| 16th December 2009 GEORGIA DOSCAS 12/15/09 | Spectacular photos and comments - From: Exploring Constantinople I STUDIED ABOUT THE BYzANTINE EMPIRE AND CONSTANTINOPLE. I WAS FORTUNATE TO VISIT THE CITY IN 1968. SAINT SOPHIA WAS MAGNIFICENT. I AM GLAD THAT IT HAS BECOME A MUSEUM AND THAT MORE WORK TO RESTORE ITS SPLENDOR CONTINUES. IT WILL BRING ALOT OF TOURISM AND MONEY TO THE CITY ONCE IT IS COMPLETELY RESTORED. RESPECT FOR DIVERSITY, HISTORY, ART, ARCHITECTURE AND RELIGIONS BRINGS STRENGTH TO THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE AND PEACEFUL COEXISTANCE. THANK YOU |

| 6th March 2009 explorer_keith | Finding a Room - From: The First of Seven Wonders I never had a hard time finding a room in Turkey. I never had a reservation in any of the towns I visited. | 1st March 2009 Kate | Wow... - From: The End of a Multi-Continent Quest! Now that I think about it, the trip to the British Museum for you would not have been just an ordinary trip to a stuffy old bunch of dark rooms. Given your extensive travel experience, I can only imagine that getting in amongst it, with your knowledge of history, would have been a mighty experience - i actually wouldnt have minded doing it alongside you. Your knowledge and eye for detail really is superb. K x |

| 13th February 2009 The Travel Camel | Ah - the memories! - From: Aphrodite's City I was in Aphrodisias in 1992 and as rennovation was just commencing, there were no other tourists, and the only sign of life was a large snake that slithered between my feet! Apart from the stadium, everything looks so much cleaner and restored - there is even a museum now. This brings back many memories (including the not-so-welcome Turkish bus journeys) so thanks for this entry - and especially the photos! |

| 6th November 2008 explorer_keith | Working in Antarctica - From: A Journey Back In Time When I was working down there I got there by flying from New Zealand down to 'The Ice' on a big Air Force Reserve plane, which landed on an ice runway. I was there for nine months through the long, dark winter and my job was field engineer for a construction project. It was a lot of fun. Let me know if you have any other questions. |
| 3rd November 2008 kari | - From: A Journey Back In Time Hey there- I went to Antarctica a fews years back and fell in love with it. I have always thought of going to work and live there for a bit. I was wondering if you could answer a few questions to get em started. How did you get there? How long were you there and what was your job? |

Thank you for sharing it! and as usual...amazing pictures! Really love the one you took of "The Grand Doorway", well done! ps: dont worry French people ALL keep calling Beijing Peking (guess no one told them...hahaha) |
| 2nd September 2008 explorer_keith | Istanbul vs. Constantinople - From: Exploring Constantinople I do use the name Istanbul when I talk about the city, but, on the particular day I was writing about, most of what I visited was once part of Constantinople as well - It is possible to visit and explore the ruins of Constantine's city while spending time in the modern city of Istanbul. I am one of the few people that prefers Peking over Beijing - Perhaps I am just old fashion. |
| 2nd September 2008 Sallycigim | - From: Exploring Constantinople Very nice, erudite blog! It hasn't been Constantinople for over 500 years, though-- People don't say Peking anymore, how about giving Istanbul its proper moniker? Glad you loved it. |
| 26th August 2008 DeVonne Whitehead | Very Impressive!! - From: Exploring Constantinople I have been to Istanbul and I missed out on the beauty you shared here. These are absolutely beautiful pictures, and show the intensity of the Muslim religion. Thank you for the sharing. DeVonne |
| 8th August 2008 Raf Jah | Superb descripription - From: To the Magnificent Land of the Turks I love the fact that you are proud of your Americanness. Well done! More well done for being able to write so well. As you plane descended I knew exactly where you were. I've flown/bussed and trained into and outof Istanbul so many times that i could almost guess the runway you used. You've also really got a grip on the nation. Every backpacker should take that metro into town. Go east- see the rest. You'll be so surprised. Cheers raf |
| 7th August 2008 Odonnell | Thank You For Your Blogs - From: To the Magnificent Land of the Turks Howdy Keith Martin. You don't know me but, I came across your travelblog a few years past by accident. I was surfing internet while being click happy. I completely enjoy your blog. I'll never be able to travel to the destinations you've been to and I'm glad that you are able to. I truly get the feel of the land from seeing your photos and reading what you have to say in your own words. Your photos are magnificant but, you word your blog like an average guy with no pretentious words or paragraphs. I get a better understanding from what you've written than reading any National Geographic magazine, which is mostly advertisements now. You write as if you're speaking comfortably to a family member or friend. Anywho. I've been reading your travelblog for a few years now and I just wanted to thank you for taking the time, effort and nerve in sharing your travel adventures with the online community. May good luck and safety follow you in your future endeavours. D Odonnell |
| 21st June 2008 Amber | Bury St. Edmunds - From: The End of a Multi-Continent Quest! Hey Keith, You were right in my back yard. Bury St. Edmunds I know very well, did you make it to New Market or Cambridge? Those are all villages that I grew up around. Every Saturday we would go to Bury to get our fruit and veggies. Seeing the pictures made me miss home. Did you see the smallest pub in the world? It is in Bury. |
| 3rd June 2008 cato brekke | Well done, Keith! - From: The End of a Multi-Continent Quest! Nice blog, but when do we see you in Norway ? |
| 2nd June 2008 Jabe | Congratulations ... - From: The End of a Multi-Continent Quest! ... on hitting the 7, though I would guess that the vast majority of people in that club i) didn't see Europe last, and ii) didn't spend more than 2 weeks in Antarctica. Good effort! |
| 2nd June 2008 denidax | egg - From: The End of a Multi-Continent Quest! Hey!!! I've been reading your blog for a while and I love it because you go to many places I don't even think of as a possibility... I always thought the round building looked like an egg too, but they call it "The Gherkin"...and I guess if you let your imagination flow a little it looks more like a gherkin than an egg...but it's up to everyone to choose what they want it to look like... Keep exploring!!! Deni |
| 3rd May 2008 explorer_keith | A Return to the Mayan Jungle - From: Fun With Lava My time in the Peten area was definately rushed, so I will be heading back down in the next few years to see more. I think my next trip in the region will include a river journey down the Passion and Usumacinta as far as Piedras Negras. The camera I used for that trip was a point and shoot Cannon (Power Shot A620) that had a few manual settings. |
| 3rd May 2008 erik | Tikal - From: Fun With Lava Do you know that the access to temple IV has now been rebuilt with a humongous zig zag wooden staircase over on the south side? I was there (again) April '08 I love the Mayan world and have been to Tikal a few times. You should look forward to Uaxactún and many other sites in the area. I'm told there is over a thousand registered ones, and I have only visited some 30 of them and loved every minute. Tikal, El Mirador and Nakum are my favourites. Thanks for your great photos (what camera?) and writings. Cheers Erik |

| 2nd April 2008 explorer_keith | Tom Crean - From: Across the Vast Southern Ocean To me, Tom Crean is one of the greatest of the explorers from the 'Heroic Age' of Antarctic exploration, yet his is a little known name. I was unaware of the modern Tom Crean - Perhapse the name in itself leads to greatness. Could they be related? Feel free to send the link. |
| 2nd April 2008 RandLJacobson | Re: Tom Crean redux - From: Across the Vast Southern Ocean Read the text. Saw the reference. I got it. If you don't mind I would like to send a link to this picture to the Milwaukee sports press. |
| 2nd April 2008 RandLJacobson | Re: Tom Crean Library - From: Across the Vast Southern Ocean First of all--I just happened across your blog and I think it is extraordinary, especially this and other entries from the Southern Hemisphere. What a great opportunity you've had, and what great use you have made of it! I had to comment on the picture of the engraved stone at the Tom Crean library, because this very morning it was announced that Tom Crean, the basketball coach for Marquette University here in Milwaukee, is leaving to take the head coach position at Indiana. Tom Crean has been a major figure here, even though I suspect no one was aware of his illustrious namesake. And I just wondered--did you include this picture because you are a Marquette alumnus, or fan? Or is this Tom Crean of independent significance to you? (Since this is a spur-of-the-moment comment, it is written before I have read the entire text, and I will do so once I am done writing. If the answer is already contained therein, you needn't respond.) |

| 30th April 2007 Uncle Hud | Atlanta Immigration - From: The Journey Home I live in metro ATL, so I often go through our stellar customs, immigration, and homeland security checks at Hartsfield-Jackson. Many are indeed officious and rude, but what bothers me most is their attitude that you must prove your right to re-enter. International travel has lost all its glamour. |
| 25th April 2007 Brenda Davidson | Co-worker of your Mother - From: A Journey Back In Time Keith, we here at work have all followed your journey and prayed for your safe return. | 17th March 2007 Garcia | Canela, not canola - From: I Have Found Chocolate! The other ingredient in the chocolate mixture you mentioned (the one that "looks like bamboo") is canela - cinnamon - in it''s natural form (bark). Canola, the product of pressing rapeseed, is indeed oil, but has nothing to do with chocolate making. Happy cocoa to you! |

I dream about Iguazu and even just like saying it...Iguazu, Iguazu Iguaz...u see what I mean. Glad to experience it with you Keith. Best of Luck and Health and Happy Experiences along the way. P.S. Did you get a chance to see Mel Gibson's Apocalypto? Not sure what he was trying to convey, though the fantastical feathering and costuming of the king, etc painted my studies and memories with bright colors. Review: 3 stelae and Hmmm |

It is beautiful and historic and really BRAZIL. Not a fancy tourist trap but a real African/Portuguese city with beaches to die for and a wealth of churches with many objects worth seeing a few good museums and lots of good food. Thanks for the joy of your blog. |
| 27th January 2007 Erica | the stuck redneck - From: To the Southern Latitudes I love your family . Good job moms. |
| 21st January 2007 Kathy Leipman | The Tree of Life - From: A Nearly Perfect Paradise Your sister and I tried to find out the name of the tree and were unable to find it on the internet. Do us a favor and ask a local. We want to know. Carry on, Son. Love, Mom |
| 19th January 2007 Pheeleepa | hi - From: A Nearly Perfect Paradise Hi, I enjoyed reading about the falls -I was there in 2001 and it brought back a lot of memories:-) Beautiful photos! My camera got wet and the film was spoiled when I went on the boat (the waterpoof bag didn't work or something), so had to get copies from a friend...but of cause it wasn't the same! |
| 4th January 2007 His Mother | Well, he's off again - From: To the Southern Latitudes Watch out Argentina! He's on the way. You know, Son, at least an angry redneck would have stayed close to home and done normal trips to the beach. Gee, thanks alot, Mr. Buffet! And to think I took him to your first concert! What was I thinking! Enjoy, Son. Be safe. Love, Mom |
| 4th January 2007 Kate | Take Me With You! - From: To the Southern Latitudes I am so glad you are resuming your travels!!! I'm so jealous. I have had to reenter the rat race which was unplanned but necessary :( I wish you all the luck and of course, I'll be travelling with you in spirit! |
| 13th December 2006 explorer_keith | Botfly treatment - From: The Journey Home I was going to mention the 4th of July party entertainment (removing the botfly from my leg) in the next blog, but there it is. |
| 13th December 2006 Mom | Botfly treatment - From: The Journey Home Son, you forgot to tell them that Vicks Vapor Rub is perfect for smothering botflies and also aids in their removal. Its a miracle product. Its amazing that people who live staid, quiet lives don't want to hear about such things as botflies - especially over dinner. Go figure! Carry on bravely, Son. Oh, I saw a great bumper sticker tonight. It said, "Be a hero! Fight global warming." Good idea, huh? |
| 19th November 2006 Yathi | Well done you. - From: Farewell Antarctica Amazing stuff man. Next stop Reykjavik?? Or maybe Svarlbard! You are living our dream Keith. Some day I hope I would follow the trails you are blazing!! |

| 16th September 2006 anonymous | You Had Me Going Son! - From: Into The Mirador Basin I was quite relieved that you weren't really in a black hole with unknown creatures approaching. I had already started packing my bags to go find the guide that trapped you in there! As far as your adventures with creapy crawly things, I'm not surprised. After all, I did used to find frogs in the pockets of your jeans! Carry on bravely, Son of Mine. Love, Mom |

| 31st July 2006 Nancy | Fantastic - From: Fun With Lava You have the only blog (other than my own) which I love to look at and read each time you post. I think your joy in your travels is what pulls me your way and then the wonderful pictures and excellent writing draw me into the total scene of the places you visit. Some day I hope you will sit down and write a travel book so more people can enjoy the trips you are making. It sounds as if you are winding down from this extended trip and heading home. Where will you go next? What fun will I get to have reading in the coming months, years? Thank you for loving the places you visit and helping me to feel as if I had been right there with you. njpl |
| 26th July 2006 Jeff Casey | I am there too! Keith this rocks! - From: Fun With Lava Wow! This bulletin is one of your best. The writing and photos transport me there. I can feel the heat from the lava, and the bite of the ants. I can smell the new rain on the jungle canopy and see the green canopy from atop the Temples. So cool. I hope your trip home is fun and you enjoy it. Good Luck from ole Mare Island... thanks for the quick journey.. |
| 20th July 2006 Kate | Still watching - From: Adventures and Misadventures in Honduras Still keeping an eye out on you, Keith. How travel can really change each of us! |
| 19th July 2006 LW | awesome - From: Adventures and Misadventures in Honduras Your pictures are great - thank you for sharing |
| 17th July 2006 Carolyn Taylor | wonderful stories and pictures - From: Adventures and Misadventures in Honduras I spent 2 weeks in Copan Ruinas last March ( I stayed with a family and went to school to study Spanish) and enjoyed the low key bustle of the town. One of my host sisters runs the snack bar at the ruins and she helped me get a ticket. Unfortunately, the sculpture musuem was closed for renovations. The day I visited there were very few tourists and at times I was the only one there. I revel in that just as you seem to do. I also visited Gracias just because I liked the name. I was fortunate to have one of my host sisters and her husband drive me ( I paid them well) and it was worth every penny. I was glad I went to see a town without tourists. I ,too, went on to Antigua and ws there for Semana Santa. Thanks for your great pictures. |
| 23rd June 2006 Karen | Great journal! - From: Sharks, Jaguars and the Crystal Skull of Lubaantun I enjoyed reading about your journey to Belize! It brought back memories of when I was there in 1997 (Placencia). I really love the pictures too! |

| 12th May 2006 Kathy L. | I think Nancy is correct - From: I Have Found Chocolate! Actually, I think we're all correct but - in this instance, I think it is the language barrier that got you. From the picture, it most certainly looks like cinnamon. So canela is my final choice. Mom |
| 11th May 2006 Sally Patsios | Mayans - From: La Ruta Maya Keith, I have been facinated by the Mayans ever since I did a math project on their number system in my senior year in high school. I am really envious that you have had such a wonderful trip. Just stay away from Montezuma. He is up to nothing but bad things. Take care. Love, Sally |
| 11th May 2006 Kathy Leipman | I DO SEE THE JAGUAR! RUN, SON. - From: La Ruta Maya Just kidding. Cool pictures. Are you coming home for Mother's Day? No? Well then, Quiero algo de Mexico. Love, Mom |
| 11th May 2006 Timo | Great - From: La Ruta Maya Thanks for your story.I´m going back to see more of the Maya wonders in october so your account was very helpful.Greetings from Finland. Timo |
| 8th May 2006 Steve | Memories - From: I Have Found Chocolate! Hey Man, I just seen you post on the main page, and took a look. I loved Mexico, and Mazunte was a very special place for me. I spent my 21st there, and fell in love with a girl who I traveled with and had a relationship with for almost 2 years. I have no pictures of Mazunte at all, so this brought a big smile to my face....I slept up in hte start in a hamock over looking the beach.....Ahhh....what a great place!! |
| 8th May 2006 Judith Green | Canola - From: I Have Found Chocolate! Dear Keith, I don't know how I got onto this site as I am in a computer class in Mildura, Victoria, Australia. I used to sell rape seed, which is another name for canola. The farmers planted it and it was harvested as a sunflower. It is used in a lot of margarine in Australia so I agree with your mother it is used in place of butter. After treatment it tastes OK. |
| 6th May 2006 Nancy | canela not canola - From: I Have Found Chocolate! That's your problem. I just looked on the spanish english dictionary site. Cinnamon in English is canela in Spanish. |
| 6th May 2006 Nancy | Canola and cinnamon - From: I Have Found Chocolate! I vote with cinnamon since I know it's not Canola that is used to make oil. That is a small yellow flowered plant and couldn't make a roll that looks like a stick of cinnamon. I love Mexican hot chocolate since it has a wonderful cinnamon flavor. Your blog is the only one I read. You are a superb writer and photographer. Your love of Mexico shines through all you write and makes me want to go there and I have never thought I wanted to go to Mexico. Do you speak Spanish? I remember so little of what I studied back in 1961 (can you imagine how little that is?) We are doing a blog on our stay in Prague and you might enjoy it if you have time to read with all your wonderful trips. |
| 5th May 2006 KateEighty | Hiya! - From: I Have Found Chocolate! So glad to see you are still travelling... and still in Mexico! x k |
| 4th May 2006 Tatiana | Canola - From: I Have Found Chocolate! Canola is cinnamon. |
| 4th May 2006 Kathy Leipman | Fess up Son! - From: I Have Found Chocolate! Okay, Son, be honest! You bumped your head, too, didn't you? Oh by the way, here's what I found on Canola: "It is genetically engineered rapeseed. It is derived from the mustard family and is considered a toxic and poisonous weed, which when processed, becomes rancid very quickly." That being said, it has become a popular cooking oil. I suspect they were using it for its oil - instead of butter. I think I would prefer butter. Carry on, Son. Love, Mom |
| 19th April 2006 Kathy Leipman | AND Stay off over - crowded buses! - From: In the Jungle, the not so Mighty Jungle Love Mom |
| 17th April 2006 Kathy Leipman | Voladores - Totonic People - From: In the Jungle, the not so Mighty Jungle So did they originate bunge jumping? It looks like that's what they are doing. Anyway, you need to tell us what the ceremony is all about. Be safe, Love, Mom |
| 2nd April 2006 Maggiegladyoucame | Great article - From: Guanajuato and the Monarchs of Mexico This is the first of your writing and pictures that I've looked at. I hope to get this good one day. I'll be back. May I recommend this article on my blog? It's travel but in the USA. There are a few other topics too - an occansional book mention or a recipe. I'm w.maggiegladyoucame.blogspot.com. If I don't hear from you in a couple of days I'll assume that I may refer folks to you - surely that's a good thing. Thanks, |
| 13th March 2006 Sally | Tunnels - From: The Canyon and the Colonial Heartland Keith, Your blog was wonderful. I found some of the pictures facinating, especially the one of the tunnel coming out of the rock precipice. I also enjoyed your tale of El Blanco on one of your other ones. I think you are doing something very exciting and enriching. Have fun, but stay safe! Love. as always. |
| 12th March 2006 Unpaidbill | Love Mexico too - From: The Canyon and the Colonial Heartland Agree with yor impressions of the scary railway. The road down to Batopilas is even better, if you get the chance. Also, Mazetlan and Zacatecas my 2 favouritest paces in Mexico. I'm further south now but on the way back. www.travelblg.org/bloggers/unpaidbill |
| 11th March 2006 Nancy Lively | Thank you so much - From: The Canyon and the Colonial Heartland We are bloggers too and were on our way to add something to our blog about Prague. We stopped and read your entry about the Copper Canyon (a place we hope to visit some day). You write beautifully! Your pictures are quite amazing too. I really enjoyed your whole entry and think I will try to follow your adventures. Thanks for a REALLY pleasant 'read'. |
| 2nd March 2006 Dominique | Met? - From: McMurdo Station Hi Keith, I might have met you while at McMurdo. I was there from Win Fly to part of Main Body and worked with a marine biology dive group. Where are you from? Wanted to let you know I read a page of your jounal. Nice Job. |
| 28th February 2006 Liz | Vine snake - From: Into the Copper Canyon Hey Keith, I’m glad you are having fun. The snake you fond is a vine snake and they are mildly venomous. So it was probably a good idea not to handle it. Take Care, Liz |
| 27th February 2006 KenL | Pancho Villas - From: Into the Copper Canyon Great blog. Cool that you spoke to the Prez. Pancho's house looks like a place YOU could reside. Sounds like the horse was over the top and scary but when you look back it will seem like a great adventure. Appears you are having a blast. Stay in touch and be SAFE. |
| 27th February 2006 KenL | Pancho Villa - From: Into the Copper Canyon Great blog. Cool.... you spoke to the Prez. Pancho's house loooks like something YOU could handle living in. The horse sounds like it may have been a little over the top and a little scary but when you look back it will seem a great adventure. Better brush up on your comment allez vous. Stay in touch and SAFE travel. |
| 27th February 2006 Kathy | Smart move on the snake, Son. - From: Into the Copper Canyon You should show your picture to one of the locals to see if they can identify the snake. He should have a name. I looked up snakes indigenous to the area but this snake looks small in the picture and the only thing I found that looked similar was a type of Boa. |
| 14th February 2006 Eggs on Legs | Kepler Track - From: Fiordland Cruising I think Kepler track looks like an Ewok village. Great photos - I am very impressed with your travels - esp since we have just arrived in Christchurch from Aus - it's particularly interesting for me. We'll hopefully make it to a number of places the same as yourself. Cheers, and thanks for sharing fab trip info and great shots! Sharon. |

Yet, we live vicariously through you! Carry on! Love, Mom - Kathy Leipman |
