Thursday, May 28, 2009 was Dragon Boat Festival, or Duan Wu Jie, one of thre three biggest holidays celebrated in China. It falls on the 5th day of the 5th month on the lunar calendar and is therefore also sometimes called the Double Fifth Festival. This festival is actually celebrated to mourn for a man who died more than 2000 years ago (278BC)! He was Qu Yuan, a poet, writer, a patriotic officer who challenged corruption, and was very popular with the common people. When the Dynasty he served was defeated, he committed suicide by drowning himself in the river. Supposedly, the people hurried out on the river in their boats, beating drums to scare away the fish and feeding Zong zi to those that wouldn't be scared away so that they wouldn't eat Qu Yuan's ... read more

Today Leah and I went to a local park called Guhua Park (pronounced Goo-ha). A wonderful lady named Sammy, who works at Ace, accompanied us and gave us a tour. I did not try to keep straight the names of the different buildings and bridges, just enjoyed it. So, here are some pictures for you to enjoy also. Many people were talking to Sammy and I had no clue what about until finally after awhile she said "Leah, I think I should have made a sign to hang around your neck that says " I am 9 years old and am from the United States!" ... read more

We decided to spend the day in town Sunday. We took a taxi into Nanqiao, which cost 14 RMB, which is a little over $2 USD. We left about 9:15 and got dropped off at the Sentosa Hotel where we had their breakfast buffet. After breakfast, we walked to a little park not too far away. We've seen various things going on there as we've driven past, but there wasn't anything going on when we were there. We did get to take some pictures with the 2010 Expo Mascot. He is supposed to represent a Chinese character and he's all over because the 2010 World Expo is going to be in Shanghai. Leah and I are going to learn a little more about him and we'll share what we learn later. On Jim's previous trips, he ... read more

At first glance, the large grocery stores look much like those in the USA, but, upon closer inspection - there are definitely differences! Leah has enjoyed taking pictures while we're shopping, so I'm just going to post some. We definitely attract attention when we are shopping, especially Leah. Picture a guy walking through the mall with 6 inch spiked green hair and a multitude of piercings and tattoos - you know the kind of attention he attracts? Well, that's about the amount we get just walking through the store! Only it's surprise and curiosity, and the women often tell Leah how beautiful she is. Just like at home, you usually encounter the produce department first, I've been able to find enough things I'm used to using that I haven't tried much different yet, except some bright ... read more

On 5-16, after our tour of the Humble Administrator's Garden, we had lunch and then toured a silk factory. We had lunch at the Happy Hotel. It wasn't as high class as the other Chinese Restaurants we've been to, but it was good. I showed the guide my gluten free paper and he did a great job taking over and figuring out what Leah and I could eat. They only had chopsticks - and one of the things we ordered was rice noodles. We're all doing good picking up chunks of meat and veggies with chopsticks (especially Leah), but eating slippery noodles is a whole different story! We made quite a mess trying to serve ourselves, and eventually the others, including the driver, took turns serving us. After lunch, we went to the No.1 Silk Factory. ... read more

On Saturday, 5-16, we took a tour of the Humble Administrator's Garden in Suzhou, one of the top four gardens in China. The azaleas were finished blooming, and the Lotus hadn't started yet, but it was still very beautiful! We had a guide named Danny who was fantastic. He spoke very good English and made everything very entertaining, not just dry facts. The Gardens are 500 years old and cover almost 13 acres. The four main elements of an ancient Chinese garden are the water, rocks, plants and buildings, and this garden had plenty of them all! He started the tour by explaining that Chinese painters were the ones who designed the ancient gardens, so he said to pretend we were walking through a 3-D painting! What a neat idea!... read more

On Friday, 5-15, we were driven to Suzhou in about 1 1/2 hours. Suzhou is a much bigger city than Nanqiao, and is more modern but also has many more traditional Chinese sights. We went through some countryside on the way, there were many farms and greenhouses along the side of the freeway. This entry will be about Friday. We went first to Tyco China where Jim used to spent much time. It had been arranged for Leah and I to spend the morning with Amy, who is from Winston-Salem, her husband is working at Tyco China for 2 yrs. The Tyco driver took us to pick her up and then we went shopping at the old part of walking street. There is a temple called The Yuan Miao Temple which was built in 276AD and ... read more

We are living in an apartment building within the guarded gates of the company Jim is working for. Looking out the front of the apartment, we see the business building. We can look to the right and see Jim's office windows. To the left is a river behind the fence, and between the fence and river are gardens. They may grow some of the food that they serve the workers in the cafeteria. Between the apartments and the business is a soccer field, a basketball court and some gardens. Nearer to the business is the "parking garage" for all of the bikes and scooters. Nobody living in the apartments owns a car. Outside the back of the apartment is a grassy area and then some other businesses. Tuesday morning, Leah was going outside and came back ... read more

Monday, May 11th was the day for Jim to start his position here in China. Leah and I were invited to join him in the morning, we thought just for a tour - WRONG! Horton took us to Jim's office first. Jim is excited to have an office of his own, and it's big! I thought our "tour" would be fairly quick, so I hadn't brought my purse or anything, so while Jim talked to people, etc, Leah and I played tic-tac-toe, hangman, drawing games, a couple computer games, etc to keep ourselves occupied. There was a welcome meeting planned - the fact that Leah and I were part of it was quite a surprise to me! We entered a door and were standing at the front of a room filled with 30-35 people who all ... read more

For our first full day in China, we were celebrating Mother's Day and our 29th Anniversary. Horton had said the night before that he would like to take us to the Sentosa Hotel for their breakfast buffet. This is the hotel where Jim used to stay when he was working for Tyco. Although it had been almost a year since he was last there, one of the waiters recognized him. We enjoyed breakfast, which had traditional Chinese items as well as some American things, including an omelet bar. Leah and I tried Congee, which I would describe as a watery rice porridge. I had read about it as a common breakfast for many Chinese and was able to teach Horton the American name for it! After breakfast, we went shopping at a store called Lotus, probably ... read more
