| 19th June 2007 Gidge | - From: Life in Captivity Erica, I really appreciate your commentary. It's a fantastic resource to hear a realistic description of these camps. Like Deb and Lauren, I wish you could write more about your life there, and the pictures are wonderful. All the best, Gidge |
| 15th June 2007 Deb | Incredible - From: Life in Captivity Oh, Erica, you're having the kind of life experiences all humans should have. I wish you'd write more, post more pictures. I'm starting to get so upset that I'm not going to make the safari next month--even though I know it's a completely different experience than you're writing about here. And BTW, your apartment is gorgeous--didn't expect that! Looks like it could be in L.A. Strange. I love you, girlfriend. -Deb. |
| 15th June 2007 Lauren | Wow! - From: Life in Captivity So interesting, Erica. I know you're incredibly busy there, but I'd love to hear more about all of this. Do you find your students in the Civic Education class receptive? Do they have different ideas about government than you? So many questions I want to ask. |

| 2nd March 2007 Kathie | Missing You - From: You Know You're in Sudan When.... It is a snowy morning here in Bedford, New Hampshire. I am enjoying a cup of coffee before making what will be a slow commute to work, and am thinking of my friend thousands of miles away...... I miss you and hope that you are doing well. I love you! |
| 23rd February 2007 guest | hi - From: Hanoi, Vietnam: 2006 yes, I was talking about the pagodas and temples. They were all built by Vietnamese. The architecture is somewhat similar to Chinese but it's not Chinese, and you may see Chinese characters upthere but it is because Vietnamese used to use Chinese character to write until they were introduced to the Roman Alphabet. Feeling that it takes only a few months to master writing using the Roman Alphabet while it takes year to memorize all characters, they adopted the Roman alphabet as the official writing. |
| 21st February 2007 Poz | Two thumbs up! - From: You Know You're in Sudan When.... Great blog! poz |
| 12th February 2007 Diny | Powerless? - From: You Know You're in Sudan When.... Erica... howdy ho buckaroo! I see that you're finally over the robbery? Love this posting/photo collection. About the 'powerless' thing... isn't it interesting? Seems like they leave everything up to Allah (hence the saying 'Insya Allah'). Do you think that they think that their living situation is because of God's will? Anyhoo... glad to hear from you again. My blog >> [http://accordingtod.wordpress.com] |
| 11th February 2007 egipsey | response - From: Hanoi, Vietnam: 2006 hi guest, thanks for writing. i was not referring to the mustard buildings but to the pagoda and temple that i visited which were definitely built by the chinese. granted i only had a short time there so sadly did not get to see much. |
| 9th February 2007 guest | buildings - From: Hanoi, Vietnam: 2006 HEY. Did someone tell you those buildings in Hanoi was built by the Chinese or you made assumption of it? Well, either way, you are deadly wrong. They were built by the Vietnamese ancestors, all by Vietnamese. QuÑc Tñ Giám, Hoàng Thành, Vn Mi¿u...those are ancient buildings of Vietnamese. |

| 17th July 2006 melis-the-sis | some truth here and there - From: The Tourist comment on Dad's comment: Is it possible to ever possible to bring enough wine to a family outing? comment on Erica's blog: OK, the apt is not easy to find, it's true. it's how we keep tourists out of my 'hood. :) xx |
| 17th July 2006 egipsey | etc from dad - From: The Tourist i read your blog re nyc--it has the punch of a raymond chandler's detective story. anyway all is well here. the pinic was a success even though cousin bob and his kids, verg and his group and pauline, carol and the medford group didn't make it. there were a ton of kids running around a matt's wife had a baby a couple of days later. it was a nice day of idle chat with all the kids. i brought some wine and all sampled the product, however, i didn't bring enough and quickly ran out. we are bracing for a hot spell--90's or better for the next week or so--it will definitly help the garden. there is a critter eating the lettuce and the leaves of the other plants so i put out a trap to try to catch the bastard--no luck so far. rich and emma are in brooklyn this weekend looking for an apartment and bringing some of her school stuff to her job. i am sure your mother will fill in the details of a wine tasting party we are planning to have on 7/31. all the people from the office and their mates will attend and of course harry's new squeeze. we will taste my wine and i will get some additional bottles from ray--it sould be fun. well, it time to start cooking dinner. luv u dad. |

| 14th July 2006 linda | smart blonde - From: The Tourist jill you are one very smart blonde (and pretty too) : ) love your comments! |
| 11th July 2006 Jill | drunk blonde - From: The Tourist no, not me... i had some issues with your most recent blog. first of all, i know you did not refer to our NYC as the "dirty city." i prefer to describe the heaps of garbage bags as "atmospherics." second, i know where you were staying while in town, and magellan himself would get lost trying to find the one store (and one well disguised bar). third, that blonde waitress was obviously drunk (i know, i am an expert). finally, "home" is anywhere you are loved. so NYC is your home (among many). miss you and i hope to see you at home again soon. |
| 5th July 2006 merrydash | french lessons..... - From: The Tourist Erica....loved your piece....and BTW...how's the French??????? ML |
| 5th July 2006 mom | students, abroad - From: The Tourist just to harken back to your previous blog for a moment. front page globe last week ran an article on "public spirited" high school students from affluent comunities who are invited to volunteer on service trips to third world countries to help the needy. cost to the student is $4,000. but besides the experience it also offers a leg up in the college admissions process. now regarding the present blog...home is where ever you are but you are definitely new york, you just felt displaced because you are displaced. temporarily!happy 4th of july! xo |
| 2nd July 2006 professorjdavis | home is nowhere - From: The Tourist Hi Erica, Very well-written piece, and I have been there many times. Traveling away for long periods does make one a person without a REAL home. Sorry we didn't connect when you were in NYC, it would have been great to see you! Funny, my trip back from GA in June I felt the first time coming back to NYC that I was coming HOME. So it will turn around for you when you are in one place for awhile. |
| 1st July 2006 Cousin | Beverly Jooo-leye 8? - From: The Tourist I think the deep south part of your family may be attending the family reunion - any chance you'll be there (we hope!)? |
| 29th June 2006 Auntie | Home coming - From: The Tourist Erica. this may sound corny but true. Remember the old saying,'home is where the heart is" |
| 29th June 2006 Dena | i could see it in your face - From: The Tourist What a beautiful story erica. you put well into words what i was sensing from you while you were home, uh i mean in nyc, yah, home. i know that feeling, i’ve been there. it’s frightening and wonderful at the same time. and as soon as you begin to truly enjoy every freeing aspect of it you are strapped to an apartment, an office and a pilates class, enjoy it my dear, beautiful, amazing woman friend. i love you, d i know i owe you an email, it’s coming... |
| 29th June 2006 Lauren M | Sing it, Sister - From: The Tourist I feel your pain, Erica. I thought coming back to New York would be a piece of cake. But when half my heart is still in London, it means I've lost the sense of what "home" even means in any more. I know a lot of people in this situation, people who never stop traveling or who live in multiple cities. I don't know yet what the answer is, but I think it's a relatively new phenomenon and we're probably all evolving toward a new understanding of home. If it helps at all, you're always welcome in my home (wherever it happens to be). |
| 29th June 2006 Gidge | Back again, huh - From: The Tourist Tough to come home(?). Great little vingnette to capture that tired and remote feeling one often has coming back... been there a few times myself, especially when coming back to NYC I'm having a few friends over to Podunk this weekend. Perhaps you can convince Lauren and Andrew to come on up for a bit of R&R on the lake? Hope to see you while you're here |

YOU AND YOUR FELLOW WOKERS ARE PERHAPS THE ONLY CHANCE THAT SOME OF THESE PEOPLE CAN HAVE SOME ENJOYMENT OUT OF THEIR LIFE AND THAT THIER CHILDREN MIGHT HAVE A SHOT AT A BETTER LIFE. BUCK UP! OTHERWISE THINGS ON THE HOME FRONT ARE PRETTY MUCH THE SAME EXCEPT, AS YOU KNOW, RICHARD & EMMA PLAN TO MOVE TO NY. I DON'T THINK SHE WILL HAVE ANY TROUBLE FINDING A JOB AND RICHARD CAN NOW SEE WHAT HE IS WORTH IN THE REAL WORLD. HE HAS THE TOOLS, TEMPERMENT & SMARTS TO LAND A DECENT JOB NOT NECESSARILY IN INSURANCE. WE ALL MISS YOU AND ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING IN A FEW MONTHS. LOVE DAD. |

| 10th February 2006 Lauren | Electrons are people too - From: The Electronic Daughter I feel your pain, Erica. Email and blogging are my primary means of communication with a lot of people too. It's no substitute for face to face contact, of course, but this globe-spanning lifestyle does have its advantages. And it does make those face to face encounters even more special. |

| 25th January 2006 anonymous | Directions to Aceh from NYC - From: The Electronic Daughter Wow, that kind of journey requires the x-large size xanax (maybe two)! Oh, I can't help but notice that Goen is working a pretty cute smile (-: And you look great, disco diva, even in electronic form. Miss you much. |
| 25th January 2006 egipsey | 35 hrs...3hrs - From: The Electronic Daughter Hi Steve, I'm on a dial-up connection. My guess is the govt. regulations prohibit other carriers from coming in. SoCo (is that the NY'er term for SC?) may not be as far as Aceh, but wherever you are, if you have to get on a plane to get home, it feels far. no matter if it's 3 hrs or 35 hrs. |
| 24th January 2006 Kathie | Phone Call - From: The Electronic Daughter I wish I could take that 35 hour flight to ride an elephant with you :) But I am thankful that we were able to talk. You are always in my thoughts! |
| 24th January 2006 Cousin S | - From: The Electronic Daughter And I thought I was disconnected living in SoCo! Good to hear they're going with the CB radio - old technology, but basic, not too easy to break. Just need to put those tall antennae towers to work, install a couple repeaters. Is your Internet via a dialup connection or something else? Love - S,C,J,N,&C |
| 24th January 2006 mom | italian sunday dinner? - From: The Electronic Daughter hmmn where's the wine, pasta and connoli's? just kidding , but i bet not every one was trying to talk at the same time. |

| 16th January 2006 Andrew J | Digging the Blog! - From: The NGO Apprentice Hey Erica, Thanks for doing such a great blog! I have not seen a better answer the perennial question of “So, what exactly do you aid workers do?” than this entry. I know that someday you will find fresh brewed decaffeinated coffee. Although I can’t be of much help since I am devoted to the turbo-caffeinated beans of Africa! Best, Andrew |
| 15th January 2006 mom | next time look at the floor - From: Haircut for Humanity when you notice people stare they know not, you lost a foot of hair you see, it's because you shine long hair or short, your simly devine |

| 12th January 2006 Lauren | Fishbones - From: Top New Inventions in Banda Aceh Whenever Andrew grills a particularly bony fish, like mackerel, we eat it with chopsticks because it's easier to pick the meat off the bone. It slides right off. Yum. Love the photos. Tres Glamorous. |
| 12th January 2006 Lisa | Bathing in the barrel - From: Top New Inventions in Banda Aceh Hola! I'm so glad to see a picture of the "barrel". I couldn't stop laughing after talking to you the other day...I was picturing you like a cartoon character dipping yourself in and out of the "barrel" for your daily bathing routine! | 8th January 2006 Lauren McLaughlin | Thanks for the 411 - From: The NGO Apprentice A ha. I knew what your job entailed vaguely. Thanks for the details. Sounds like it's going well there. But my word, what a big expansion in manpower your organization had all of a sudden. That can't be easy to manage. |
| 7th January 2006 dad | about time - From: The NGO Apprentice It appears that you are getting a handle on the job and that you are using all the skills learned to date and are learning new ones, great. It appears that you have in your boss, someone that you can aid you in your job. I'm still going to the gym, but took time out, 2 weeks, for Christmas and when I went back to the gym I gained 7 pounds. There is something wrong with this. We all missed you during the holidays, but you were in our thoughts. Lots of love, dad |
| 7th January 2006 linda depiero | for Muhammad Thalal - From: Ground Zero Times 100 thank you for your informative comment. Real gold or not you both look wonderful and your bride is very beautiful. i send you congratulations and wishes for a happy life together. |
| 6th January 2006 Ann-Kristin. | - From: The NGO Apprentice Hey lady, Senid sent me the link (naturally...) to your site - it is so great and fun. I promise when I get back from my Africa trip I will chat with you from home - that is when I will get a cable installed at home, and we can Skype. You look healthy despite the Acehnese staple! I miss you here - the office is not the same. Take care, AK. |
| 6th January 2006 Thalal Aceh | No class distiction at all - From: Ground Zero Times 100 Hahaha..truly there was no true gold on the bride. We just use imitation golds which can be found easily and very-very cheap at the local market. All Acehnese(except people in six districts) use this kind of clothes for the wedding. Aceh Province consists of around eight ethnics which have different languages and cultures. I am a part of the biggest ethnic living which dominates Aceh Besar, Banda Aceh, the North Coast except a part of east Aceh, and along the west coast except half of south Aceh. People live in Simeulue island, Central Aceh, and districts in South-East Aceh really have their own cultures and languages. |
| 6th January 2006 egipsey | Thanks for the encouragement! xo Erica - From: The NGO Apprentice |

| 31st December 2005 Lauren McLaughlin | - From: Ground Zero Times 100 Hey Erica! I can't believe you've had a blog all this time and I didn't know. Thanks so much for starting it so I can follow your fascinating experiences there. What a poignant picture of tragedy and triumph you've painted so far. I'll be sure to check in regularly and blog you in my next entry of Liquid Logic. Keep up the good work, darling. |
| 29th December 2005 Melissa | look what you started - From: The Fun Police Issue a Warning so does this official letter announcement have anything to do with the parties that you have been rumored to be throwing down there? some crazy thanksgiving feast, and Christmas shing-ding, etc.? I think the beach sounds like a perfect spot. Maybe you can try to get the suite this time with the king size feather bed. :) have fun! |
| 27th December 2005 egipsey | No hook-ups happening at this wedding - From: Ground Zero Times 100 i'm still sketchy on the details of weddings/marriages here. this is actually the third ceremony this couple has had - the entire village came to this party..about 300 people. all guests eat/socialize separately (men from women). it was a very colorful and interesting event to attend. all the locals, women especially, were so welcoming and warm to me. |
| 27th December 2005 egipsey | if it sheds like a xmas tree, it must be - From: "Island of Misfits" Christmas Party i knew you would correct me on the type of tree. yes, i guess it's not a palm. it's shedding all over my damn floor though, just like a real xmas tree...it's going back in the courtyard tomorrow! |
| 27th December 2005 r.depiero@comcast.net | bridal gown - From: Ground Zero Times 100 is that gold on the bride? if so does that signify a class distinction? very beautiful |
| 21st December 2005 r.depiero@comcast.net | "palm tree" - From: "Island of Misfits" Christmas Party actually your christmass tree makes charlie brown's tree look like the tree at the white house. but it is a very "sweet" tree and the decorations are very very nice. actually i think it's a scheferlera (not sure of the spelling) plant. |
| 13th December 2005 linda | - From: Barefoot (and smoking) in the Kitchen more pictures please use that camera xo |
