Carnival in Sesimbra

The Carnival is in full swing now in Sesimbra. I had thought that Lisbon would be busy and there would be a carnival of some sort but no. Sesimbra is one of 5 or 6 towns in Portugal that has the parades and parties that would indicate the presence of a real carnival spirit. Stand to reason. Portugal and Brazil seem to have some ties that are not as visible as the language.Yesterday was the parade

Once in Malabo I will be shuttled to a hotel probably the Tropicana again and try to get a room where it will be silent so I can sleep. Then on Sunday I have the whole day to kill before being taken to the airport for my 10.30 PM flight to Lisb

13 November 2011 MongomoWell it has proven that this is the rainy season with rain every day and most nights for the last 3 or 4 days. And this after teasing us with the outlook of an early end with sunny days and no rain for several days. Oh well. It is the rainy season for a reason. And as you can see from the date it is Sunday again. This time there are no trips into town planned...there was

30 October 2011 MongomoWell here we are again. Another Sunday afternoon in EG and I am about to head into town to have another dose of culture Mongomo style. One of the other contractors has a serious need for a new set of boots no one else want to go to town so I am tagging along. We will most likely have a drink somewhere though I am shifting to cokes fantas and limiting my beer intake. Se

The call was not unexpected only inopportune. We were in the middle of setting up the house we just rented...choosing furniture arranging the purchase and installation of a new kitchen buying furniture and last but not least trying to get the paperwork on the new address. But I had agreed to come out of retirement to help out with the HVAC project on the Presidential Library in Mongomo Equat

9 July 2011 AlmoinhaWell I managed to get diving on Thursday. So everyone join in and sing to the tune of Sound of Music...My gills are alive I finally went diving yada yada yadaI arrived at the Anthia Diving Center and started to get my gear sorted out and to try on the semidry suit that I would need. I discussed the amount of lead I would need for the suit I was going to use. I chose

6 July 2011 AlmoinhaWhile I was away at school our household increased in size. No nobody gained weight we took a foster dog for a few weeks from the local animal shelter. He was an older dog and had been reasonably trained. What a sweet pup. I returned him to the shelter last week with the help of some new friends here Charlie and Julie. That evening the dog made the trip to his new home in

29 June 2011 LisbonWell it has been 11 days since I last added anything to this blog so I guess I am well overdue. The hotel I chose to stay in was the cheapest that had individual rooms with shared baths. Some of the hostels with shared rooms were more expensive. At 18 per night the Residencial Mar dos Aores is a bargain but it is pretty small and very basic. Noise is something that I am b

Okay Okay...Another few weeks have past and we have been doing lots of different things. Paperwork to legalize our status here in Portugal has been the most pressing but has to be done. Beyond that we have rented a car and traveled around looking at areas in general and some properties that looked interesting on the net.The landscape is pretty awe inspiring. We looked at a property that overlook

The waves gently lap the shore the water is cold and clear and the bikinis are small. What more can a guy ask for Oh and the beer tastes good. A day at the beach gave us a bit of rest and now we are ready to attack the big stuff...Lisbon tomorrow bureaucratic paperwork Wednesday and then house hunting to the no

30 May 2011 MadridI am sitting in the Madrid airport killing time right now. I had to return our rental car so I just did that. Now I am waiting for a flight that is 5 hours away to take me to Lisbon where I will catch a bus then a ferry and then another bus so I can walk the last 2 kms home. This is once that public transport is not really convenient but at least it is there. The drive from our

23 May 2011 SesimbraWell. I guess I have delayed writing this for as long as I can justify. It is not like I am really busy or anything. Just getting settled into a new rhythm is taking longer than I thought. I do want to say that travel by cruise ship is much nicer than travel by airline I will now always try to travel in this manner if the corresponding flight is longer than a few hours and the

and life goes on...

It is ironic how that when things start going wrong time seems to slow to a point that makes you wonder why in hell you don't do something to change the outcome so that you don't hurt yourself. Why would this be important you ask... Well right now I am not sure if my hip or my ego has the largest bruise. Now I am not normally interested in bruised egos. Not yours not mine. But Saturday morni

Victoria 16 MarchYep you read that right. We are now a month further and back home. A combination of too much happening and too little connection to the internet. While I did file short notes about where I was and what was happening I did not get it together to really put anything down and get it posted. So here goes late but not lost...Our friends in Zwolle had the attic ready for us to move

Quiet well appointed and central to what we needed to do both on our second day and later in the trip. Fresh bread was waiting in a basket on the terrace when we got out of bed.
Amerongen 3 February 2010...The flight was uneventful except for the 4 year old Indian girl who screamed for what seemed like 6 of the 9.5 hours. Fortunately there were lots of empty seats on the plane so that escape was possible. Why isn't there a soundproof space called kiddyclass on each plane On the upside we had German beer with dinnerAfter the flight everything went smoothly...unt
