Pondi, Ma Chère A weekend trip to the artistic 'white town' in south india, was long called for! Stayed up at the quaint, relaxing room at the top floor of the L'Orient - a 19th century Heritage hotel (French architecture); Walked around beautiful European styled lanes; Giant quiches at Rendezvous (highly overrated eatery); French food at Satsang (amazing salad dressing!); Shopped at Kalki (awesome bags, accessories, scarfs etc) & Fab India; Happy hours at Le Space; Coffee at coffee.com (great coffee, rude staff!), visited the beautiful Church of our Lady of Immaculate Conception; walked to beautiful Matrimandir at Auroville. Of course the weathers not so great (Although it was october: the heat & humidity killed the enthusiasm to walk around too much) & service too laid back most eateries ... read more

The 19th Century Coffee Estate designed by a Swiss architect, was taken over 2 years back by Neemrana chain of "Non-Hotel Hotels". This quiet little place with its old school charm had all those little things we fell in love with , be it the large exhaustive repertory of books in the upstairs living room, the swords, stuffed animals hung around, no tv in rooms etc. We lazed around doing nothing more that reading our books in the verandah, having coffee every few hours, walking around in the coffee plantations and of course eating (like pigs) delightful treats prepared by the staff. Apart from being incredibly warm and meticulous, the staff had interesting tit bits to tell us abt a bollywood movie "Saath Khoon Maaf" being shot here for 5 months ... & of course we ... read more

The place is MEANT TO breathe the fresh (air-conditioned) air of ……….shopping malls! I dislike shopping malls in India. Cuz shopping malls in India= painful parking tickets + painfully noisy over sized families walking around + painfully slow cashiers + painfully over artificial sales staff + NO VARIETY. I feel sheer agony just thinking of the no of times I’ve walked out empty handed as I couldn’t get items in my size/ color / type. Sheer waste of time, walking around aimlessly paying monies for the disorganised parking lots. So much of pain for NOTHING. ZILCH. ZERO. But the malls at KL are sheer joy! (So heres describing my shallow, materialistic side). Be it the streets of Bukit Bintang, Sungei Wang, Low Yat Plaza, BB Plaza, Suria KLConvention Center, the Mid-Valley mega mall, or simply ... read more

Heading to london : Began with reading (in the flight) about the heated debate on reducing the maximum limit of 24 week within which abortions are legal. This is pretty strange… why would women want to abort their 6 month old baby ! even more astonishing were the surveys that were conducted in this regard which indicated over 2 lac abortions p a in UK …. Out of which most women had had over 4 abortions… some upto a staggering 8 times. crazy ! Plus there was a write up on woody allen’s new movie Vicky cristina Barcelona which was being show cased at cannes (damn! Why didn’t I plan cannes) - looks like a pretty good movie- marked into my wish list Touristy stuff: Seeing the sights !!! The 1st 2 days we bored ... read more

When it comes to ’taking a break’, spontaneity is the key word. The more spontaneous u are, the more exciting will the trip be!!! And considering I wanted to be away for 2-3 weeks to another continent which required these horribly irritating things called ’visas’ which required showing a confirmed itinerary, the spontaneity went for a toss ! Not only was submitting duniya bhar ka documents to prove to the firangs that YEP, I wont go broke in your expensive country was a pain, but waiting for the interview literally felt like kneeling on the ground & begging for entry !!! So after all that jazz.. When I finally landed in a fully automated land of fool proof systems, good connectivity & lush green - I realized that u require almos... read more

(Ok it wasn’t so big and it wasn’t so fat a holiday- but it was a brief two day out of the ordinary one !) Flight to Athens ~ Well let me start about telling you about Amsterdam. Why ? cuz I wanna boast of course. So what if I didn’t go to Amsterdam- I did go to the Amsterdam airport! The view from the plane was amusing…. Patches of green land - all in squares and rectangles - separated by water canals / streams ! seemingly under sea level- so they call it the Venice of the north - and now I can vouch for it ;) Old Athens ~ So I changed flights there, and headed to one of the oldest civilisations of Europe. Or perhaps THE oldest civilisations of Europe. We were ... read more

Travel Date: May 2009 I had made up my mind to travel to Europe a year before the trip. But at that time neither did I have any monies nor did I have any leaves (new job). So my target was to go by mid-2008 which I did. But what I didn’t realise was the great ordeal I will have to face in picking and choosing which places to go! You got only this many days and this much budget whereas Europe is an endless ocean with sooooo many things that you DON’T wanna skip ! So after SEVERAL permutations & combinations- decided on doing some major cities. I think my trip was lovely. But if I could have a crystal ball to take a peep at & had a choice to do it all over ... read more

Travel date: May 2008 The land indescribable in words and photographs - literally. You can get a feel of Venice only once you’re IN Venice !!! we got off the lazy airport waited for the bus which was an astonishing 15 mins late (the only time something was ever late in Europe). Dumped bags & headed off to the streets of Venice…. grabbed the 1st pizza we could lay our hands on (YUMM- who says authentic italian pizzas are bland???!!!) Most lanes leading to st mark’s square had lovely small souvenir shops selling magnets & masks. We hogged on ice creams, ice creams and more ice creams ! Italians are gruff!! Although im sure they don’t mean to be, but they did bring out the worst of apprehension from us. Then of course, the many hundred ... read more
