Sydney or Venice?
Sydney or Venice?
Catching the ferry on the Canale di San Marco reminded me very much of Sydney and its harbour
Day three (Wednesday ) in Venice was a frustrating one. I spent a fair part of my day trying to organise the Italy to Croatia leg of my journey. I managed to get a ticket on a train to Ancona, the port that services Split in Croatia but had a frustrating time trying to book a berth on the ferry. I have been busy with sms messages and emails between here and Australia as my mate Bob Vere has been acting as my travel agent for this part of the trip (and was most helpful during the Spanish leg as well). Dawn in Piazza San Marco
Dawn in Piazza San Marco
No one here but some early morning pigeons. The Piazza San Marco packs in tourists - but not at 7am!
After a very quick flight from London Standsted (1 hour and 40 minutes) we arrived at the Airport in Treviso which is about 16kms from the centre of Venice. Buses chartered by RyanAir take passengers onto the station in Venice where you can catch a train, bus or ferry to wherever it is you are going. Waiting at the wharf for the next ferry I briefly felt like I was back in Sydney. I guess it was the peak hour vibe with its mix of local workers all desperate to get home after a tough day mixing with an increasing tide [View Full Entry]

A Breakfast of Champions
A Breakfast of Champions
Nothing beats broken eggs, jamon and potatoes for breakfast!
Well folks it’s my last full day in Spain and I must admit I’m a little sad to be leaving so soon. I have loved my tour of Andalucia and the cities of Seville, Granada and Cordoba, each one offering something different and something very unique. The people on the whole are very friendly, particularly to tourists who attempt to speak the language. Anyway before I get all teary-eyed I just thought I’d check-in a write about today’s proceedings. Its very handy having the internet café literally in my doorstep and as this is probably my last chance to write until [View Full Entry]

Welcome to Cordoba Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Córdoba
Jaen Province
Jaen Province
For three hours between Granada and Cordoba it was nothing but olive groves, and not just close to the road either. Every hill and every valley was covered in olive trees.
I left Granada bright and early this morning so that I could get to Cordoba as early as possible as I only have two nights here and then I jump on a plane back to London on Sunday morning (25th). Granada was a great experience, mainly due to the lure of the Alhambra however it is nice to arrive here in Cordoba, a much smaller town that moves at an even slower pace than Seville or Granada. The three hour bus trip snaked its way through the hills of Andalucia and Jaen province which is the richest olive oil producing region [View Full Entry]

Granada Day Three Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Granada
Cathedral and Capilla Real
Cathedral and Capilla Real
Granada´s Cathedral, not as grand as Seville´s and more difficult to find the way in!
Thursday 22nd September Day three in Granada has been at a much slower pace than my first hectic two days here. Having been unsuccessful in my attempt to find a laundry to get my clothes washed I made the choice to go and buy a few things to get me through until I leave Spain on Sunday. It was a late start to my morning (woked up at 8.30am) compared to my previous ones in Spain, I think I am getting used to the different pace here and after grabbing a quick shower in the hotel I again wandered through the [View Full Entry]

A place to rest

A Desert Highway
A Desert Highway
The road from Seville to Granada on the most part is very barren which gives you plenty of reason to close the curtains on the bus and sleep all the way to Granada
Woke up early on Tuesday morning and headed off to have desayuno at Bar Europa (same place as i had dinner last night). Despite being told they opened at 8am the kitchen wasn´t and so I was greeted with "lo siento" when i asked for eggs. The waiter could tell from my expression that I was a little disapppointed and so they decided that they would open it for me, which was a very nice gesture. I rushed back to my hotel to check-out so that i could make the 11am bus to Granada. All things went well, I thanked the [View Full Entry]

Christopher Columbus´ tomb?
Christopher Columbus´ tomb?
Over the years people have disputed the birth and resting places of Christopher Columbus. This monument inside the Catedral may or may not be his tomb...
Yesterday (Monday) was another warm one here in Sevilla, the temperature reached as high as 37 degrees and I´ve taken on the same pinkish glow of the city´s buildings courtesy of a trip on the Sevilla Tour, an open deck bus tour that takes you to the most dull areas of Seville. Claims of this tour being airconditioned are farcical and if you ever visit Sevilla, don´t waste your money on catching this bus, no matter how charming the bus tour staff seem. The most interesting parts of Seville are in the old town where there is very little traffic and [View Full Entry]

The City of Seville
Amazing views from the Giralda, Seville´s most popular landmark.
I am now relaxing in the wonderful Andalucian city of Seville. Famous for oranges and I guess the heat as its been above 30 degrees for my first two days here. Regrettably I am only here for three days before heading off to Granada, I would have loved to stay much longer as you would really need to spend a week or two here to see everything that this place has to offer. This city has an irresistable charm, with its maze of streets, some not much wider than shoulder width, its fantastic night life and for the most part its [View Full Entry]

The always busy Bar Italia, quite simply the first and only choice for coffee in Soho (and to learn about Rocky Marciano)
Friday 16th September Thursday was a frustrating day both weather-wise and for forward planning of my holiday. Everything has gone very smoothly up until yesterday. The weather has been glorious and I've been able to find flights and accommodation very easily. Unfortunately yesterday I hit a brick wall, namely Ryan Air and it was wet and windy in London, not the type of conditions conducive for sight seeing. For those who aren't aware, Ryanair are one of the most popular discount airlines in Europe and they are fantastic if you do not have to deal with them on the phone. All [View Full Entry]
