So look at them! I posted new Athens pictures, added pictures to both Vienna postings, and added a Prague posting. Due to computer difficulties, it took me about 4 hours to do all of that. Yikes!... read more

We took a taxi from the train station to the hostel, and it turned out to be a wise decision. Our directions were from the main station, but our driver informed us that we didn't enter the city through the main station. The taxi driver was both funny and kind, and a great introduction to this wonderful city. If any of you have a chance to come here, don't hesitate. The first day in Prague was not a fun one, as it was used doing laundry and searching for dinner. It is cold here!!! I bought and brought a very warm Marmot jacket, but as you may see in some of the photos, Erin commandeered it in Vienna, and the situation here is the same. I'm stuck wearing girlie jacket from Japan, which is too confusing ... read more

Vienna, Day 2

October 13th 2007

We started the day by finding breakfast, and then we stood outside an English bookstore waiting for it to open. We wanted to buy a guidebook for Prague, but despite waiting for 5 minutes after the posted opening time, the store never showed signs of life. Our first visit of the day was St. Stephan's Cathedral, as we had arrived right at closing time the night before. The church was open this time, but there was mass taking place: foiled again! We wandered around the downtown for a while, and then went back to St. Stephan's a third time. Success! Though the crypt wasn't open, we did go to the top for a look around. The view was nice, but not nearly as interesting as the one from the Duomo in Milan. We visited the Imperial ... read more

It took us forever to get here. First, we had a 3 hour train ride from Athens to Patras. Then, we had a 22 hour ferry trip from Patras to Ancona. Then, we had a 2 hour train ride to Bologna, where we waited 9 hours for a overnight train from Bologna to Vienna. I knew that Greece was too far out of the way! But, the good news is that we are here now. Erin immediately fell in love with Vienna, and I'm of the same opinion: it's a great city, or appears to be after the day we've spent here. There are lots of beautiful buildings, but we haven't really explored any of them yet. I want to go to the Imperial Palace today, and hopefully to the crypt. There's something oddly fascinating about ... read more

Being in Athens for 5 nights, we actually have the opportunity to pace ourselves, which is a first since Geneva at the beginning of the trip. We slept in a bit to recover from the ordeal undergone in getting here, and then headed out towards the Acropolis. We paid 12 euros each for a ticket that is good for 6 sites, among them the Acropolis itself. We stood talking to Leonard and Bill, two travellers from Texas; Leonard used to live in Korea, so Erin was in raptures. When we finally decided to ascend the hill, we realized that I only had one of the tickets...Erin's had walked off, so she had to buy a new one. I had wandered a head for a bit while Erin stayed back to talk to Leonard and Bill. Erin ... read more

Unable to convince Erin to abandon Greece, I was at least able to talk her into going by rail to Bari rather than to Ancona - the difference between a 16-hour boat ride as opposed to a 22-hour boat ride. Smooth, right? Wrong. We found out after we booked our 7:30 AM train reservations that the ferry left at 8:00 PM, not 1:00 PM as expected. We got to Bari at 12:30, to the port at 1:30, and sat around for 4 hours until we were allowed to board the ferry. We then sat for another 2 hours before we left shore. We entertained ourselves by talking to Nick, an 18 year-old adventurer from Perth, Australia, and a couple from Alberta, Canada, whose names I didn’t get, but Erin tells me were Loren and Catherine. The ... read more

For some reason, I had a lot of trouble typing this up. I’ve seen a lot of amazing, ancient things in the last few days, but I’m having difficulty in encapsulating it all. Hopefully the pictures will do the job. The hostel here is not pleasant. The room has 5 bunk beds in it, but should probably only have 3. There are no ladders to reach the top bunks, so the woman on the top bunk next to mine steps on Erin and bounces off of my bed to get into hers. Although it seems that she’s from Spain, I’ve taken to calling her ‘Eastern European Guitar Hero, as she carries a guitar around with her. There is a shower in the room, but that doesn’t do much good when there are 10 people sharing it. ... read more

Because Erin went to School There

The town name is Montepulciano, but it isn't listed as a choice. It's in the Tuscan region, hence the selection that I made. Erin went to college there for a semester and a half 4 years ago. The trip to Montepulciano went well, with relatively little confusion. I talked to two people that live in New York, one of whom grew up in Hilliard. On arriving to Chuisi station, we rode a bus for about 30 minutes until we reached Montepulciano. We met two Americans on the bus; one living in Texas, the other, her daughter, living in Arizona. Upon reaching Montepulciano we took the local bus, which was to take us to the top of the hill. We made a loop, and found ourselves right back where we started. The bus picked up one more passenger, ... read more

Our last night in Venice provided a rough night of sleep, as the skies opened and the rain poured in. In addition to her cold, Erin developed a rash of some sort. I'll be auctioning off any body parts that fall off. It was pretty cool to see the canal water level raised as we walked to the hotel reception building to check out. As Erin used the Internet to confirm our next hotel location, I talked to 4 people from the US who all went to school in the Houston area. It rained when I was in Houston, so I had a good conversation with them about the lack of drainage there. One of the girls has been to Dayton a few times for some sort of national competition. There was more confusion at the ... read more
