Keep updated on my year in Singapore and who knows where else!! :)

And just so you know, between all this travel and exciting adventures I am also attending class... so try not to get mad if these are haphazardly written or take a while... I blame school for getting in the way of my blogging about my adventures. ;)

March 21st 2012

After living in Singapore for 7 months, my parents and one of my brothers decided to make the trek around the world to visit me and see where I've been living! And, of course, while they were here we had to go on a trip, and where better than Siem Reip in Cambodia to see Angkor Wat! Travelling with my family was a different experience that travelling with fellow students... we stayed in a HOTEL instead of a HOSTEL! The luxury! We also had a tour of Angkor on our first day, which was a great experience! Our tour guide was a professional photographer, so in the process of seeing the site we also learned a lot about photography, which was a great bonus! We were in Cambodia for 3 days and spent one day in ... read more

Full Moon Part-ay!

March 12th 2012

The Full Moon Party is the destination of many young backpackers in South East Asia, and I am no exception! Going into this weekend I knew that it wasn't going to be a culturally enriching experience, but more of a fun and relaxed escape from the stresses of university life! And, well, it didn't disappoint! We arrived in Koh Phangan on Wednesday after a circuitous route (Singapore - KL, change airports, KL - Samui, ferry to Phangan), but it was worth it. We stayed in a basic hostel filled with lovely individuals and had a low-key (well, as low key as Full Moon can be) weekend full of sun, sand and parties! Wednesday to Sunday was the perfect length, and I can happily tick that one off the bucket list! :)... read more

Vietnam from Top to Bottom!

February 26th 2012

Vietnam was one of my favorite places that I've been to so far this year, and likely its because I saw so much while I was there! I was in the country for 7 days, but I went to enough places that I felt as thought I'd been travelling for a month by the time I got back to Singapore! I flew into Hanoi from Singapore directly and started the trip with a bang as we headed directly to the train station to hop on the night train heading to Sapa! One thing I didn't expect, NORTH VIETNAM IS COLD! Like needed to borrow a winter down coat cold. Brutal. But minus the bone-chilling temperatures Sapa was incredible. We arrived just before the crack of dawn and got on a bus to take up into Sapa. ... read more

Jan 19th-23rd: Melaka (Malacca), Malaysia Jan 23rd was Chinese New Years, and so (given the extra days off class) I decided to go to Malacca. Malacca is only a few hours bus ride from Singapore and is most well known for having pirates. Overall Malacca is a small town with a fairly large China town and little India. Most of our trip was spend wandering around during the day and going to night markets. Sunday night was Chinese New Year, and the streets were full of people celebrating. It was a nice relaxing trip, other than our umm.. "questionable" hostel, and was a nice break before the start of a busy semester!... read more

Jan 8th - 10th: Kathmandu, Nepal Kathmandu is the largest city in Nepal, and you can really tell. Compared to Chitwan and Pokhara, Kathmandu is crowded, busy, dirty - but also really amazing in itself. We spent most of our time here just wandering around and taking in the city and eating (a common theme). Kathmandu was really interesting - its the closest city to Mt. Everest, which meant that it was a major tourist hub - basecamp is now on my bucket list. Kathmandu, and all of Nepal, is known for having some of the nicest people in the world - and it was true!... read more

Jan 5th-8th: Pokhara, Nepal Pokhara, Nepal is exactly what I imagined Nepal to be... mountains, lakes, hippies who've come to do base camp! It was great. We spent a longer time here because we spent two days and one night in Sarangkot! It was pretty spectacular - there we watched the sun rise over the Annapurna Himalayas, which was incredible. The rest of the time was spent wandering around, seeing sites like Devi's Falls, hanging out by the lake and shopping and eating... overall a great time.... read more

Jan 3rd - 5th: Chitwan Chitwan, Nepal was nothing like how I imagined Nepal would be... When I thought of Nepal all I could picture was mountains - and Chitwan is nothing like that... but it was amazing. We had a packed 3 days that included boat safaris, jungle walks, elephant safaris, bird walks and visits to elephant breeding centres. It was amazing. On the boat safari we went directly over crocodiles in a tiny dug-out canoe and the Elephant Breeding Centre is the second largest in the world! The weirdest thing about Chitwan... finding out the elephants are actually very dangerous creatures... and that there are flat grass land areas in Nepal - who would'a thought?... read more

Dec 29th - Jan 2nd: Bangkok! Where else in SE Asia would you spend New Years other than Bangkok? The city is known for being a ridiculous party, however, its not always what your looking for... But I can tell you, it is exactly what you want on New Years! I arrived and met up with a bunch of people on the 29th of Dec and had a general look around Bangkok. Let me tell you, the street food is amazing... I'm drooling just thinking about it... The 31st came quickly and we somehow got ourselves interviewed on TV, photographed for the newspaper and into this party on the top floor on one of the tallest buildings in Bangkok (... did I mention it was only half built?...). Overall, New Years was a huge success, and ... read more

December 12th 2011

Dec 5th - 10th, 2011: Hong Kong! Hong Kong was the first stop on my whirl wind of trip throughout December - and I must say was definantly a highlight! It was a busy trip, full of sight seeing (buddahs), shopping (ladies market!), eating (can you say dim-sum, street food, and the BEST (and cheapest) Michelin Star resturant), and just wandering the city. The week began with a visit to the light show on the water - which was made even more extreme by the Christmas lights that decorated all the buildings along with the regular ones that flashed and danced to music! Big Buddah and Ten Thousand Buddahs were definant highlights of the week due to the extreme nature of both locations! We travelled around some of the islands, visited old fishing villages and ate ... read more

November 20th 2011

Classes have just wrapped up and my exams don't begin until the 26th and so... A trip to the Philippines was defiantly in order! This trip mainly consisted of chilling out in order to be ready for intense studying and exams in the weeks to come! So due to this, Cebu Island in the Philippines was the perfect location. Cebu is not nearly as busy an airport as Manila, however, it has just become a destination for discount airlines (like Tiger) and so it is beginning to get more touristy! Me and two friends flew into Cebu on Monday morning, took a taxi to Cebu City south bus station, caught a public bus to Moalboal and then took a rickshaw to our hostel (Moalboal Backpackers Hostel). The journey took a while, but it was worth it ... read more
