the start of the ride .... brrrrrr
the beginning of the Death Road
along the Most Dangerous Road in the World

Life in La Paz is definitely La Vida Loca, the pace is crazy most of the time - traffic and people every where, protests and fiestas at every turn, street vendors seeling everything imaginable and the persistent smell of the open sewer - nice. At first, Iīll admit, I hated La Paz, it was so dirty and smelly and full-on. I intended to only stay two or three days at the most before heading over to Peru, but somehow Iīve managed to stay here nearly two weeks today, and Iīm planning to stay another week or two - making a month [View Full Entry]

Suffering from my first case of the Inca Quickstep (aka food poisoning) in nearly 5 months of travel, which isnīt too bad, I guess. So may not be up to much in the next week or so. The Death Road trip that was scheduled for this morning has been postponed, probably until next Sunday or Monday. In the meantime, will spend my recovery time watching movies (the new Johnny Cash movie this arvo), visiting Tiahuanaco, reading, going to a Manu Chao concert on Saturday night, and trying to put food into my shrunken and contorted stomach. See yī all later! [View Full Entry]

Yes, I know it sounds incredibly foolish, and yes, I may be risking life and limb for a good Travelblog entry, but dammit it just sounds so cool! The weather is supposed to be cool and more excitingly, foggy! Thatīs great, cos I really donīt want to see the gaping chasm to my left when Iīm concentrating on avoiding the oncoming trucks and buses that canīt see me. If I live to write another journal, Iīll post some piccies. But I digress, back to where I left off last time. Left the farm in Medoza in search of protein - as [View Full Entry]

This is a selection of pics taken from the Salar tour from Bolivia into San Pedro de Atacama (Chile), and on into the farm at Mendoza and Cordoba, Argentina. [View Full Entry]

Bolivian roads - the worldīs best (not)
where trains go to die
tripping over volcanoes

Yes, itīs taken a while, but I have some photos of the salt flats of southern Bolivia. It had rained shortly before we went there, so it was impossible to take the usual white glare/blue sky photos that seem to abound. However, I think I got the better of the deal, as the salar was then turned into an enormous mirror. The water was only a few inches deep above the white salt, so the reflections were perfect; so much so that my eyes had trouble discerning where the sky ended and the horizon began. Salar de Uyuni

Well Iīm now in Antofagasta, making a sort of detour from my vague original plan. I crossed the salars of southern Bolivia into Chile, albiet after doing my wildlife caring thing. Now Iīm likely to be heading a little further south to Viņa del Mar and Valparaiso on the Chilean coast, then over to Mendoza, Argentina for some good old fashioned hard work on an organic fruit farm. Lots of photos to upload, since my last post with photos was a while ago. [View Full Entry]

It appears that I have arrived in the midst of a mosquito epidemic, far beyond those of normal years. They drive you nearly insane on a daily basis - the whining noise, the abundant itchy bites, the disfiguration of your entire body, the threat of malaria .... need I go on? Iīll never complain about being bitten by bugs in Australia ever again, thereīs nothing that compares to this! The most fun part (not) is that we canīt wear insect repellent around the animals in case they lick us and make themselves sick. I kind of pooh-poohed this at first until [View Full Entry]

monkey madness South America
Itīs taken me a while to get around to writing here, but hopefully when I get a day off I can get some photos and stuff up. Have been moved from my kitty kat Quirqui to a more energetic cat called (imaginatively) Gato. Heīs a short, nuggety little puma, but he can move when he wants to. We normally walk him along his track in the morning, which is about 10km, although today the storms had caused some tree damage, blocking our path. So we ended up having to backtrack hree-quarters of the path, making it a 15km day. Then we [View Full Entry]

Made it to Villa Tunari and the Inti Wara Yassi wildlife refuge about a week ago. Have spent most of my days at work and most of my nights socializing, which , for everyone that knows me, is a big surprise! Made it through the christmas eve and christmas day parties, just new yearīs to go now. Most of my pics from here are bound to be of my kitty-kat Quirqui. His level of activity (i.e. none) fits in very well with my schedule, although I occasionally feel guilty about falling asleep on the job - but I can hardly blame [View Full Entry]
