I booked a trip with Pega tours in nakuru to go to maasai mara. I spend two nights there, and had one evening safari, one full day, and one in the morning. A lot of driving around on bumpy roads, and I saw a lot of animals. The camp was good the food was very good - and I met a girl from austria which I had a good time with, so a perfect safari! Showers with spiders (just shower after dark without a flashlight and you wont even notice) and ants in your trousers - these things you get used to very quickly! The best way of describing maasai mara is just by uploading photos! Enjoy. ... read more

I hadnt planned much for the holiday, and my initial plan was to stay in mombasa during new year. I arrived at a very shabby hotel - all though the staff was very friendly. Mombasa is a big city, and I hadnt read anything about what to do there, but I knew there were beaches! I tried to find a new place to stay, but everything was fully booked, so i travelled to Malindi the next morning. Ive become kind of a morning person here, and at nine I had already had breakfast, I had been to town to check my emails and was on the way to find a matatu for Malindi! I had booked a room at Ozis hotel, and I liked it! 100 shilling a night (90 kr) including the best breakfast Ive ... read more

After celebrating Christmas in Nakuru it was time to move around to see more of Kenya. I started out in Nairobi, meeting Banus and his family. I met them in a park not far from the YMCA were I stayed, and discovered a very nice park! Big enough to walk around for hours, and also a nice place to just hang out and relax. The following day I visited a coffe plantage - Sasini coffee! The mamager is a friend of Banus from when he worked for Sasini. I visited the fields of coffee trees, saw the process from drying the beens to finished product ready for burning or export. The mamager of the mill was very happy with Norwegians drinking so much coffee, they exported a lot of coffee beans to Friele. After the visit ... read more

Chrismas in Kenya! I actually hadnt thought much about how to spend the christmas. But then I met a norwegian woman who lives outside Nakuru with her kenyan husband and children. When she heared from some women at a conference she joined that there were a norwegian in egerton she wanted to get in touch, and I met her for a short while in town - and she invited me to spend the christmas with her family. I had an almost norwegian christmas eve, the food is a bit different - but very nice! Also - delays are not a stressfactor here, as in my home where my father is totally stressed if the dinner is not on the table five o'clock sharp! I had a wonderful christmas, almost as good as home, just a bit ... read more

Egerton is situated about 25 km outside Nakuru town. The way of travelling is matatus, and they pass all the time, and leave when they are full- or more than full. It is the way of moving around everywhere, and I start getting used to it. They almost throw you into it, and there is a lot of shouting and banging on the car when they try to fill it up. I asked James - what is the purpose of this banging on the car all the time? He just laughed and said its just the matatu-madness. The cars are supposed to carry 15 people including the driver, but 23 is ok. There is always room for one more in a matatu, and if the police are along the road you bribe then and keep driving. ... read more

My first safari! I guess there will be some more. I think the photos describe the beautiful view in the park and I saw a lot of animals! Lake Nakuru is known for the flamingos, but they were not there...just a few of them. During the rainy season parts of the lake is turned into pink from the large number of flamingos. No lions or giraffes (I will work to get the giraffe in sunset Janne!!), but a lot of animals really close up! A wonderful day! ... read more

Menengai Crater is an extinct volcano with views of Lake Nakuru, Lake Bogoria as well as the crater itself. It is a large Caldera, formed by millions of years of volcanic activity. The highest point, at some 2,300 m above sea level, has a signpost that shows the directions and distances to several places in the world. I went up there with Yvonne and Festus. To get there you have to use a taxi or a tuk tuk, so we send Festus to bargain the price to avoid the special mzungu price. We ended up using a tuk tuk, maybe not a wise decission, but very interesting! The three/wheeler is really slow, and not a very strong engine...Festus ran most of the hills, and me and Yvonne also struggled with some of the steep parts. But ... read more

ROSA - Resource-Oriented Sanitation concepts for peri-urban areas in Africa. This is a research project funded by EU to implement principles of sustainable sanitation in four African countries: Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. They also include a lot of local partners in the funding and implementation. During the first week I was shown around on different implementations sites, some under construction and some not yet started. Hopefully I will be able to see the development when Im back in Nakuru in February! It is really terrible to see how some people live here, and how little they actually have. Running water in the outskirts of town are almost non-excisting. Most people buy water from stations, but they can only buy it once or twice a week. Even the houses with running water experience lack of water. ... read more

After arriving Egerton Sunday I startet out the week with sampling greywater with James and Laura. James is doing his PH. D in greywater and will set up constructed wetlands to treat the water with the intention of reuse. Laura is fro Germany and she is doing her diploma here in Egerton. They are sampling from households around in Nakuru, and its not always an easy job. People get water once or twice a week, so you cannot be sure where to find it. People are really gathering and the kids are very curious when there is something going on, and when there four of us white people they were really excited! After sampling we went back to the campus and the lab. Its a small lab and a lot going on, so I did not ... read more

Kenya - finally there after counting down for months, weeks, days and hours! I was welcomed by James and Banus at the airport - they had actually been so eager to welcome me that they also were there the day before - but then I was still asleep in my bed in Oslo. It was so nice to see them again! We started off having breakfast at Banus place and saying hello to his family. Then I delivered all my luggage at the YMCA hotel close to Nairobi town centre and spend the rest of the day walking around with James. I got my visa for Uganda, had a walk around the main streets of the town, and then travelled by matatu to Kibera - the slum area of town. If I had arrived the area ... read more
