My colleague and I drove our big SUV to the dump on the outskirts of Phnom Penh. We tried to get close to the main dump, but with all the rain, the dirt roads were more like mudpits so we carefully navigated our way until we saw some kids on the edge of the garbage heap. It was devastating to see all the kids who work there. At first, the smell of rotting garbage did not seem so bad, but after about 5 minutes, I wanted to wretch because the stench from the dump was so putrid and pervasive, it [View Full Entry]

view from my room at the Beach House
Had the loveliest weekend in Kep. Drove down Friday night, first time to drive outside Phnom Penh after sunset, in downpouring rain, kinda scary. It was a miracle we didn't hit any stray animals. Woke up at The Beach House to the tranquil sounds of waves crashing along the shore and to a brilliant sunrise. Had the most delicious pancakes in Cambodia in the shape of stars with real maple syrup and tropical fruit. Was driven in a tuk-tuk to Kampot passing picturesque and verdant rice paddy fields and hills. Took a day tour to Bokor. I was a bit [View Full Entry]

These are my thoughts on combating human trafficking after being in Cambodia for 3 months learning about the issue: I think most of us readily acknowledge that pedophilia is wrong or at least illegal. But how many of us feel that pornography or prostitution is bad for the people who participate in it and bad for society? Where do we draw the line between good and bad? For example, globalization and modernization has made pornography accessible to children living in huts in remote villages of Cambodia, who watch it on portable DVD players rented for less than 15 cents a night [View Full Entry]

We were almost trampled by elephants on the way up!
Climb them while you can! There's plenty of steps to keep you in shape in the Angkor Archaelogical Park. Let me tell you from experience, touring the temples in the heat is not for the sweat shy, but it is exhilarating and rewarding to reach the top of stupas to enjoy the views and the grandeur of the temple ruins. It's even nicer to tour with Mr. Davong, aka Tuk Tuk Man, who always had ice cold drinks waiting for me and my family and occasional treats of tropical fruit. His English is limited, but you won't find a more [View Full Entry]
