Well last night was epic. Every year for some reason I think New Years Eve is the night. Putting such pressure usually makes it end in disappointment so I made sure this time around to kind of just let it happen. Prior to arriving in Singapore I had met many Singaporeans randomly in parts of Malaysia. I asked them all "What goes down in Singy for New Years?" Most people either said one of the many club parties, at $40 a head, or "if you don't know anybody, it won't be that great." Really reassuring I tell you. Some also mentioned a huge party on one of the islands sponsored by MTV. I'm not usually the one for organized things like this because they are usually way over priced and never as good as advertised. I ... read more

Goodbye Bangkok, once again. I was suppose to head off to Koh Tao yesterday, but when I woke up in the morning to buy my ticket, they were all sold out so I had to wait one more day. I took the overnight bus/boat combination and arrived on the island at 10am in the morning. By this point I had not seen any of the south yet and thought I should take a look before I commit myself to Koh Chang for living and completing my Dive Master's certification. I have heard great things about it. When I first got off the boat, I was picked up by a scuba diving company to take me to their shop and bungalows, free of charge. How thoughtful of them. I know they were not expecting anything in return ... read more

I just had to do it. It's back on the road again up to Chiang Mai. The first time around, i spent 3 weeks here. That is second non-only to Bangkok in places that I have spent the most amount of time in. Well, there were a few reasons why I decided to return. I think the best time to be in a place is when there is a festival going on. The first time I experienced this to the max was when I was in La Paz, Bolivia back in the summer (winter there) of 2003. It was a day dedicated to students and there were massive parades, music, costumes, and loads upon loads of street food and beer. I also think I enjoyed it because I was one of the only ones who didn't ... read more

Sihinoukville was a nice place, a nice place indeed. It was I think the best overall experience in Cambodia looking back, and it was a hard one to leave as well. I don't know what it is though about Thailand, but I get so excited when I am going to be heading back in that direction. This time I applied for a tourist visa. This way I could stay in the country for 2 months with the possibility of a one month extension without the hassle of those pesky visa runs that are all too common with those expats who have made Thailand their home, (il)legally?!?! I did not know what I was going to do this time around and did not want to have to worry about crossing the boarder right in the middle of ... read more

Well childern...we left off from our last adventure in a little place we call Nong Khiaw. Northern Lao has been a pretty chilled out time the past two weeks that I have been here. I have kept a low profile, mainly because there is no real night life, there aren't many tourist, intermittent power, and I am still recovering from the intensity experienced in Thailand. However with two weeks of R&R now in the reserves, it time to go out and spend that hard earned sleep. I'm going to Vang Vieng baby! Vang Vieng is both a treasure and a person's own worst nightmare, although I don't understand the latter. People either stop here and enjoy or move straight on with a look of disgust. Mainly this comes from those self-righteous, vegan, i hate mass commercialism ... read more

August 10th 2006

After 4 days I left Luang Prabang and took a bus to Phonsavan. Its a good 8 hours to the east and is the site of "The Plain of Jars." I have heard good and bad things about this attraction but since I have over three weeks still in the country and was going to do a whole tour of the north it seemed like a fitting stopover. As usual on the bus I met some fellow travellers and we stuck together on our Phonsavan adventure. Many guesthouses will have a van or hire a tuk-tuk to pick up passengers when they get off the bus. Since having people stay at their establisment is a good portion of their livelyhood, their days activities seem to funcion around when buses get in from different cities. The one ... read more

I was forced to leave Thailand due to those stupid 30 day visas. However it was getting a little too comfortable and I had at this point only seen just a small piece of what I set off to do. It was off to Laos next. I headed up to the north of the country where there is a boarder crossing at Chiang Kong. From here I would catch a two day slowboat to Luang Prabang in northern Laos. In Chiang Kong I had met three other people, 2 British girls and a German guy who were planning on doing the same trip so we stuck together. I really had no idea of what to expect from the slowboat, just something that everybody making this leg seems to do. Its a bit frustrating sometimes here because ... read more

Man did I luck out pretty good. Last Saturday I went to a club called "Spicy," actually its a pretty shitty place but everybody seems to go there from 2AM onwards. Apparently there is another popular club called Bubbles, but it had a fire and was under repair the time that I was in town (2.5 weeks, the longest time in one place on this trip so far). Anyway Spicy has your typical East meets West clientele. As I made my rounds I saw exactly what I was looking for. This doesn't happen all to frequently with me. I would consider myself very picky, but when the felling hits, its action time. Her name was Yo, a beautiful 5', 90lb. Thai butterfly, and we danced... When it was time to leave, I asked her if she ... read more

So treking trips from Chiang Mai are a popular thing. Every shop, guesthouse, tour agency, or noodle hut will offer them to you, and they are all quoted as "non-touristy," go figure? "So what makes your trip different than the guy next door?", "Well...ours is non-toursity." It wasn't that bad. There are may areas to go to and we only saw 2 other groups with ours that followed in the same path, even though almost everybody starts off and ends the adventure at the same spot. The trip consisted of 3 days, 2 nights hiking through the jungle, a night stay at a hilltop village, an afternoon dip at a waterfall, elephant riding, white water rafting and floating down on bamboo rafts. It was a value let me tell you. All for roughly $35 including all ... read more

So last night I took the overnight train to Thailands second largest city. I was trying my luck for a sleeper car, but unfortunatley I did not book ahead as recommended. I was lucky to get one of the last 6 seats on the train though so I can't complain. The ride wasn't bad, I just wish I could have dropped $2 more and been able to lie down. I would have taken the top bunk so I would have been just a little father away from the spiders with the 4 inch legspan crawling on the floor. I arrived at 5:30AM and now I had to get to a guest house. I always do this. How come the most convenient method of transportation always gets you to your destination either extremely early in the morning ... read more
