From Hanoi, I began my adventure south, first stopping in Hue. And what an adventure it was! First was the rain. I decided to walk from my hostel in Hanoi to the train station because I was not happy that a taxi charged a extra dollar each for the dark (I was taking the night train that left at 11) and for the rain so that my taxi ride would have cost 4 dollars. This is outrageous considering the most you ever pay otherwise for a taxi is a dollar. So, I got on my high horse and decided to huff it the 3 kilometers. When I started it was just sprinkling so no problem. Then the rain increased until it was actually hurting it was falling so hard and fast and I had to take ... read more

When planning what to do and see while I was in Vietnam, everyone told me I needed to go to Ha Long Bay. I didn't really do much research other then a few google image searches and it looked really neat, so I booked a trip with my hostel I was staying at in Hanoi. The one thing I did learn was that you get what you pay for on these trips to Ha Long Bay and not to be too cheap. With this advice I had to choose between a 60, 75 or 85 dollar excursion for my two day, one night trip aboard a boat in the bay. I went for the 85 dollar mostly because it would have less people maxing out at 14 on the boat. It was a good choice! I ... read more

I think it is rather hard to prepare for all that Hanoi is. In a nutshell, Hanoi is crazy! It is also a very intriguing city that leaves a ton to be explored, tried, and experienced. This is probably why I enjoyed my couple days here so much. (though two and a half days was plenty!) The first thing anyone notices when they visit Hanoi (anywhere in Vietnam for that matter) is the traffic! It is was overwhelming for me at first with motorbikes, bikes, cars, vans and big buses coming from all directions (literally), the constant shrill of horns seemingly honking to just make noise, and small streets making for one wild scene. There are very few stop lights and even when there are, stopping on red is optional. They technically drive on the right ... read more

I have been to many capital cities, though ironically never my own. One thing I've noticed however is that most capital cities are more or less the same and are popular only because they are a capital. This is definitely the case with Vientiane. I traveled to this city after my time tubing in Vang Vieng in order to catch a flight to Vietnam. I stayed one day and that was plenty as the city doesn't really offer a whole lot. You can check out the pictures but the most exciting thing that did happen to me while there was a motorcade of some sort that came roaring through the city. I think they were foreign dignitaries and it was a rather long motorcade with a several police cars, 10 cars each with one person in ... read more

In The Vang Vieng - Tubing

Picture Cancun during spring break and you can get a pretty good idea of what it is like "tubing" in Vang Vieng with a few minor differences and added quirks. Vang Vieng has only really become big in the last few years but before that was a little known stop mostly only visited by backpackers who loved the laid back town in a picturesque setting with a great river that featured local bars along the shores. Rent an inner tube and mozy on down the river stopping at the different bars along the way. Just describing it sounds like the perfect recipe for a future tourist Mecca. Sure enough, the word got out and now Vang Vieng is booming with tons of tourist in addition to backpackers who come for the great party scene, the special ... read more

Luang Prabang is a old colonial town that while doing well to cater to the endless stream of tourist that the slow boat drops off on their shores, also has retained much of its charm. I was a little disappointed to see that while you get a lot of money for your dollar (they actually prefer US dollars and even only accept dollars for your visa because their currency isn't quite stable enough) the money doesn't go quite as far as in Thailand with prices being a bit more expensive (though still cheap in comparison to the states). The group of us that shared the back of the boat found a good guesthouse to stay and wandered the night market and got food the first night. That is when we also planned the next days big ... read more

The slow boat from thailand to Laos has been a popular journey for backpackers for a while and recently has also become really popular amongst all travelers. It consists of a two day journey down the Mekong river in long but narrow wooden boats that, from what i could tell, are owned by families who live on the boats and take passengers up and down the river. If you kept going on the river, you would eventually end up in Vietnam. The boat ride is long (about 6 hours each day) and depending on whether you get a seat or not, can be a little uncomfortable (the seats are just old car seats bolted down). While the boats could probably hold 70 to 80 people, they tend to cram closer to a hundred on them. There ... read more

I had originally planned to do a three day, two night trek to visit the tribal villages in the mountains above Chiang Mai along with a bamboo river rafting and elephant riding adventure. After talking with two different groups who had just returned from trekking (one a three day and the other a two day, one night trek) I decided to change my trek to a two day as the three day group said they had a bad guide and were bored a lot, while the two day group said it was very action packed, fun and they had a great guide. It seemed pretty dependent on the guides but I decided if I did get a bad guide I only wanted him for two days instead of three. So after a call to the agency, ... read more

A sweaty mess

Thailand is hot! And muggy! Which means I'm always sweating! In Bangkok it's especially bad because of all the cars, street vendors cooking, and all the cement and people. Thank goodness for their air conditioned metro system. It is a very welcome relief from the intense heat walking around. Most hostels offer rooms with either a fan or air conditioning and you pay quite a bit more for air conditioning but it is worth it because otherwise you cannot sleep its so hot! I feel like I always look like I just got out of an intense work out in all my pictures. My two daily cold showers have been like heaven in order to cool down and get clean of all the sweat. Bangkok also gives the senses a real work out when walking around. ... read more

Chiang Mai has been a really nice break from the craziness that is Bangkok. While still very much catering to the large amount of tourism, it maintains an element of charm and authenticity while still being a pretty big and important city. One of the things I really am liking about Chiang Mai is that you can wander around and everybody pretty much leaves you alone unlike Bangkok where I was always being bothered. I also really like the hostel I'm staying at. It is a really chill place with a great staff and atmosphere. Last night we had a big BBQ with everyone staying there, where they made free soup for everyone (why they love super hot soup when it is already so hot outside baffles me) and chicken for sale. I met another British ... read more
