Running Race - From: Costa Rican Coffee and Race Issues
As to the race issue you experienced. Costa Rica is not the Urban M-pyre. Go to Limon or Puerto Viejo and you'll understand why Maria Malia made that comment. ............or for that matter head to Mississippi. Glad you enjoyed the place. I've been chere 21 years and am NEVER going back.

Oh, I'm glad to hear that you had such a lovely time in Costa Rica. I feel totally out of the loop since I didn't even know you were going. We should get together when you get back and all settled in because man, I got some stories to tell you. Rach

Super cool! - From: National Park Tour Is For the Birds…And Crocs, And Monkeys…
I love the pics! But... are you *sure* the reason why the details from this trip get fuzzy is because you lost your pen?? Hmm?? Or maybe some citrus-y moonshine was the true culprit?

While you're there, perhaps you can test out Costa Rica's health care system? It wouldn't kill ya to get a second opinion on that busted ankle of yours... :)

The Hot springs at Arenal is simply the best happy hour on the planet. The Cuba Libres are the best. If you are lucky the night sky will be clear and you can see the volcano going off above you.. If you decide to go to Manuel Antonio from the Nicoya Penn, consider taking the early ferry from Puntarenas. Great sight. Have fun, am very jealous

Terrific David, Costa Rica is one of my all time favorite countries. I created and managed collaborative education and research opportunities with 6 Ministers of Health when I worked for Baylor University Medical Center in the 1980's. We did a lot of work in Costa Rica. If you get a chance, be sure to go to Volcán Irazú if you get a chance. The volcano is in the central part of Costa Rica. There is nothing like standing above the rim, looking down at the lava dome, then looking west and seeing the Pacific and looking east and seeing the Gulf of Mexico. I have a lot of find memories of this beautiful country. Have fun.

I love the Taiwan system - From: "It Is Cheaper To Have Your Baby Delivered Than to Have Your Newspaper Delivered"
As an American living here in Taiwan for the past year I have been to the doctor and the hospital many times and I cannot get over the fact how incredibly cheap it is. Also something else to note, is when you need new glasses or contacts you just go to any glasses shop and they will give you a free eye exam, on top of the fact you can get designer glasses made for under $100 usd!!! I cant believe Im actually going to leave all these great benefits.

David - What an amazing trip! Who'd a thunk it?? From traveling to Illinois for a TYD convention back in 93 (swaping times that someone had to sit on the floor of the van b/c their wasn't enough room for all of us, flat tires, food at the truck stops and lots of tequila!) to an international trip of a lifetime (surrounded by important people, fancy toilets and great food!). You've come a LONG way, my friend!! Way to go!!

Names - From: Another great day...
It seems like most the people who have American sounding first names have them because they studied somewhere in the U.S. In "Mark"'s case, he was actually a citizen of the U.S. before he renounced his dual citizenship and moved back to Taiwan to become the head of the National Security Council.

But we got Medicare.... - From: "It Is Cheaper To Have Your Baby Delivered Than to Have Your Newspaper Delivered"
I'm wondering if the 4.55% payroll tax fully funds the system or is it further subsidized by the government and if so what is the extent of the subsidy? Also, how many of the 22.7 million people are actually employed and pay the tax? What happens when they retire and no longer work to pay the tax? Do they still get coverage? On average, most of a person's medical expenses will be in the last years of their life....I'm wondering if they have as many old people as the US does? We just celebrated a 100th Birthday in our family. Her last hospital visit was one day, on February 8th, and cost around $7,000. Hooray for Medicare. We also have the FREE baby thing here too....and it comes with an added BONUS, citizenship.

Allthough I wouldn't expect you to remember since you were only two years old, you have been in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas and Nebraska. You made the trip in the backseat of that all time winner car of ours called the Pacer.
