Hi. I am am David, some people call me DT. I am originally from the UK but have spent the last 14 years in New Zealand. I have been in IT for as long as I can remember. Christmas 2006 I decided I had had enough of the daily grind and that it was time to have an adventure. A scary thought at first but actually really easy to do. Being single and no kids obviously helps though.

I am going to go to South America and the first thing I will do is study Spanish. So hopefully I will soon be able to add entries in Spanish to my blogs. First of all though I will be heading back to the UK and then off for a month mountain biking in Northern Spain....

To my friends and family I will be trying to keep this up to date and I will be making an effort to write stories rather than just banter about what I have been doing. To the people that just stumble across my entries...I hope you get something out of it too.

"I can see it", shouted Clay. Suddenly there was great excitement in the whole group as we followed our way along a path that led down a rough path surrounded by thick bush that reminded me a little of New Zealand. I was at the back as usual nursing my left knee that was complaining bitterly about going downhill. The view we were all holding our breath for was our first site of Machu Picchu and there it was in the distance. We were a group of 8, from the US, UK and Holland, and our guide Will. This was day 4 of our 5 day trek that led to the base of Salkantay, then down into the high jungle and ending up at what had just recently become one of the new 7 wonders of ... read more

Dear all, Just a quick note to say thanks to those of you that emailed me and sent me texts. I am fine as are most people living in Lima. The city was largely unaffected by the quake. Unfortunately Ica, Pisco and the surrounding areas have been very badly effected. many people dead and many homeless. Aftershocks continue to haunt us and we have been told to expect shocks to continue for many days yet. Each time one hits people look at each other and prepare to run for cover. Now when a large lorry goes by my first thought is about it being another quake. But this is little to worry about compared with those living south of here. David... read more

Tititrek offer walks, excursions and guided treks around Peru. Victor and Jesus are great guys and have a real love of this amazing country. Lilly, Leandro and I set off on one their trips to visit Huacachina and Pampa Galera. The organised trip was for the weekend only but we decided to extend it so we could visit Nazca and see the famous Nazca lines. Huacachina is an oasis just east of the town of Ica. The trip from Lima takes you south on the Pan American Highway, a road that stretches all the way along the east coast of South America. The road follows the coast for a while before going inland as you approach Ica. As you head south and east the skies clear and it gets warm, a welcome relief after the ... read more

Bienvenido a Peru! Today is Sunday 12th August 2007 it’s another cold and, as usual, foggy winter’s day in Lima. Outside I can hear the two-tone whistle being blown by a man pushing a hand cart collecting scrap metal from the houses and apartments. Its hard to believe that its been 2 months and 12 days since I arrived. My nephew arrives here on Tuesday and I will be meeting him at the airport. He is going to spending a month here travelling around this amazing country. I find myself casting my mind back to when I arrived. It’s a good moment to reflect and write about my first few days in Lima and my first impressions. Peru was to be my first stop on my travels within South America and I planned to stay in ... read more

Leaving NZ

March 1st 2007

Last walk up Queen Street I said. Geoff, my best mate, was there as we ambled along the main shopping street in Auckland on Easter Monday, the day I left NZ to begin my mid life OE. I don’t think it really registered with me, or him maybe, what I was saying. I caught myself thinking about those words, about how it will feel in a few months time when I find my heart drifting back to my adopted country, New Zealand. I arrived in the land of the long white cloud, Aotearoa, fourteen years ago on a similarly cloudless clear blue sky day. I had no idea then that I would stay for as long as I have and made this completely amazing country my home. Why I came, the adventures I have had, the ... read more
