Mumbai and Home 8th to 11th November An early morning flight from a very nice Aurangabad airport took us back to Mumbai for our last 3 days. Neither of us was sure what we would make of Mumbai. would it be just another very large , dirty etc Indian city? Well we were meeting up with (very young) Aunt and Uncle, Jim and Hilary, and you can't come all this way and not spend some time in the Financial/ Bollywood capital of India, now can you?? Well we were actually VERY impressed with the place. Hotel Residency in the Fort area was, very clean and comfortable and well situated for mad people like us who like to walk to the main sites (even in 38C)!! The staff were great, though we were a little concerned ... read more

Aurangabad 4th to 8th November Into our last week now, we chickened out of the very dubious looking bus to Aurangabad (5 hour trip) and were lucky enough to get A/C Chair seats on the train instead. As OAP's we got tickets for the 3.5 hour journey for about £4....that's right for the two of us. The train was 30 mins late arriving but hey....... Aurangabad was everything we feared it would be....... OH NO!!! and the hotel, though very nice is way out and away from everything except there is a proper, western-type supermarket next door. Just as well as we nearly died trying to cross the road to another one!! David says we have to pace ourselves so we did very little on Friday when we got there. On Saturday we visited a look-alike ... read more

Nasik 1st to 4th November We were really quite sad to leave Goa and the few friends we had made there. Brendan (from London) was a really nice chap and was the font of all knowledge about the place. He had been there a couple of times already and was being joined by his son later in the week. He had already booked to go back again in spring. Anthy's turned out to be a real gem of a place and the staff were so nice. We spent loads of time chatting the waiters, Raj and Mishal who were Nepalese and even the chef came out after work for a chat on our last evening.( We won't miss old Mr Benidorm and his many coloured thongs though...... not a great look that Borat!!!!) Got to the ... read more

It's All a Bit Slower in Goa. 22nd Oct to1st November We eventually heard that we were on the 6.25am train from Hospet to Madgoan, thank goodness. It was more than an hour late arriving but at least we had got seats. The train had actually started at Ara (Calcutta) and some poor souls had already been on the train for 40 hours by the time we got on. People were just waking up so finding our seats was a bit of a joke amonst all those beds and blankets. Fortunately we managed to squeeze in to a compartment with a young Isreali couple who were really friendly, so the 7 hours to Goa passed quite nicely. Like all Indian Railway stations Madgoan was a bit of a rugby scrum to get out of but we ... read more

On to Hampi 16th to 22nd October Spent a pleasant evening back at Mamallapuram on Saturday after a long 7 hour drive up the highway from Madurai. Nearly a disaster though, as the police were out in force, (due yet again to the 'elections' ) and were raiding all the cafes without licenses and confiscating their beer..Oh No!!! . Ann, never one to miss a trick, had noted that the good old Buddha Cafe had beer on the menu, and so must be licensed!! Sorted!! Otherwise their might have been 2 very thirsty, not to say cross OAP's in town !!! Muthu picked us up at 3pm for the final trip to Chennai airport and the short hop to Bangaluru. The airport is a hefty 40kms from the city and the traffic was appalling. Exacerbated by ... read more

Madurai 13th /15th October Well we left Kodai on a beautiful day!!! but it was good to see the place bathed in sunshine even if we were leaving!! At least it made the trip down the mountain a little more pleasant than it was on the way up! However it was quite cloudy as we got down onto the plain and stayed that way until the heavens opened later in the evening in Madurai. Seems that Madurai isn't the best place for us as the hotel we had booked denied all knowledge and said they were full. As it happens it was quite a long way out anyway. Muthu managed to find us another hotel, no problems. We were also able to walk to the very impressive and huge Sri Meenkash Temple and saw the ... read more

All was not Peachy in Trichy 8th-10th October 2011 Found out this morning that Wales beat Ireland to get into the semi-finals of the RWC. Yeah!!!!!!!! Best weekend of sport in a long time but sadly we are missing most of it and defintely no rugby here (and no internet connection either so we are really suffering now!!). We have moved futher south again into a less agricultural, more industrial area which is definitely more prosperous and modern (in parts). We saw Levi and Reebok stores and supermarkets as well as the small roadside stalls and markets here and loads of colleges and university campuses outside the towns all very modern.Presumably land is cheaper and with nowhere to go and nothing to do the students are more inclined to study? On the way we stopped ... read more

Kodaikkanal 10th -12th October Stopped off at Dingidul to look at another Rock Fort then on up into the mountains to Kodai. Had a 34 km climb up through a sort of rainforest to get there. After 5 minutes the heavens opened and it poured with rain all the way up a very windy, not to say dangerous, road (which we have to go back down). David had been saying all along that it would be cold up here. I was hoping for just cool. Well it is very cool and damp..... no WET!!.We won't bother buying warm clothes, it isn't that bad and what we have we can layer but the Indians are buying beany hats and ear warmers and putting babies in balaclavas lol !!!! Bet it is really beautiful here when the ... read more

Kumbakonam 8th October 2011 Beginning to struggle to remember what we did on Thursday, other than move from Pondi to Kumbakonam. Oh yes, we stopped at the Nataraja Temple at Chidambaram, which David had read was a private one where only men were allowed, where the Brahmins contrived to part you from large amounts of your hard earned cash and you had to take your shirt off to go in...........none of which turned out to be true!!!. Ann was allowed in, no-one asked for money and you only took your shirt off if you went into the inner sanctum to gaze at the effigy, which as non-Hindhu's we didn't want to do anyway. Normally you wouldn't be allowed in but we think you might be able to pay here. In anycase it was a very ... read more

Pondicherry. 5th October 2011 We had just one night at Pondicherry. We stayed at Hotel Lotus Comfort which lived up to it's name and was very, comfortable that is.We were happy to find that it had free wi-fi and no sooner had we switched on than up pops Jim on Skype. His friend in Mumbai had been to check out the hotel where we are meeting up when we get there in November. He reported that it was fine and well situated for what we want. He has also apparently invited us all to dinner at his house, so that will be really good too. Although it is quite a big city and a state in it's own right (border crossing and all), there is not a lot of interest other than the beach and the old ... read more
