We finally made it to a campground with wifi! Until now I was only able to share photos taken on our phones, and as the trip is slowly winding down I want to share some of the highlights so far.... read more

Our first day in the park was pretty relaxed. We got a campsite, and hung out trying to figure out the game plan for the next couple of days. We drove around for a bit, exploring part of the park, then had a campfire and made s'mores. That was the first night that actually felt like we were camping. The next morning we had a quick breakfast then got packed for our hike. We decided North Dome would be our destination. The hike was a little over 11 miles round trip and took about 8 hours, including our time at the top. When we finally reached the summit we were rewarded with breathtaking views of Half Dome and part of Yosemite Valley. We took our time eating lunch at the top, and I even took a ... read more

North America » United States » Wyoming » Jackson Hole July 27th 2014

We kicked off our stay in Jackson Hole with grilled chicken for dinner and an amazing sunset over the Teton mountains. The next day we walked around down town, had lunch, and got suited up for white water rafting. We put in on the Snake River, and had a blast getting soaked! Some of the rapids we went over included Lunch Counter, Big Kahuna, Little Sister Goes Flying, and Box of Fuzzy Kittens. That night we went to the rodeo, which was very exciting to watch. We saw bull ringing, bucking broncos, barrel racing, and cattle herding among other things. Everyone had lots of fun at our first live rodeo. The next day we stopped at the local fire department's annual chicken fry and had a very tasty lunch. After we ate we drove down to ... read more

North America » United States » Wyoming July 18th 2014

Our first stop in Wyoming was Devil's tower, a rock formation that stands a little over 900 feet high. It formed about 3 million years ago, when magma from and underground volcano hardened, and over time the earth eroded around it. We climbed the big rock pile to the base of the tower and enjoyed the view. The next day we headed into Yellowstone, and scored a campsite where you usually have to book at least a year in advance. Our first stop was Hayden Valley, a hotspot for wildlife, where we saw big elk, coyotes, and a huge heard of Bison and their young that crossed the road right in front of us. The second stop was the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone where we saw the gorgeous Upper and Lower falls at Artist Point, and ... read more

North America » United States » South Dakota July 13th 2014

Our first stop in South Dakota was the Badlands, which were beautiful! For miles all we could see were jagged peaks and deep ravines...and it just got better and better the further we drove into the park. The next day we went to a wildlife preserve and saw big horned sheep, mountain goats, arctic and timber wolves, Rocky Mountain elk, reindeer, pronghorns, mountain lions, and black and grizzly bears. After we drove thought the main park we saw 8 bear cubs which were crazy rambunctious, and absolutely adorable! Then we went to Sitting Bull Crystal Caverns, and crawled around 300 feet below ground, surrounded by Dog Tooth Spar crystals. That night we went to Mount Rushmore, where we watched a video in the outdoor amphitheater about how each of the four presidents shaped our country into ... read more

The Dardia's had a great visit with Jen and Kevin in Michigan. We went to the Blue Water Festival at Port Huron, and saw hundreds of sailboats getting ready for the upcoming race. We also had a great view of Canada across the bright blue waters of Lake Huron. Today we all had a blast at Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio. There were a dozen major roller coasters, all with amazing views of Lake Erie. The group favorite was Dragster, a 22 second ride that's the second tallest (420 ft) and third fastest (120 mph) roller coaster in the world. It was a long day of walking, but well worth it! ... read more

Day 1 Departure time- 3:42 pm It was a long stressful morning; running around and making any final preparations. Packing the RV was a pain in the butt, and the heat certainly didn't help. Once everyone was ready to go we went for one last swim in the pool, then headed out to the driveway for a family picture in front of the RV we'll be spending the next month in. After that we all climbed in, and our trip had officially begun. ... read more

The days until we leave are down to the single digits, and we can't wait to start this very exciting journey! Everyone's making lists, packing, and doing any final research on all of the place we'll be visiting. It's hard to believe we've been planning this trip for over a year, and now it's actually here. It seems like just yesterday we drew a map of the US and started jotting down the places we wanted to go...all on a used restaurant napkin.... read more
