March 8th 2006

On 5th March (Happy Birthday Sis!) we got our bags packed again and said our goodbyes to Lao. We've been here less than a fortnight but made our way from the far north to the very south, getting in a lot of sites on the way. I'm quite sad at only having stayed one night at Dhon Kon. The islands here are so beautiful, i could have spent a week in my hammock just watching the world go by. A slowboat took us to a packed tuk tuk which started to negotiate the rocky roads on our journey to Cambodia. Felt sorry for the old scotsman who was up on the roof for the journey alongside our bags, although i think it was his own choice - the crazy cat. By the time we were crossing ... read more

March 4th 2006

There was no messing around in Pakse (ok, maybe a bit of messing about -we’re still unorganized students at heart) as we headed right towards the border to Si Phan Don, otherwise known as Four Thousand Islands. We had to get a riverboat to our island of choice, Don Khon, with the helpful guidance of a little kid sat at the front of the boat signaling the safest route to his dad who was tackling the steering. It’s all stilted wooden bungalows for accommodation here - I was sharing a double bed with Mike (another nervous night!) whilst Jonny was on his own. In front of our bungalow were hammocks which we just chilled out in and watched the passing boats, before heading off on another cycling tour! This one was far more interesting for scenery ... read more

So we did kayak here in the end!! We got a truck to our start point on the Mekong river then set off on a little practice run. I was soon pulled up by the instructor tho. He called me over and said 'no professionals'. i said 'i'm not a professional'. he said 'well you should be!' in the end they paired me with smith and asked me to show him the ropes, whilst jonny the intrepid explorer sped off into the distance. Before lunch by the river we faced our one and only set of rapids. Apparently there is some grading system for the intensity of rapids, and this was only a grade 1. Still looked pretty angry from where i was sat on the rocks, so it was great news when the instructor said ... read more

February 28th 2006

Ok guys, so we’ve upped sticks again and made our way to the small town of Vang Vieng. The journey here was noteworthy mainly for Jonny getting sick and almost throwing up on the Canadian girl he was sat next to. He claims that it was a result of the winding roads we were driving on, up and down mountains for about 6 hours. Personally think the 6 bottles of Beer Lao he had the night before didn’t really help the situation! Vang vieng is quite a big spot for backpackers now it seems. We keep spotting people we were on the slowboat with and everyone seems to be continuing on the same route as us. Also saw the guy who Safari Phil moved in with in third year at Sheffield Uni just outside our guesthouse ... read more

Hey guys, this message is coming fresh from the old town of Luang Prabang, which is pretty central in Lao. It was last Tuesday when we said our emotional goodbyes to Chiang Mai. It has definitely been the favourite place i have visited so far, and apparently it makes it into Jonny's top 3! the people were so genuinely friendly and there was so much to see and do, both at day and night. We had a fair old trek further north to eventually get to the border crossing, and took a small riverboat to eventually end up in Laos. We stayed the night in Huay Xai, a very sleepy town consisting of basically one street. We managed to get our first taste of Beer Lao, which deserves the title of the best in Southeast Asia. ... read more

Woke up ready and raring to go for 3 days of spectacular trekking! There were ten of us there in total. Me, mike and jonny were representing for EN-GER-LAND! There was a German girl called Alex, Astrid and Evelyn from Holland, Jonathan and Sandra from Sweden and finally two Aussies, Matt and Sheridan. They were all around our age and so we had loads to chat about as we headed off, first to the local market. Here it was where our guide Dang and his crew bought some food for the evening meal. We then drove on an hour or so to our start point. The first leg of the journey was in the baking heat going up a very steep hill on some sandy paths. It was probably only 20 minutes but felt like a ... read more

February 16th 2006

Hey there again guys, hope you're all sweet. Time to update u on our goings on once more. Woke up from our hectic night on Wednesday around midday to find Jonny had already shot off to see the sights on his lonesome - the cheeky sod! Myself and Mike then made it our mission to try and polish off the 'big guns' of temples in record-quick time. Wat Phra Sing was the first stop. On first impressions I'd say it was a perfect example of Lanna architecture (Lonely Planet, 2004) Inside were some incredibly detailed murals depicting the life of the last Buddha from what I could tell. Beside the temple was a beautiful garden with the 'trees of sage and wisdom'. All around were printed thought-provoking messages such as 'peace is the highest bliss' and ... read more

Happy Valentines Day one and all! Getting into the spirit of things we went to have breakfast at the 'In Love' cafe, very romantic! Stayed at a biker-themed hostel in Phitsanulok (Phi-lok if you're street). Not much going on here - had a quiet day at the park and strolling through markets yesterday - so today we were back on the trains going north to Chiang Mai. We did have time for a tour of another market today but it wasn't that pleasant. There was an entire row of stalls selling whole pigs heads, chicken feet and live fish, all accompanied by flies buzzing around and a pretty awful stench! hope you veggies out there are enjoying this! I'd say it was enough to turn me vegetarian, but i'd be lying. nothing could do that, meat ... read more

February 12th 2006

Well kids, had the first experience of train travel in Thailand yesterday and it was definitely an experience for shizzle. There was a huge surge for seats and it was hard to compete with a giant rucksack on my back. Glad I managed to get one; mike and jonny lucked out so had to be constantly on the move in the aisle as women were parading up and down the length of the train selling drinks and some suspect foods. All the windows were open to help make the trip bareable, although it wasn't so great when the brakes overheated and smoked filled the whole carriage! Got lucky when we arrived at Ayuthaya as the owner of a hostel was driving passed in her jeep. We hopped in the back then cruised to the P U ... read more

Except we didn't wake up til 1pm (where was our alarm Dan?!). There was in fact only one Grand Palace to view, but the beds at our new hostel, the 'atHome' guest house, were so comfy that we caught up on a fair bit of sleep! We got a tuk-tuk to race us to the Grand Palace pronto. By now we were bartering (sauce!!) with those scammers so 60 baht became 20. When we got there we realised that they were not letting people in who were wearing shorts - that's one bit of advice Lonely Planet forgot!! Fortunately we could hire some rather foxy elasticated joggers. The Grand Palace is the former royal residence which is now only used for ceremonial occassions such as Coronation Day. A waste if you ask me because i was ... read more
