The journey begins again - this time the plan was to sail to Alaska. However, after fleeing a crazy Captain in the San Juan Islands and spending six glorious weeks (filled with fun adventures and amazing encounters) around Vancouver Island BC, I’m back on the water. This time sailing from Washington to Hawaii.

Picture you are surrounded by a canvass dome extending 12 miles in any direction. Paint the entire surface a matted silver, with just a thin line along the horizon hinting at a definition between sea and sky. With daybreak the grey fades to pale blue and white cumulous clouds mushroom along the horizon. Some pop up like textbook balls of fluffy cotton wool or other caricatures of the imagination. Others billow into angry towers (cells to be admired, from a distance). The stillness of the morning is broken by a steady breeze that picks up and the clouds vanish. For the first week this is a brisk northern wind that grazes the right cheek. Then, as the latitude shrinks, it is a warm breeze felt behind the ears and on the back of the neck as ... read more

Yep that’s right, I’m back on a boat. This time headed from Washington to Hawaii. Before everyone freaks (and rightly so after my previous gig), let me say that its been the POLAR OPPOSITE of my last experience. Exhausted from the whole Captain Dave debacle, I had pretty much shelved the sailing idea for now. Instead I thought I’d stay on Quadra Island and maybe travel overland to Alaska and the Yukon for the summer before returning home. However, each time I would recall my story to the Quadra locals about how I came to be there, the response was almost always the same: “Oh, you just missed Alice. She’s awesome but she just left to sail to Hawaii”. Turns out she only got as far as Port Townsend before running into a delay which meant ... read more

I've had an absolute ball since jumping ship - the BEST decision ever. There has been a continuous stream of amazing encounters, fun adventures, and even a fleeting romance. But my previous blogs have been far too long, so I thought I’d let pictures tell the tale of my last month in the San Juans, Quadra and Vancouver Islands. Lazy? Perhaps. ... read more

June 1- Day 1 (Tacoma to Port Townsend) We wake just before 4am. Captain Dave passive-aggressively says “No, don‘t you guys worry, I’ll do this part. You guys just sleep in“. A little stung, we all got up anyway as this was our last chance for a shower. Confused, I wondered how in our sleep we had somehow pissed him off. For six months I had been mentally preparing for this moment, and physically for last three weeks, so I have to admit there was some disappointed. But I was also amenable, trying to put myself in his shoes- a captain heading off on a trip for five months wanting to double check everything was set up and working correctly. We stood by idiotically while he ran around the boat in the dark like a mad-man ... read more

I don’t quite know how to describe the last few weeks in a way that sounds appealing to anyone else so I’ll preface the following by saying that I am enjoying myself. I’m learning a lot and looking forward to heading off. In the first week of living on the boat, daily life consisted of 8am-8pm scrubbing, installing, fixing, painting... Basically hard manual labor, involving every aspect of the boat. I get the feeling by the end of this trip I will be a qualified boat builder (the sight and sounds of me axel grinding and sawing entertained the residents in the marina for an afternoon), electrician, plumber, re-upholsterer/sail tailor, painter, knot tier (I‘m sure that‘s a job), meteorologist, film director and key grip, chart/map reader, logistician, kid who climbs up the mast, dive equipment test ... read more

And the adventure begins again. This time on the sea. For those I haven’t already told, I’ve signed on to crew a 42ft/13m sailboat from Seattle to Alaska… and possibly beyond. The general plan is to meander up the coast of British Columbia shooting a documentary, sailing and diving the rugged coastline. But its been a little while between blogs so let me back up a minute. The last two and a half years in a nut shell: I finished my travels winding through Central America, with side trips to Cuba and the US (I can‘t remember why it is the blogging stopped upon reaching Central America). Ryan went back to Canberra lured by the promise of hops, hens and home renovations (Thewsy- cheers for letting enjoythegoodtimes continue). I move to the US to spend time ... read more

Sad to say, but eight months in we are starting to do it a little tough. For me anyway the comfort of home is becoming just a little appealing as we start to make executive decisions such as "if you've seen one waterfall you've seen them all"... yes rude and arrogant of me to say but the current state of mind no less. Hopefully a quick trip to Cuba, a visit to Tikal, the highlands of Guatamaela and diving in the Bay Islands off Honduras will help perk us up and drive this travel fatigue away. Anyhow, an audit of past adventures since the last blog entry..... Our last days in Colombia were spent at a nice little place called Playa Blanca drinking beer, sleeping in hammocks and eating fresh fish and coconut rice on the ... read more

7 months in, like most travellers, Colombia is turning out to be the favourite country in South America. Beautiful scenery and exquisite colonial towns, a fascinating history with an enormously improved security situation (arguably safer than Ecuador and Peru) and seriously THE most welcoming people. IE... Tell all and sundry to get here.... and for the Australian Government to change the status of its travel warnings :) From Ecuador we entered Colombia´s rolling hills and spent some time in the coffee region of the south where much of nothing was heartily undertaken. There were some walks through the hills, hummingbird watching, orange and blackberry picking, slacklining and of course coffee touring. Hostels here have free coffee 24/7 so Ryan now has a habit of 5 cups a day. After Bogota the next major stop was the ... read more

Without a doubt our fabulous 12 days in the Galapagos Islands were the best part of the trip so far!!! Eight days cruising between the islands, stopping for brief on-land visits mingled with snorkling to explore below the surface, and a couple of days diving at the end. Co-existing in such close proximity with all the critters was amazing, they just don´t care that you are there. Absolute pinnacles were playing with baby sea lions in the water, boobie watching- especially divebombing after fish, and diving at Gordon Rocks with schools of hammer heads. We have great videos of all but they just didn´t want to load. Honestly my descriptions just can´t do it justice so I will let the pictures do the talking... and save you from all of Ryan´s boobie jokes. Kate P.s. Just ... read more

Kate and I will be unable to respond to any correspondence posted on this blog or sent to ryanthew@hotmail.com or kate_cecys@yahoo.com.au for the next 2 weeks. Unfortunately we have prior commitments to dive with seals/turtles/sharks, watch iguanas, tortoises and a plethora of birds in the Galapagos Islands. I also have permission from Kate to look at as many boobies as possible, in fact our guide will hopefully be pointing them out for me. If not occupying our time with the above we will most likely be on the sun deck of our yacht reading books and drinking cold beers or Cuba Libres. Please don´t think ill of us. Regards Ryan and Kate... read more
