Slept in a little this morning so we could be refreshed for our last full day in Norway. We walked down to the Lillehammer city center for a little shopping, but didn't find much so it was a short trip. We decided to check out the 1994 Olympic park... which was kind of a let down (I guess it has been 20 years!) We drove over to the Olympic park and expected to find some signs/information/history - but didn't find anything! We aren't even sure we found the torch (we did take a picture of something in the Olympic park that we are guessing was it)! We then drove up to the top of the ski jump hill, which was pretty neat and provided a great view. After the Olympic park, we decided to check out ... read more

Greetings from Lillehammer! If you have been following along the itinerary, you would know this is not our original destination for this evening! :) Here's the story... We woke up in Flam and had a nice breakfast at the hotel and enjoyed a quick walk around the little wharf. We knew we had a long drive ahead, so we hit the road to Geirangerfjord. The drive started out really nice- we took another ferry and the scenery along the Sofnedjord was lovely. Well, the further we drove, the snowier and snowier it got! We reached the point where we were supposed to turn to go to Geiranger, but the road was closed! More like the road didn't exist - there was at least 10 Feet of snow on the road! After trying to sort things out ... read more

We left Bergen this morning around 10:30am... We had a little bit of a late start after last night and then grabbing breakfast at the hotel :) The drive to Flam was supposed to take about 2.5 hours, but after the recommendation from "Johnny" our bartender last night, we decided to take the scenic route! It ended up only adding about an hour to our trip, and the views along the fjord were worth it! As we were driving along those narrow windy roads, we came to a brief standstill when two trucks were trying to pass each other on a tiny stretch of road barely big enough for one of them! The other truck had to go into reverse until the road widened a bit! We stopped in Voss, a little town on the way ... read more

Since we arrived home kind of late last night/this morning, I'm just now getting to the blog update :) We woke up to a light misty rain and cooler temps in Bergen yesterday morning. However, after a quick breakfast at the hotel, we headed out to do some exploring of Bergen. We stopped in a few shops, but it was mostly just tourist stuff, not the cool handmade art and pottery that we were looking for! Once the fog lifted a little bit, we were able to take a ride up to the top of Mount Floyen, which proved spectacular views of Bergen. The ride up was on a furnicular, which was kind of like a train on a 25 degree angle. It was pretty neat! At the top there were several paved trails so we ... read more

Well, since we were the only guests at the hotel last night, what better way to wake up to have breakfast for 2 served for you? :) After eating sliced ham 5 different ways (at least we are pretty sure that's what it was - we avoided the liverworst paste) - we headed out for our morning hike at Lake Bondhus. It didn't disappoint! The view of the mountains reflecting in the lake was spectacular! After a 4 mile round trip hike, it was time to head to our destination for the next two days - Bergen (on the west coast of Norway). The drive was supposed to take 3 hours, but after realizing we forgot to return the hotel keys, we had to backtrack a bit to the hotel. Turns out we didn't really need ... read more

The agenda for today included a hike up from our hotel to the top of Pulpit Rock (Priekestolen). We started the hike around 9:30am - which turned out to be just the right time because we were one of the first few groups up there, and judging from all of the people we passed on the way down, it was going to be crowded! The hike was around 5.5 miles round trip - with a 1600 ft elevation gain! It was worth it though! The views were amazing! We were almost brave enough to get to the edge and look over :) After about 20 minutes at the summit, we headed back down and enjoyed a Norwegian ice cream cone! It was then time to start the drive to our hotel for the night just outside ... read more

Too exhausted last night to go down to the lobby to post - so yesterday's entry comes this morning! Woke up very early this morning to catch our flight from Stockholm to Oslo! The walk to the train station this morning was beautiful so I grabbed a few last minute pictures. We landed in Oslo at 10:30am and were at the car rental counter by 11. And it turned out to be our lucky day because we were upgraded from an "economy" rental to a BMW complete with built in GPS! :) We programmed in our destination and hit the road. The drive took a little longer than we thought - we didn't even make it to Preikestolen Hotel until after 8. But, the drive here was beautiful! We passed numerous lakes, mountains, went through at ... read more

Woke up this morning with surprisingly little jet-lag - we have adjusted to being 8 hours ahead pretty well! After a good breakfast at the hotel, we headed out (in the rain) to a place called Saluhall, which is a big indoor market that had lots of yummy looking food (like the market we went to in Ireland). We then headed over to the Vasa museum, which was pretty awesome! The Vasa is a Viking ship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was pulled from the harbor in Stockholm in the 1960s. It has been undergoing restoration ever since! It was a very cool museum. All of the work that has gone into preserving it is amazing! After the Vasa museum we walked back over to Gamla Stan for lunch at Max Burger, ... read more

Hello from Stockholm! We arrived in Sweden around 12:30pm local time. Both of us were able to get about 2 1/2 hours combined on the flights over here, so we were ready to roll once we arrived at our hotel (thanks to Kelly's awesome navigation skills!) ;) After checking into our Nordic-Viking themed hotel (not gonna lie it's a little creepy but it was highly recommended!) we ventured out to explore Gamla Stan, or "old town" Stockholm. After stopping for a quick lunch (salmon sandwiches) and the best chai latte Kelly has ever had in her life, we walked to the Kungstradgarden, which was lined with cherry blossom trees. We walked along the harbor a bit (although Stockholm is on one of several islands so we will see more harbor tomorrow). We did catch a glimpse ... read more
