Mena! Wow, a photo of Mena, that is amazing! We were chased by her through the jungle for the better part of 3 hours near Bukit Lawang. She dropped out of the trees right in the middle of our group, right in front of me. Our local guides had been telling us about her. She was very persistant and give us quite the run for our money over the 3 hours. Very scary at the time, good memories now. :)

Di Great blog, I also enjoyed it. I am trying to assist promotion for Maluku on the net. Have a non- commercial Facebook page named Maluku Spice 2010. Also trying to help promote Sail Banda. I am from Oz but my husbands family are from Maluku. Any chance of displaying your photos under your name especially the one of Lama Village beach?
Memories... I spent four weeks in The Bandas in Aug./Sep. 1998 with my girlfriend Jackui. It was the second leg after Bali of an eleven month trip all throughout the beautiful archipelago of Indonesia. We booked a snazzy first class cabin on the Pelni Ship from Bali to Ambon, two weeks in Pulua Saparua, and then onto Bandaneira. Spent two weeks on Pulau Ai...Snorkelling, lazing on the beach, walking through the nutmeg forest, helping repair the tiny mesjid, meeting the locals, attending a wedding, going out on an amazing fishing trip, swimming with wild dolphins in the deep waters of Gunung Api. etc. The only tourists on the tiny island. Bliss ! Bandaneira was fun to explore. I celebrated my 33rd birthday there. All the other islands of the group are beautiful and interesting. I fell in love with place...Thus my legal surname changed by deed poll in 2002. Sometimes I forget how happy I was when I was there. Thankyou for your site.
The Banda islands are facinating for the history of the place and endlessly interesting, Read Nathaniels Nutmeg while there. I had the good fortune to be reading of the journey from Bandanera to Ai while on a boat doing that journey a fantastic experience The Bandas are not just about Snorkeling for sure.
want to go we are around 70 and after reading your story, it seems that though I love adventure and snorkeling, it will be very dificult to do it.
Are there any more activities to do than snorkeling?
bandas travel what a great read this is, after reading about your journey, i realy felt as though i was with you, and as soon as i can i'm certainly going to go, thank's mate. MARK

thanks a lot,

thanks for the good report Hi,
I am just finishing the book 'Nathaniel's Nutmeg' by Giles Milton. My husband is Dutch and I am America and we live in Bangkok with our two children. After reading this book, I am keen to visit the Banda Islands, to see the forts. As it happens, we also like to snorkel. Your report was very good but makes me think this is a trip to do without young children. Sounds fascinating, but a bit daunting!
Thanks for taking the time to write of your experience. I am having trouble finding information on travel to this part of the world.
Travel with my partner mostly South East Asia with Indonesia being the favorite destination. Currently working in Africa after Previously 5 years in Thailand which made Asia our back yard. Its more hassle to get to Asia now but still worth it we meet up in Indonesia usually and then take off wherever during my vacation periods. We are 50ts and love snorkeling and other wildlife related pass times We do of course do other things as well.Have traveled the world for 35 years initially on ships and a variety of other overseas employment we still love it and will continue as long as we can.[worldma... full info
