Napoli, city of contrasts! On our last vacation time before we headed home, we ventured to southern Italy. Forewarned that, "...evil lurking at every corner--wenches, gigolos, and confidence men abound!" :) But it was not too sketchy, and a lot of it was very beautiful. Early in the morning, we embarked on the first of two trains to reach our destination. The regional trains are much cheaper, so we took one from Bomarzo to Roma, and then a few hours later from Roma to Napoli stopping frequently on the way. On the train there were some children sitting across the aisle from us. One little boy with an extremely stretchy face made the most crazy expressions. Both kids were kinda pudgy even though their parents were slim and kid with the elastic face was eating smarties, ... read more

December 31st 2011

Greetings from La Rocchetta as 2011 is ending. The future is finally here. Sorry it has been so long since we were able to publish a blog, but we spent the middle of the month in Rome, and the Christmas season with no computer access, so we'll just combine it all into one big blog entry. After our last entry, we spent five days in Rome, taking in all the sights we could, eating kebabs from friendly egyptians and saying hello to claudio's daughter in law and grandchildren. We found a little hostel right near the railroad run by some eastern europeans who drank a lot by themselves and made origami christmas ornaments. No kitchen at this one so the italian cuisine was a bit more limited, but we got by after finding the korean store ... read more

December 2nd 2011

It's December in La Rocchetta, and with the olives long gone, we have been focused on a bunch of different jobs to keep busy in between vacations. We spent the first week back from Firenze preparing the winter garden, which took some work as you can see from the before and after photos. Most of the beds were choked with the weeds and old plant debris, as well as the soaker hoses that kept it fed during the summer. We pulled out and repaired the hoses (with duct tape!), which took some doing with only two of us handling the four pronged 60ft. hoses. After that we spent some time going over the beds with spade, hoe, rake and by hand to pull out all the roots, weeds, dead tomatoes, rocks, and green matter we could ... read more

Just got back from Florence! After working hard on the olive harvest Dom and I went to visit one of my favorite cities in Italia. We tried to couch surf, but I think it may be a bit harder for a couple to find a place to stay than a couple'a cute girls (aka me and Erika) to find a place to surf. It worked out really well though, we ended up staying about two blocks from IL DUOMO! on via cavour at this really nice and affordable hostel. The train ride was so beautiful! It was about two and a half hours of italian countryside and we were able to spot the olive trees quite easily. :) The hostel had a kitchen so we went to il mercato and got some pasta and wine. Its ... read more

Hey Y'all, We arrived in La Rocchetta about a week ago and what an amazing week its been! When we first arrived we were dazzled by the beautiful country side. My Italian is coming back slowly and I was able to order a coffee while waiting for Michelle to pick us up at the train station in Orte. She drove us to her beautiful home in Lazzio near Bomarzo. We met her and Claudio's amazing family and with their help have picked SO MANY olives! :) First we cleared the space around the trees of weeds; Dom weedwacked and I battled with many a thorn bush til it was clear enough for us to put nets down to catch the olives. Once the ground around the trees was clear, we netted it and started picking. You ... read more

Hi Everyone! We're SO FULL right now, just ate amazingly delicious early thanksgiving dinner with more pies than you can even imagine (two pecan since it won the vote by a landslide, though some say the election was fixed) two roast ducks, etouffee and a turkey among so many other amazing dishes. Not too much time to write right now but this is the address of the blog we will hopefully be writing so all y'all can keep up with us til we get back to New Orleans after our overseas WWOOFing adventure. Traveling to NYC tomorrow and going to fly out from there on Wednesday for Italia via Dublin. :) Love!... read more
