate your thoughts as you fly over various parts of the world enroute to Singapore - I have really enjoyed your emails - include them in your Blog, as well. You should be near Singapore as I write this. Was that Mary Fran who blistered you a bit? DAD |
| 20th September 2005 Gordo | Get that guy on the Bridge!! - From: St. Andrews!! The only thing better than that picture would be to see the police, in those funny tall hats with their clubs drawn, running up in the background to chase you off!! Great stuff Gary. Oh, I've seen some of your destinations but, is NJ on the agenda?? |
| 20th September 2005 sis | - From: Wandering East Berlin am i not supposed to know gershwin? please..i saw the houston symphony do an american in paris.. who's the one watching espn in one of the greatest cities in the world? hm? hi daddy. you sound like you're having fun. |
| 19th September 2005 Faye | Great Blog.... - From: Goodbye to Scotland Glad to hear that your trip is going well. Enjoyed the pictures and your stories. We should compare notes when you get back. |
| 19th September 2005 Pearce Weaver | Staying Connected - From: Goodbye to Scotland Temps are rising in Houston. Records expected this week. Time of year even us die hards begin to tire of the heat and humidity. Love the latest pictures. Very interesting especially with your commentary. Lots of football surprises this weekend. Biggest not shown on the Web. Danny's team playing coaches archrival and Pres of the SCFL. In short 15 penalties us 1 them. Three times refs added time to the clock in the last 2:20. Buzzer goes off on last play Rams win 12 - 7. Ref calls us back and puts 1 second back on clock. Ravens run it in from 20. Rams lose 13 - 12. Kids were devastated. Will have to show you film when you return. Back to the grind but only working 4 this week. B-day on Friday. Our good friends from Va coming in town. Did you hear the latest on Chris? Lump in the neck. Results on Tuesday. Praying it is reactive tissue. Keep the prayers going. Take car. |
| 18th September 2005 Linda Cushman! | Wowie Kazowie! - From: Goodbye to Scotland Gary you are doing an absolutely amazing job taking us through your travels. It is so much fun and the pics are great and you are extremely literate! And all this time I thought you were just a pretty face and a buff body. Keep up the good work--we miss you and stay safe but not sober! |
| 18th September 2005 Tracy | What a Journey! - From: Goodbye to Scotland Your trip, thus far, sounds and looks spectacular!Kudos on the photography; I'm very impressed. Scotland is now on my list of places I want to visit. For a girl who wanted to grow up to be a princess, the idea of a castle, atop a butte, overlooking a beautiful countryside, is quite appealing :-) Life here is status quo. Tuesday is looming just around the corner. . . Part of me can't wait to get the results; the rest of me is just frightened. By the way, thank you for thinking about Chris while on vacation - very touching! Continue having fun and staying safe. Twanies misses you (as does your gaggle of women friends). |
| 18th September 2005 marg leo | Pictures - From: Goodbye to Scotland Hi, You are taking really great pictures. Did Judy teach you how to use the camera before you left? I cannot remember you being a "picture taker"!! Continue to have a great time. I hope you gave my best to Duncan and Iza (and, of course, Bill and Muriel). Love DAD |
| 16th September 2005 Doris | - From: St. Andrews!! Very cool pictures at St. Andrews! Cubs won again today against the Cards! Have beat the Cards 9 times this year, so far! Going to the game tomorrow! Keep up the writings, we all love every one! Jimmy was even telling someone in our car pool about Uncle Gary in Scotland! Love ya! |
| 16th September 2005 tony | - From: St. Andrews!! Nice picture on the bridge...but where are your clubs? And what did you shoot? |
| 16th September 2005 Pearce Weaver | The Memories - From: St. Andrews!! Got a picture on the same bridge. Coming up 18th with my best friends from Asheville. Couldn't get any better. I am so envious. Agree with Kevin that we are living through your experiences. Cubs are toast. Astros hanging on. I expect great stories from both you and Kevin when you get to Bankok. 11:30 cst. Becoming the norm rather than the exception. Crazy. Take care. |
| 16th September 2005 Jon Heath | Swilkin Bridge Pic Very Cool - From: St. Andrews!! No other words necessary |
| 15th September 2005 Judy | Excellent photos! - From: St. Andrews!! If you like, I can photoshop Jack Nicklaus onto the bridge with you! |
| 15th September 2005 Evie | Minkeys! Minkeys! - From: Please Read Tomorrow Do they have a flag? |
| 15th September 2005 Ruffcorn | - From: September 11 (and 12) in Germany Gary - You need to keep your comments up to date as it's the first thing I look at when I get to the office - it's always disappointing when there is nothing new since I'm living vicariously through you. As to your desire for the Bangkok foot massage, typical one lasts about 90 minutes and costs around 150 baht - that’s about 3.60 in greenbacks. It’s almost criminally low so we usually tip very large and give them $5. Finally, I think Cubs are toast - you should transfer your allegiance to the White Sox. See you when you get to Bangkok. |
| 14th September 2005 Tony | Don't be a weenie - From: Please Read Tomorrow Technical issues? Ha! Figure it out and get posting. It is already 4pm EST on 9/14. |
| 14th September 2005 Judy | ??? - From: Please Read Tomorrow With a Kennedy in the background! Coincidence???????? |
| 12th September 2005 Nick Mattar | "movenpick" - From: Wandering East Berlin It's so lovely to know that you're still thinking of me even when the other end of the world is entertaining you. |
| 11th September 2005 Doris | Go Cubbies - From: Wandering East Berlin Cubs Win! 8-2 road trip. A little too late though! Sounds like you are having a spectacular trip. Johnny scored three goals again today in soccer! He is now at 14 goals in 6 games! Look forward to your writings everyday! Might be the closest I ever get to Europe! |
| 11th September 2005 marg leo | Berlin tour - From: Wandering East Berlin Hi, Interesting. Pictures turned out very good. Stupit Bears lost but Redskins could not score a touchdown. Score 9-7. Love, DAD |
| 9th September 2005 Dad | Berlin - From: A Fat Tom Hanks Hi, Sounds like a fabulous beginning to your jouney. Hope the pictures improve! Leave some fun for us - we're doing Prague, Budapest and Vienna in April, 2006. Is it a mistake not to include Berlin? Love, Dad/Marguerite |
| 9th September 2005 Doris/Sister | Wow! - From: A Fat Tom Hanks Hey! Hope all is well! Hanks maybe, how about Letterman? His actions remind me of you! Now that you have had your chuckle for the day . . . Cubbies won again last night Cubs 5/SF 3! Got you a shirt from concert -- will send so it is home when you get home! Blue Opals from Australia are always nice! Love and Stay Safe |
| 9th September 2005 Jon Heath | Sie Schreiben sind gerade fein, Herr Carter. - From: Mitte Indeed Your writing it just fine, Mr. Carter. (Translation of the title) Tell Booty to boot. Your blog will provide us with interest and sagacity. What a wonderful experience this will be. I hope I can enjoy the journey vicarioulsy. Perhaps, when you return, you can regale us with your unwritten tales as well. Jon |
| 8th September 2005 tracy | Mr. Debonaire - From: A Fat Tom Hanks Tom Hanks you're not . . .he has more hair and more money; but you do clean up nicely :) Enjoy your "first class" trip around the world . . .AND bring back presents! |
| 8th September 2005 Judy | Have a good flight! - From: A Fat Tom Hanks And if you edited the picture, perhaps you could have added hair! |
