Yesterday we got back from our first school sponsored trip, it was to Alexandria. The bus ride was about 3 hours, most of which was through the dessert therefore there was not much to see; surprisingly, there is a lot of real estate...who would want to live in the middle of the desert!? when we made a rest stop as "Masters"- toilet, convenient store, restaurant, gas station, clothing store, ect.- I was going to buy a little hazelnut chocolate bar until the cashier, Wadgy, told me it was LE 7...no go. i found something to satisfy my sweet tooth for a mere LE2 (about 50 cents) it was a deal. I learned many things today on our adventures; 1. call before going to museums. 2. saying your a student doesn't get you the discount. 3. don't try and take what looks like a short cut. 4. little old egyptian women can restore ones faith in this country. 5. don't go to KFC for dinner, even in a moment of weakness. 6. the super market can be a dangerous place for one's waistline. 7. doing laundry is exhausting. Today provided me with many learning experiences starting with the Museum of Islamic Art. The museum "contains one of the world's finest collections of Islamic applied art" according to the Lonely Planet guide, which also informed me that is was closed for restoration and would re-open in 2006. the first days of Cairo where amazing, though I'm sure I would not feel this way had I not come a few days early to stay with Kellie (come back). I was supremely lucky in the fact that Kellie and her friends showed me around and helped me get a grasp on certain aspect that are FAR different then home. Upon arrival at the Cairo Airport I was terrified that after NOT taking my study abroad advisor's advice to get my visa before I left for Cairo, that I was not going to be able to get into the country. I was pleasantly surprised at how easily I obtained my currency, visa, and how swiftly I made it through customs. With a flash of my passport I was off.
