July 16, 2011 WHITEHORSE TO DESTRUCTION BAY Shortly after leaving Whitehorse we began seeing the majesty and grandeur of the highest mountains in Yukon. They rose on our left and became more magnificent as we approached Haines Junction and the Visitors Centre for Kluane National Park. In the Centre we learned about the highest peak in Canada, Mt. Logan, which towers up to 19,550 ft. It is in such an isolated section of the park only the hardiest adventurers will ever see it. There are massive icefields and glaciers in the park, the smaller of which can be seen from the highway. Several of our fellow-travelers saw grizzlies today, but all we saw were little ground-squirrels. Destruction Bay is on the west side of Kluane Lake where it was originally a construction camp for the building ... read more

July 15, 2011 SKAGWAY TO WHITEHORSE Before leaving Skagway we had opportunity to do a little shopping (for souvenirs) and visit a few more points of interest around town. Our drive out of Skagway took us UP the long 9% grade that we came down on our way into town and across the border into Canada again. We were able to catch a few more interesting pictures of glacier fed lakes. The wildflowers along the roadside were also a beautiful sight. I kept looking for a photo opportunity with masses of wildflowers in the foreground and the mountains behind, but trees kept getting in the way! In Whitehorse the group was scheduled to attend the “Frantic Follies Vaudeville Revue” but we chose to skip that and have a quiet evening in our “home away from home”. ... read more

July 14, 2011 – LEISURE DAY IN SKAGWAY Three things happened today. First we went up on Dyea Way to get an overview of Skagway and some pictures of the layout of the city. It is long and narrow with the waterfront being only five blocks wide. The Skagway River valley is very narrow and hemmed in by almost vertical rock walls. The view from up on the hill gave great perspective to the town. Second, we visited the Gold Rush Cemetery which was used for only a few years from 1897 until just after the turn of the century. By then it was full! Most of the grave markers are for adults in their 20s, 30s, and 40s and a number of children. Most interesting are the graves for the two most famous (or infamous) ... read more

July 13, 2011 - JUNEAU, AK. Today we traveled to Juneau aboard the Fjordland, a new 65-foot, state-of-the-art, fast-hulled catamaran specially designed for the waters of the Lynn Canal. This was a long day, leaving Skagway at 8 am and heading south through Lynn Canal, the continent’s longest and deepest glacial fjord. Lynn Canal stretches over 100 miles long and is over 2,000 ft. deep. Along the way our ship’s captain went out of his way to bring us close to any wildlife we saw along the way. Throughout the day we were able to view Dolphins, Humpback Whales, Bald Eagles, Stellar sea lions, but no mountain sheep!! A bus met us just outside Juneau and took us on a tour of the city before dropping us off for 3 hours to do our own exploring ... read more

July 12, 2011 SKAGWAY – WHITE PASS AND YUKON RAILROAD. Against all odds, this iron trail was born of the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush and built through some of the North’s most ruggedly beautiful terrain. The building of the White Pass and Yukon Route was the engineering marvel of its time. Completed in 1900 with British financing, Canadian contracting and American engineering, it hauled miners and supplies over the 3,000 foot pass between Skagway and the Yukon. Today’s train was pulled by 3 diesel engines and was 15 cars long taking us over the most scenic portion of the line, viewing spectacular panoramas of the Sawtooth Mountains and the Lynn Canal, passing cascading waterfalls, craggy mountainsides and steep cliffs. Interesting sights included several trestle bridges, two tunnels carved out of solid rock, remnants of the original ... read more

July 11, 2011 – TESLIN, YK TO SKAGWAY, AK “ALASKA ISN’T JUST A PLACE YOU VISIT, IT’S A FEELING YOU EXPERIENCE, AND REMEMBER FOR A LIFETIME.” This was one of the most beautiful days on our trip thus far. The scenery was so dramatic words cannot do it justice and the camera just cannot capture the scope of its majesty. Once again we were blessed with beautiful weather – warm and sunny with clear skies, so we were able to see all the mountains along the way. Driving by the lakes the water was not only an interesting green colour from glacier water – but also still enough to capture some lovely reflections as well. Coming down into Skagway the highway has a long 9% grade for 11 miles. Halfway down we cross into Alaska and ... read more

July 10, 2011 – WATSON LAKE, YT TO TESLIN, YT When we woke up this morning the rain had passed and we were fortunate to have another beautiful day with sunshine and interesting cloud formations in the sky which adds so much to the pictures. It was a lovely drive today with many interesting stops along the way. We pulled off the road at Rancheria Falls where we enjoyed a walk through the woods to the falls. Actually, coming from BC, we were not too impressed with what they called “falls”!! However, it was a good place to stop for a bite of lunch in our rigs. At another pull out we met up with a young couple who are biking from Alaska to the tip of Argentina, taking a year and a half to do ... read more

July 7, 2011 - DAWSON CREEK TO FT. NELSON As part of our Orientation we were asked to get together with two or three other rigs and travel together, keeping in touch with our CB radios. Every unit has been assigned a number and we refer to that number when leaving or checking in at the next camp, or talking to each other along the road. This is the way George (our leader) will keep track of us all. We joined up with two other couples, Jim & Joanne Fletter from Sacramento, CA, and Don & Sharon Richardson from Orleans, IN. As we were heading out that first morning, the guys were having fun with their CB’s making sure they worked properly and we could hear each other. Our drive today was rather mundane. July 9, 2011 – LIARD HOTSPRINGS, BC TO WATSON LAKE, YT. This morning before we left Liard Hotsprings we stopped in at the Lodge and took a few interesting pictures of the Elk Head, the Moose Head and an Albino Bear Cub. As you will see from the pictures, we also had a bit of fun as well!! Our drive today was most interesting. The further north we go the landscape becomes more interesting and spectacular, but the thing that was the highlight of today was the number of animals we saw along the side of the highway. I believe we saw about 6 Black Bears and many Wood Bison. The Bison are calving and one pair we came across was a mother with her newborn calf. The calf was very unstable on his legs, so ... read more

July 8, 2011 – FT. NELSON TO LIARD HOTSPRINGS. Unfortunately we started off in the rain this morning and the clouds hung low over the mountains so we were not able to get clear panoramic views. This was one of the more picturesque drives as the road climbed over the Rocky Mountains or paralleled rivers and lakes. There are many signs along the way warning about the danger of wildlife on the road (Moose; Elk; Bear; Bison). Unfortunately, the only wildlife we saw today was a Black Bear on the side of the road enjoying the fresh green grass. The road was rougher today with lots of repair spots consisting of a load of gravel dust poured on a strip of oil. That makes for a lot of dust and a lot of rocks thrown up ... read more
