Hi John! Yeah, Kyle is indeed a pretty kushy dude. And he certainly appreciated the use of "kushy" as an adjective as well. Would be nice to take a trek when I get back. Cheers!

Am particularly jealous of this portion of your trip...would love to go on a trek like that. Kyle looks like a very kushy fellow (http://www.flickr.com/photos/8870546@N03/5692704302/in/set-72157626658904216).

Hi A$! Yeah, I remember your Mom's cooking - it's awesome. Let's plan on an NC trip when I get back.

Ha! Yeah, I know what you mean, Arvind. Restraint is probably the best policy. Out the window or into a bottle might be a close second.

Cool Arvind! Look forward to hearing what he thinks about it.

Restraint
HI, Brian. In the past I've often referred to India as the land of 1001 smells (stinks - depending on your perspective). I remember a repeated and outright olfactory assault through out my visits. RE: long bus rides, in 1981, I was on a 12 hr bus ride and stopped at an open pit rest area. To say I was shocked from such a site was an understatement. From then on, I vowed to NEVER AGAIN deboard at a rest area. Even if it meant suffering prolonged thirst on hot grimy bus rides... Restraint.

HI, Brian. Good stuff. Our dad has been to Vipassana, twice I think, at the Georgia center.

Baby steps
I can't even begin to tackle this epic list of questions, so let's just start with one. Dosa. Hands down. Look forward to hearing those mad tabla skillz when you get back!

thanks for the recommendation, Shankar
Been as far south as Karnataka but have heard great things about Kerala too - it's definitely on the list.

Kerala
Hi Nice blog. Next time when you are here, do visit Kerala. It is the most beautiful state in Inda and can be regarded as the cultural capital of southern india. regards Shankar.

Hey Chavo, just wanted to send you some love from 1/2 way round the world. Enjoying your posts... sometimes educational and funny, always thought-provoking and entertaining. Stay safe and keep your shoes sh*t-free, especially if you're now wearing flip-flops. Cheers!

Cool, thanks Catherine! Always happy to learn more about all things olfactory. Re. 8, not a specific one. I'll have to check out "The Beguiled" when I get back. The Man with No Name and Dirty Harry are pretty good characterizations of people in the 60s and 70s, respectively. This comment was inspired by a New Yorker Article on Clint Eastwood - worth a look: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2010/03/08/100308fa_fact_denby Re. 15, he was just lying on his bed (and fortunately not doing anything else!) Re. 33, thanks for the recommendation - will look into that!

Follow up questions...
I read once that the olfactory system is right next to the place in your brain where memories are stored, thus sense memories associated with smell may be most evocative and easy to conjure up again. Regarding: 8: Are you thinking of any characters in particular? Because I'd like your take on his character in The Beguilded if so. A paranoid reaction to women's lib? 15: Specify what the rotund German was doing at the time of walk-in. 33: Seems likely. But I bet a little Gogol Bordello would really help set the scene, too. Take care out there! Catherine
