Man let me tell ya’ll, I’ve been kickin it. So far Suzanne and I have been able to see and do a lot. Now I’m not doing it like P. Diddy but I am having a grand time all the same. On average we do something every weekend. The following entry is a typical weekend here for us. The weekend mostly starts off on Wednesdays. Wednesday night is probably one of the best nights to go out here in GTO. The best things about Wednesday nights are the bar promotions. Almost every bar here has the usual 2x30 beers ($1.50 brews) but some of the better drinking spots have even better deals. Suzanne, myself, and two of our friends went to La Juanita to “get right” and get the night rolling. This bar is real chill ... read more
Whats da deal y’all? I took a little break from the blog, but now I’m back with another insightful tale. In my time here in Guanajuanto I have seen a number of wonderful, interesting, funny and down right unexplainable things. The folks here are for the most part extremely nice and just a pleasure to be around, but it is the few that I have met or seen that are the inspiration behind this entry. To set the tone I’ll talk about my interaction with other Americans. Everyday it seems I see some guy or girl that just oozes “I’m from the U.S.A.”. The usual tell-tell signs are a big ass camera, very bad Spanish, their clothes and the fact they don’t speak when spoken to. I also came to the realization that a large majority ... read more
Well it is now 2006 so let me start off by saying that I hope all reading this will be blessed beyond degree this year. With that said let me tell you how we brought the New Year in. Suzanne and I returned to GTO on the 28th of December after spending Christmas season with our family in Indy and Ohio. Now the original plan was to spend New Year’s Eve in Puerto Vallarta or La Manzanilla, both of which are located on the Pacific Coast side of Mexico. The temperature in this region is like 83-90 degrees in December, beautiful white sand beaches, and baby blue water. So to make this a good time I went to a travel agent to make our hotel and travel accommodations. Well I had no idea how popular this ... read more
Que Onda? Mexico is still going great and this next segment is about my recent trip to Guadalajara. The city of Guadalajara is huge there are some 7 million folks there with malls, cars, clubs, fast food, pimps, bums, and stoplights just like any big U.S. city. Guadalajara is home to Tequila and Mariachi music. We traveled by bus, which is the easiest way to travel here in México. The bus tickets only ran $23 each and the ride itself was only 4 hours from Guanajuanto. In addition to the ride being cheap, it included a small sack lunch and they showed movies (Man on Fire and Spiderman 2) Once in the city of Guadalajara, I instantly felt at home, well with the exception that we were like the only black people and everyone spoke Spanish, ... read more
We went to our second wrestling match the other night here in Guanajuanto. Now since my first experience was so cool and the fact that I was dying to wear my mask in public without ridicule, I was super eager to go see this match. Me, Suzanne, Three of my teachers from school, and one other student made the trip to the outskirts of town to check it out. (Now before I go on I must say that to me these wrestling masks are the best things since sliced bread. I probably put one on everyday and flex in the mirror or just run around the house and act wild. I think that this is probably the only place in the world where I can wear a mask 365 day a year and it seem normal. ... read more
One of my many daily agenda items is to go to the store. It seems that no matter what my day involves me getting something Fresh fruit, candy, meat, bread, soap. The good thing about going to the store is that it allows me to get out practice my Spanish and interact with folks. The bad thing is that there is only one major super market in Guanajuanto, and it just so happens to be like 2.5 miles away. Now that isn’t all that bad going, but coming back with bags and walking up hill is a real bitch. In between La Commercial (that is the super market) and our apartment there are like a dozen stores and two open air markets but like stores everywhere one has one thing while not having like the other ... read more
On Sunday I met up with four of my schoolmates (I’m taking Spanish classes if you didn’t know) for what I though was going to be guided bus tour of the hills surrounding Guanajuanto. Instead it was the five of us (Lynn, Margaret, Natasha, Meredith, and me) on a friendly little hike. So off we ago up the road and heading up the hill. Now let me clarify these are really big rocky hills, only 800ft or so of being classified as mountains. It was a beautiful day so I thought why not. And so the five of us walked for 40 minutes, to where the road turned to dirt and the town below looked like colorful Monopoly pieces and we were just getting started. Lynn, who is a Canadian Nurse, had been up the trail ... read more
Every magazine, news station and newspaper has a fashion segment; well my blog is no different. Since I have been in Guanajaunto I’ve noticed a great range of clothing styles among the folks here. As I stated in my first entry, Guanajaunto is very similar to the US, but it is the little things that make it very interesting. To be 100% honest I didn’t expect people to dress as stylish as they do, seeing how there isn’t a major clothing store or mall anywhere close (Léon is the closest and it is 45 mile away). I’ve seen folks rockin everything from FUBU to Calvin Klein. The thing that is funny is that with all the modern stuff and not so modern stuff. But one thing here is universal Acid wash is still king. That is ... read more
Como Estas Amigos! I thought it be cool to document my adventures/experiences while here in Guanajaunto. And just so you know this won’t be a BS type blog where all I do is whine about how different México is from the US, no sir, this me keeping it 100% real. Also each entry will done is the Seinfeld style of simple name (ex. the city, the jeans, you get the idea). So without further adolet the show begin. First a little background on Guanajaunto. Guanajaunto is located smack in the middle of México and is one of 31 states in México. Guanajaunto, Guanajaunto is where I am (the Capital of the state of Guanajaunto is Guanajaunto). This city was originally founded for mining silver, Guanajaunto means land of the frogs (though I have seen more dogs ... read more
